ROMANS.
God is ____.
LOVE. Its the one all-encompassing way we can think of God.
It is the primary attribute of God.
Exodus 34:5–6 ESV
The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,
Exodus 34
1 John 4:8 ESV
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
Love of God makes a thematic appearance in and 13 as Paul defines a transformed life.
Why transformed?
Why love?
1 John 4:10 ESV
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
God’s Choice.
[context - Exodus]
he remembered them, heard their cries, delivered them.
Moses goes up Sinai // people fall away // God is angry. His anger burned against them. // Moses intercedes on behalf of the people.
Exodus 34:5–6 ESV
The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,
Get a kick out of Jonah’s reference to those same attributes:
Jonah 4:1–3 ESV
But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. And he prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
God abounds in steadfast love. Why is it steadfast?
By choice. The is no condition under which we have any sort of claim on the mighty riches of God. It is by God’s sovereign choice that he loves us.
Jonah 4:1-2
Romans 5:8 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
God’s love is an elective love. He chooses to love.
That’s agape love. Outward facing, Choose-to love. Vs Eros: self-fulfillment.
God abounds in love and expresses his love for us by freely choosing us, and he confirms it by redeeming us in the person of Jesus Christ, our King.
In
Romans 13:8 ESV
Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
Paul gives a command. [up on screen]
Context of this command:
Remember what we are:
Romans 12:4–5 ESV
For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
1 Peter 2:5 ESV
you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:10 ESV
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Romans 12
additional context:
Well-Salted (12:9-20)
Romans 12:9 ESV
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.
Well-behaved (13:1-7)
Romans 9
Romans 13:8 ESV
Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
Medeis. Owe nothing.
(shall we continue in sin so grace may abound?)
Me genoitio.
EXCEPT TO LOVE.
Debts of love.
Agape love. Love your neighbor.
Church planning?
He’s loved us.
He’s died for us. Reconciled us to himself. Peace.
He’s commissioned us.
He’s gifted us.
He’s calling for us to work.
Jeremiah 32:41 ESV
I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and all my soul.
Jeremiah 32:
We’re here to be fruitful.
Love God. Love one another. Love our neighbor.
