Mark 1:21–28 CSB
21 They went into Capernaum, and right away he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach. 22 They were astonished at his teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes. 23 Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out, 24 “What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 25 Jesus rebuked him saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him. 27 They were all amazed, and so they began to ask each other: “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 At once the news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.

Jesus teaching showed his authority.

(CSB) 21 They went into Capernaum, and right away he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach. 22 They were astonished at his teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.
DRIVING OUT AN UNCLEAN SPIRIT
21 They went into Capernaum, and right away he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach. 22 They were astonished at his teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.

Human teachers do their best to show God’s intended meaning for a text.

22 They were astonished at his teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.
Illus: When I get up to share with your what scripture says, I am limited by several factors. Here is the truth, scripture is timeless truth written to people 2000-4000 years ago.
so when I’m teaching on moses, I can read books on ancient Egypt, learn about the customs of that time, but I do not understand things like someone living in the near east of that day.
I can read Ephesians, but the letter was actually written to those living in emphasis.
My greatest limitation is that I constantly pursue the author’s, God’s, intent bud deep down, I will not know the riches of scripture fully till I enter eternity with God.

16 All Scripture is inspired by God, and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
4:1 I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and because of his appearing and his kingdom: 2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching.
4 I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and because of his appearing and his kingdom: 2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching.

Jesus taught what he intended when he wrote the bible.

22 They were astonished at his teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.
Illus: Where I come to the text limited by my humanness Jesus was not.
When Jesus taught, he knew what the authors intent in scripture was because he was the author.
When Jesus taught about Abraham, he existed and saw Abraham. Jesus understood sin because he saw eve first sin in the garden of eden.
Don’t miss what mark is attempting to show you here. He is highlighting how Jesus is not just a teacher. He is more than a scribe who studied.
He taught with authority because he was the authority.
Illus: (CSB) 39 You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me. 40 But you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life. II.

The demons proclaimed Jesus authority.

23 Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out, 24 “What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
25 Jesus rebuked him saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.

There was no question to who Jesus was when the demons saw him.

23 Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out, 24 “What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
Illus: Lets look at a few things here.
1. Mark highlights that there is an actual spiritual world. Demons do exist.
2. The demons actualy recognize Jesus. Their reaction shows that God is going to bring judgment on this earth.
3. The demons specifically call Jesus “the holy one of God.
4. They understand his authority.
Friends, Mark has included this account for your faith. It points us to understand who Jesus is. That is is God himself… but don’t miss that believing in the existence of Jesus and genuine faith in Christ are two very different things.
Illus: (CSB) 19 You believe that God is one. Good! Even the demons believe—and they shudder.

Jesus came to free people from the power of sin and darkness.

25 Jesus rebuked him saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.
Illus: Jesus showed that he had far more power than just a teacher. He commanded the demons… and they did what he said.
Jesus genuinely wants to set us free, not only eternally from our sins, but also today. He alone has the power to accomplish this. He alone has the authority.
What in your life do you need to give to Jesus? What do you need to be freed from?
Illus: (CSB) 34 Jesus responded, “Truly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.
(CSB) 34 Jesus responded, “Truly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.

God does not want you to have any doubts about who Jesus is.

(CSB) 27 They were all amazed, and so they began to ask each other: “What is this? A new teaching with authority!, He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 At once the news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.

When we see God’s miracles in scripture, we understand Jesus did them so we would know him.

Illus: Jesus does an odd thing in the following passage… he tells the demons not not acknoldge him. Why? Why when Jesus did miracles did he tell people not to share who he was.
HEre is the simple answer… jesus did not come to heal people. he healed people, but that we not his purpose. Jesus did not come to cast out demons. He did cast out demons but that wasn’t his purpose.
Jesus cam to save men from their sin by fulfilling the law with his life, suffering and dying in our place and rising from the dead.
All the miracles were to be apart of this plan. Jesus did not want to get distracted from his main purpose.

Mark 1:29–34 CSB
29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went into Simon and Andrew’s house with James and John. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31 So he went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve them. 32 When evening came, after the sun had set, they brought to him all those who were sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town was assembled at the door, 34 and he healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
