Introducing the Psalms (Pss. 1-2)
Introducing the Psalms (Pss. 1-2)
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
Illustration: The first two chapters of the Psalms work like the beginning of a movie. In the opening scenes of a film, the main characters and plot line is established. In a similar manner, the opening chapter of the Psalms give the themes of the book.
There are 25 beatitudes in the Psalms. Two of them are in the opening chapters:
In , the author reminds us that a person who refuses to walk with sinful people, stand with people doing sinful things, or sit with people who mock what is good is blessed.
a. Wicked- lawless people who make up their own rules.
b. Sinners- people who constantly disobey God.
c. Scoffers- negative people who constantly make fun of righteous things.
In , David instructs us about the security and blessing of taking refuge in the Lord.
These are major themes in the Psalms. Throughout these chapters, you see the blessing of doing what is right and the peril of the wicked. These are great works of poetry but they are so much more. These are intended to instruct us how to live as noticed in these two Psalms.
Summary of Each Chapter
In , the focus is on doing what is right as an individual. Keep sinful influences out of your life and meditate on God's word. The "blessing" is being nurtured by God to bear fruit for him.
In , the focus is on doing what is right as a nation. God's ability and wisdom is far above earthly rulers. In , following Peter and John's release they quote to demonstrate the righteousness and power of God. Evil people try to thwart his plans but he is more powerful than they.

Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Blessed is the man who makes
the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
to those who go astray after a lie!
Blessed is the one who considers the poor!
In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him;
