The Word was In the beginning and before the beginning.
John 1:2 ESV
He was in the beginning with God.
For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.
John is introducing Jesus with a word or a term that both his Jewish and Gentile readers would have been familiar with.
Promise: a declaration that something will or will not be done, given by one.

The Word was In the beginning and before the beginning.
• It’s hard to trust in a promise, when a promise has been broken before -
So, for his Jewish readers, by introducing Jesus as the “Word,” John is in a sense pointing them back to the Old Testament where the Logos or “Word” of God is associated with the personification of God’s revelation.
• I promise, I’ll be there to watch you play in the big game! But never show up.
• I promise, I’ll pay you back the money I owe you! But they never pay back.
In Greek philosophy, the term Logos was used to describe the intermediate agency by which God created material things and communicated with them. In the Greek worldview, the Logos was thought of as a bridge between the transcendent God and the material universe. Therefore, for his Greek readers the use of the term Logos would have likely brought forth the idea of a mediating principle between God and the world.
• I promise, I’ll never lie to you again! But even the promise was another lie.

The Word
• I promise, I’ll leave the streets alone and change my life! But you know thats not true.
• Baby I promise, if you’ll give me one more chance! But you know that he told you that before.
In the beginning (verse 1) - the beginning refers not to the point of Creation but to the eternality of the Word.
the beginning refers not to the point of Creation but to the eternality of the Word.
Was with God (Verse 1)
2. Was with God (Verse 1)
• God if you get me out of this, I promise I won’t do it again!
3. Was God (Verse 1)
• We believe people based on their promises.
He was in the beginning with God (Verse 2) - The Word changes to He
4. He was in the beginning with God (Verse 2) - The Word changes to He
Write Down “The Power Of Recognition”
• When a person makes a promises, My generations says… “Put that on something.” - “Man I swear to God” “On my momma”
John 1:3 ESV
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
• We put faith in a persons word, that they will come through.

The Bible is so full of God’s promises, that it is not really possible to count them. Some people have tried and come up with about 3000. Others have counted 7000. Herbert Lockyer wrote a book called All the promises of the Bible and claims to list 8000.
All things were made through him!
First promise of the Bible: , "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."
Without him was not any thing made that was made!
Write down “No mistakes!”
• Very Important to note - The Bible has general promises and the Bible has specific promises to certain people.
John 1:4–5 ESV
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
God makes two types of promises: Unconditional Promises – This is a promise that is made without attaching any conditions whatsoever.

Conditional Promises – This type of promise is subject to certain qualifications or requirements.
In Him (The Word) - Was Life
• The Text
The Life (The Word) was the light of men.
Two unchangeable things
The Light (The word) shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
1. God’s promise - His promise is his word
John 1:14 ESV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
The Word becomes flesh -
Colossians 1:15–17 ESV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
He is the image of the invisible God.
All things created by him!
In heaven and on earth!
Visible and Invisible!
Thrones or dominions!
Rulers or Authorities!
In him all things hold together!
- What is your image of Christ?
- A distorted view of Christ will causes Distorted Faith!
- Christ is not a Resource. He is the source
- He is not a Supplement - Adding something to something..
Hold Together: hold together in proper place or arrangement
ESV

hold together in proper place or arrangement

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
2. His Oath
Instead of leaving us in our doubt, God’s mercy and love leads Him not only to promise blessing to Abraham, but also to swear it.
- In this text, I not concerned about the promise but I have great info about the promise maker…
God has made promises through his word…
ESV
The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
ESV
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
ESV
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
ESV
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
ESV
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
It’s getting ready to happen!!!
