This morning we are going to talk about rebuilding…broken places.
.… We love creative process of imagining, designing and then building things….
We build toys, houses, roads, furniture—we even build nations.
We build our bodies and we all try to build relationships and friendships.....
Buildings comes from the what we can be envision.
We see this in some of the architectural marvels around the world...
it is amazing what the imagination is able to do… for example… look at some of these architectural marvels..

In the Old Testament, God was the master builder. The word “to build” in Hebrew is banah and it refers to the construction, new or renewed, of just about anything. Its most significant use is the Lord’s “building” of His nation and people—they are the work of His hands.
People are amazing...Just think about it that each one of these building began with a thought… then through series of actions became a reality…
The book of Hebrews we are told t that it is by faith that we understand that the ages were framed by the Word of God and that what is seen was not made out of visible things.. that God is the architect and the master builder...
in. The book of Hebrews we are told that
We see this same creativity is the Master builder— In creation.. The writer to the Hebrews reminds us that it is by faith that we understand that the ages were framed by the Word of God and that what is seen was not made out of visible things.. what started off in the mind of God came the reality of creation…

David said that unless the Lord builds the house they laborer labor in vain.

Anything we construct with our hands whether a nation, a church, a marriage, a family…
God is the architect and the master builder...
The word “to build” in Hebrew is banah - It means to develop buildings, to begin to build, to rebuild, to repair or to Set up.
it can be applied to building a nation, a church, a marriage, a family… in Solomon uses in context of the temple.. Solomon stresses the importance of God being in the center of the building process.
It can be applied to building a nation, a church, a marriage, a family…
Solomon who build the first temple… spoke of the master builder… being apart of the process of building… whether it is a church, a nation, a family…

1. Seek a God Vision for your life..

In Solomon uses banah in context of building the Lords house..
Psalm 127:1 ESV
Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
God is about building… building up his people, .
psalms 127:1

A Latin motto says, Nisi Dominus Frusta. It comes from the first words of this psalm and means “Without the Lord, Frustration.” It is the motto of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, appearing on its crest, and is affixed to the city’s official documents. It could be attached to the lives of many who are trying to live their lives without the Almighty.

“Speech to the Convention for Forming a Constitution for the United States,” delivered in Philadelphia in 1787.

Solomon gives this admonition - that God should be at the center of the building process… whether its his temple, your life, you family.. if God is not in those plans that all that you thought was meaningful may just end up being hay and stubble…
to be wise in the way that we go about building our lives.. because if God is not in those plans that all that you thought was meaningful may just end up being hay and stubble…
Benjamin Franklin understood the futility of work without God and expressed it well in his “Speech to the Convention for Forming a Constitution for the United States,” delivered in Philadelphia in 1787.

In that speech he said,

Benjamin Franklin was not a Christian; he was a deist, though he appreciated Christians. He thought well of George Whitefield, the Calvinistic evangelist, for example. Franklin understood the futility of work without God and expressed it well in his “Speech to the Convention for Forming a Constitution for the United States,” delivered in Philadelphia in 1787.

In the beginning of the contest with Britain when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for the Divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence. To that kind Providence we owe this opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten this powerful Friend? Or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance? I have lived for a long time (81 years), and the longer I live the more convincing proof I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it possible that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings, that “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” I firmly believe this, and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall proceed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel.

We are going back to Haggai… a minor prophet… one of the last three Prophets in the OT.. Haggai, Zephaniah and Malachi...
Solomon gives us some wisdom here that if God is not in those plans that all that you thought was meaningful may just end up being hay and stubble…

Our text this morning is back in the book of Haggai… one of the the minor prophets… one of the last three books written in the OT…
What we find in the book of Haggai is this theme of presence of Christ and spirit being the Driving force and motivator in our lives.

The
one of the last three Prophets in the OT.. Haggai, Zephaniah and Malachi...
We are going back to the book of Haggai…He is a minor prophet…the difference between major prophet is simply the size of the book.
Haggai is ministering to the remnant of Jews who have returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple… it was during a period of history called the post Exilic period…
In 586 BC Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonian empire… it included destroying the city walls, Solomon temple.. and taking the Jews captive…
For 48 years they are in exile in Babylon - until Cyrus made the degree that Jews could return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple… 50 000 people return… The first structure they build was the Temple… Nehemiah would come later and build the walls… In order to build a house they knew that it was important to get the spiritual life back first..
The temple represented the spirtual life of the nation…. No temple, no presence. if the temple was there, God would meet his people there.
I want us to take a minute to think about
I want us to think through this metaphor of being builders… It implies that we have a place in the body of Christ to impact… that ministry is not just for those who have titles…pastors… but the harvest is plentiful pray that the Lord of the Harvest would send laborers… In Haggai day it took 50 000 people at least to get
I want us to see something about the Character and heart of these Jews who are called the remnant…
The remnant were the right people at right time who had the right heart to see the spiritual life of the nation restored…
They were 100 % behind the vision. The fact that they went back to Jerusalem when it lay in ruins tell me they had already bought into the idea/ the Vision of Rebuilding the Temple.. They trusted that God was able to do more abundantly that what they could thing or ask...
They gave sacrificially.
The fact that they went back to Jerusalem means they had already bought into the idea/ the Vision of Rebuilding the Temple..
…not only gave of themselves time and energy...but they gave of their resources…
But they had the foresight and insight that God was going to build the nation.
… they not only gave of themselves time and energy...but they gave of their resources… to provide the materials for rebuilding… It cost them something… when we give in tithes and offerings we a pouring into the vision… giving tells us about our priorities.
They had was some flesh in the game… they not only gave of themselves but they gave of their resources… to provide the materials for rebuilding… It cost them something...
Ezra tells us that the first thing the people did when they arrived in Jerusalem was take a freewill offering toward the rebuilding of the house of God. It was a substantial offering. Ezra says,
Ezra 2:69 ESV
69 According to their ability they gave to the treasury of the work 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000 minas of silver, and 100 priests’ garments.
As Ezra tells it, the first thing the people did when they arrived in Jerusalem was take a freewill offering toward the rebuilding of the house of God. It was a substantial offering. Ezra says, “According to their ability they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 drachmas of gold, 5,000 minas of silver and 100 priestly garments” (). In our weights the gold was 1,100 pounds or 13,200 ounces (Troy weight), for a value somewhat in the excess of five million dollars
). In our weights the gold was 1,100 pounds or 13,200 ounces (Troy weight), for a value somewhat in the excess of five million dollars
They gave...According to their abilities.... God is not going to ask you give more than you are able to give… What is astounding is the size of the offering!
What is astounding is the size of the offering…
In our weights the gold was 1,100 pounds somewhere in the neighborhood of todays value in the excess of five million dollars .…now that means that the average gift was 100.00…
Now, what you have is the right people, at the right time… with
collectively we are investing into the vision.
God brought together these 50 000 people with a unique gifting to build his temple then… collectively they invested into the vision.... The offering was somewhere in the region of 5 million dollars in todays terms… Each one gave according to their abilities and resources with these resources began build the temple.. …
according to their abilities and resources they began build the temple.. … but something happened about two years into the project - they began to get pressure from the outside and slowly this pressure brought the work to a standstill..
but something happened about two years into the project - they began to get pressure from the outside and slowly this pressure brought the work to a standstill..
God brought together these 50 000 people with a unique gifting to build his temple… to display His glory on the Earth…
they began build the temple.. with zeal...
they got discouraged...
to display His glory on the Earth…
… If you find that things are undone or unfinished in your life your are often going find underlining problem… is discouragement.. Think many times we give up too soon on a vision… because we get stuck… The definition of a vision is a preferred future..... Vision is a powerful tool that we often don’t use...
You can think of terms of a preferred future for your life…
Vision… A basic definition for vision is a preferred future..
After two years of building they simply burned out and focused on other things… like building their own homes… and taking care of their own things… while the walls and the temple was still in ruins…
Andy Stanley in his book visioneering, defines vision as, "A clear mental picture of what could be, fueled by the conviction that it should be."
If you find that things are undone or unfinished in your life your are often going find discouragement as underlining problem
Have you ever had that moment of inspiration…
Andy Stanley in his book visioneering, defines vision as, "A clear mental picture of what could be, fueled by the conviction that it should be."
It is
Have you ever had that moment of inspiration…
you get inspiration… an idea… vision of something...
let me give an example, the idea for our Christmas program with Ned.. started with Bob and Pam after an Alt meeting… they started talking about the program and they got excited about this idea of having a character act out some of the scenes..… and what followed was the action to make it happen and everyone got on board..
now it can go two ways.
Discouragement can paralize us.... Discouragement..
What I love about Haggai… Is that these people of gold… they made sacrifices… they just suffered what many of us have suffered from and that is from discouragement.
and everyone got on board and it worked..
getting excited about the idea… and what followed was the action to make it happen and everyone got on board..
After two years of building they simply burned out and focused on other things… like building their own homes… and taking care of their own things… while the walls and the temple was still in ruins… Discouragement can paralize us.... Discouragement..
Now, there is a critical point with vision.... it can go two ways.. you can be encouraged or discouraged… We need to be careful not to be too quick to stifle creativity among us… God uses gifts among us… and these gifts dragnet reach different people… I like to talk about experimenting with vision— if Im not sure some thing is going to work.... because it gives room for failure…
Dictionary of Bible Themes 8713 discouragement

A sense of unhappiness arising from a loss of confidence in one’s own abilities, in the reliability of God or in the power of the gospel. Discouragement can occur in the Christian life, especially when there is resistance to the gospel or in instances of personal failure. Scripture provides reassurance for those who experience discouragement

and after two years of building they simply burned out and focused on other things… like building their own homes… and taking care of their own things… while the walls and the temple was still in ruins… So, Haggai message is one of awakening
.when we are Discouragement we tend to move away from the vision.
The problem when we cave into Discouragement is moves us further and further away from the vision.
Many in our day are like that.
So, Haggai message is one of awakening… its one of getting up from discouragement… It is similar to the message that God gave to Gideon… when he says Stand up you mighty man of valour...
The remnant been in Jerusalem for 16 years and had done no work on the temple… Listen their is some hope here… If God has put something into your heart and it is dormant… God can in just a moment reignite your heart… This is the message that Haggi..
These people want to know the will of God and do it. At least they did at one time—perhaps when they were in a Youth for Christ group in high school or in Campus Crusade or InterVarsity Fellowship during their years in college. Perhaps they were zealous for God in the years immediately following their conversion.
Haggai message is one of awakening… its one of encouragement....
But life has moved on. Now there is a job or a wife or children (or any one of a dozen other things) to think about, and somehow they have let the work of God slide.
So, Haggai message is one of awakening… its one of encouragement....
… It is similar to the message that God gave to Gideon… when he says Stand up you mighty man of valour… There is a time for reflection --- there is a time for repentance ---- there is a time for restoration ----They were to Reflect on their lives… they were to Reflect, Repent and be restored… in other words they needed their passion to be restored.
Time for them to consider their ways… Now is the time to Rebuild…
They were to Reflect on their lives… they were to Reflect, Repent and be restored… in other words they needed their passion to be restored.
How do we build vision into our lives…

2. Allow God’s word to RE- ignite your passion.

Passion is an interesting word. In modern usage, passion often has a positive connotation. But in the New Testament, the word most often translated passion usually has a more negative meaning. It is usually associated with baser passions, such as lust or evil desires. The New Testament word more closely tied to the modern notion of passion is compassion.

The word translated compassion literally means “rumbling in the gut or stirring of the bowels.” That is not too appealing until you remember that the bowels, not the heart, were the symbolic center of life in the first-century worldview. Compassion, in the biblical sense, is the deep motive that drives a person's actions. Compassion is part of a person's core values, the heart issues that propel actions

It’s easy to become desensitized to the social issues facing us on a daily basis… For example the homeless population can become a nuisance… What compassion does is reaches out to needs...

In the social chaos, street kids found themselves at the bottom of the pile, often addicted to sniffing glue, involved in prostitution, and suffering from disease and malnutrition. The reason for their subterranean living space was that paramilitary gangs were killing the children who lived on the streets above. One gang member said, "Killing these kids is like killing lice. We call them 'the disposables.'"

Appalled at the situation in his home country, Jaramillo (or 'Papa Jaime as he is affectionately known) went on to rescue as many kids from the sewers as possible, using his money to build a home where they receive an education and live in a loving Christian community. To date he has changed the lives of thousands of children.
One of the Problems in Haggai’s day.. is people became inward focused… They lived for the day and they lived for themselves… The problem is they became preoccupied with other things…
returned to rebuild the city of
They became disconnected from the vision of reBuilding...
The temple represented the spirtual life of the nation…. No temple, no presence. The temple was there, God would meet his people there.
These are not bad people they are the remnant --- they were the sacrificial --- you could say the core group.... they got distracted from what was their mission... What we learn from Haggai is that word of God is central to igniting passion.

DIY Bible Study How Haggai Can Transform Your Life

The people had just begun their work and they needed inspiration to carry on.

What I love about Haggai… I that these people of gold… they made sacrifices… they just suffered what many of us have suffered from and that is from discouragement.
what happened is they got discouraged along the way… and after two years of building they simply burned out and focused on other things… like building their own homes… and taking care of their own things… while the walls and the temple was still in ruins… So, Haggai message is one of awakening… time for them to consider their ways… Now is the time to Rebuild...
The people had just begun their work and they needed a word from God…
Proverbs 13:12 ESV
12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
Proverbs 13:2 ESV
2 From the fruit of his mouth a man eats what is good, but the desire of the treacherous is for violence.
Proverbs 13:2
We need to understand the role of God’s word in igniting compassion..
They were to Reflect on their lives… they were to Reflect, Repent and be restored… in other words they needed their passion to be restored.
The word of God is what is going to ignite your passion…
The word of God is what is going to ignite your passion…
Haggai 1:13 ESV
13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke to the people with the Lord’s message, “I am with you, declares the Lord.”
Haggai 1:13–15 ESV
13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke to the people with the Lord’s message, “I am with you, declares the Lord.” 14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
a. The Word of God
Haggai is called the messenger of the Lord.... … He is the postman.... He is the delivery system… the word is Malak which means someone who carries a message... It is a communication from a commissioned messenger. His respcnsibliltity is to deliver the message to the people...
God still speaks to us today through his word…
There is responsibility of the messenger to deliver the message and for the hearer to receive the message.
Anytime we stand up and proclaim the scriptures we are declaring the word of God… It is quite a responsibility…
There needs to be a level of anticipation with preaching of the word of God… because it is strategic.....
What is needed is that God would speak to us through his word..
We need to know that as we listen to a message… we need to get past the person delivering the message.... He is the delivery system…We need to ask ourselves what is God saying to me through this verse today...
When we listen to a sermon… we need to go past the person delivering the message. Preaching is a grace given to the body of Christ… sometimes we get stuck on the person… giving the message… God uses the falible and the weakness men …
We need to ask ourselves what is God saying to me through this verse today...
What is astounding is how short Haggai’s message is two words… “I am with you.”
Ephesians 4:11–13 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
He is the postman.... He is the delivery system… but what he is delivering is a message from God.
but what he is delivering is a message from God.
As pastor we spend time crafting messages… But, there is some much bigger going on in the process of preaching..… What is God saying to me in his word today… Love the way this reads… Haggai the messager of the Lord… He is the postman.... He is the delivery system… the word is Malak which means someone who carries a message... but what the message unique is Haggai is delivering a message from God.
Ephesians 4:11–12 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
eph 4:
Ephesians 4:11 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
Ephesians 4:11–12 ESV
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
Sometimes we get stuck on the person… giving the message… Instead of focusing on the purpose.. of the message..
God uses the falible and the weakness men …
As pastor we spend time crafting messages… But, there is some much bigger going on in the process of preaching..…
God uses this thing called preaching to proclaim his message..
What is astounding is how short Haggai’s message is two words… Whether it was a brieviated message… but is clear… “I am with you.”
What is God saying to me in his word today… The fact that God speaks to us .... There is a calling for Pastors to preach the whole council of God’s word.... because there is a day when people won’t endure sound doctrine..
Proclaimation of the Bible is central to igniting Faith and compassion. How should we receive the word of God...
2 Timothy 3:14–17 ESV
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:14–17 ESV

13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
1. You know the character of those who shared the truth with you, in Timothy’s case it is his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice.
1 Corinthians 3:13–17 ESV
13 each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. 16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

God does not move us beyond the gospel; he moves us more deeply into the gospel, because all of the power we need in order to change and mature comes through the gospel …. The gospel does not simply ignite the Christian life; it is the fuel that keeps Christians going and growing every day. Real change cannot come apart from the gospel.

Haggai’s message is short a sweet…simply , I am with you
Haggai’s message begins with the words, I am with you
The message begins with the words, I am with you
This phrase comes up a number of times the Bible… God said to Joshua be strong and courages because the Lord your God is with you where ever you go… Gabriel says to Mary, I am with you… Jesus when he commission his disciples.. He tells them “I am with you to the end of the age.

This is covenantal language.
Every-time you see that God says I am with you… you see something completed…

Haggai delivered the word of God… that is important… but what ignites that word is the work of the Holy Spirit
.

b. Word and the Holy Spirit

Last weekend, Donna and Sven were getting ready for COTS ministry and the pilot light was out on both stoves.... We had to find the ignition switch and the nozzle to ignite… the stove… Now, there are certain conditions that are needed… that are needed to light the stove… One of them is proximity .... you have to be flame has to be close as possible to the gas nozzle to ignite it… We need the Word of God… but we also need the power of the Holy Spirit.
The word of God is needed… but in order for passion… you have to close to the word.
So… Haggai gave the sermon… it was short… it was clear.... it was to the point.... “I am with you.” The message was delivered.... but then the spirit of God came down.
Haggai 1:14–15 ESV
14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
Response and willingness to do the work was the result of the Lord working on hearts… Can I tell you how churches grow.... its when the Holy Spirit ignites hearts… God starts with the governor and then the priests and the people … spirit awakens them…
Then new enthusiasm experienced by the people for the rebuilding project was not merely the result of hype that had been artificially induced, whether by themselves or by their leaders.
2. Rebuild broken places
Haggai now makes clear that the enthusiasm experienced by the people for the rebuilding project was not merely the result of hype that had been artificially induced, whether by themselves or by their leaders.
It was the Lord who “stirred up” (wayyāʿar) the spirits of all those concerned with the work.
When the Spirit of God - ignites - the logos the written word it becomes the life giving word of God..
Rebuild broken places
We are told that the remnant came and worked on the house of the Lord…

When we are thinking of making positive changes we use words like re- purposing, re-building, re -thinking, Resolutions,

RE simply means “Again.” When you on your computer and the browser jams up we talk about refreshing the page.... It speaks of fresh start.... Restart, Reboot, Reconnect… Renewal....
Renewal is part of God’s purpose for our lives…

To acknowledge the Lord as God has implications for ordinary decisions of life. It is to live before One who is all knowing, all-powerful, and who has an agenda. He has a plan that impinges on the details of our life. The people who had returned from Babylon through God’s grace and leadership soon tried to put Him at the edge of their awareness. They had their own agenda, building comfortable homes for themselves while God’s house lay in ruins (v. 4).
Through Haggai’s preaching, the people were moved to respond to the Lord’s command to build His house for His glory.

Haggai 2:1–4 ESV
1 In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet: 2 “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, 3 ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? 4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the Lord. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord. Work, for I am with you, declares the Lord of hosts,

3. Know that God is going to do something New.

God is going to do something different than he has done before… God spoke through the prophet Isaiah and told them that he was going to do a new thing..
God is going to do something different among the exiles … God spoke through the prophet Isaiah while still in Babylon and told them that he was going to do a new thing..
God has already spoken through the prophet Isaiah and told them that he was going to do a new thing..
Isaiah 43:19 ESV
Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
Often OT prophecy have an immediate and future fulfilment… in the immediate context Isaiah is speaking to the Exiles in Captivity… this is before they return… God says He is going to do a new thing… you are going to be a different kind of community… This is a messianic prophecy — speaks of Christ… that John the baptist preached in the wilderness preparing the way of Christ … God was doing a New thing…
God’s always doing new things.. As the second took shape their was this moment of realization hit that it was totally different from the first temple… In the book of Ezra we are told when the priests who had seen the glory of the first temple wept out aloud when they saw the completion of the second temple… The reason was that the second temple did not compare in size or beauty with the temple of Solomon which Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed.

Haggai picks up on this theme of comparison…

As the people returned to their task they must have been overcome with depression as they realized that their new structure would never equal the one that had been lost.

Haggai 2:3–4 ESV

Every church has gone through a time when things were probably what some consider the glory days… people seemed to be more connected more involved… The problem is living in the shadow of by gone days....
Haggai 2:3 ESV
‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes?
In order to get to where you need to be… you have to let go of the former things.... former pastors… former members.... former events..... former.... The reason is what God has ahead is much better… because God is doing something greater…

The Teacher’s Commentary 76: Hag.—Putting God First

First, the postexilic temple did not compare in size or beauty with the temple of Solomon which Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed. It must have been discouraging for the people to compare what they were able to do with what David and Solomon had accomplished with the resources of a wealthy and powerful kingdom. Yet God announced through Haggai that “the glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house” (v. 9).

haggai
Your future will always be greater than your past… How do I know that —
Proverbs 4:18 ESV
But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
Because what is coming is much better… because God is doing some thing greater..
God wants to something greater in your future… the bible tells us that...
We so easily go to comparisons… now to then.... but what we need to be doing is embrace what God has ahead for us.
Yet God announced through Haggai that “the glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house” (v. 9)
Haggai 2:9 ESV
The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the Lord of hosts.’ ”

What might be considered less than was actually going to be greater than…
One of the accusations against Jesus was that he claimed that he would destroy the temple made by hands and in three days he would build another, not made with hands… What he was talking about was a spiritual temple
When you think about it that the first pro-type temple was Moses — tent of meeting… God would meet with him outside the camp of Israel.... That became something a little bit bigger… tabernacle travelled with Israel… then during David and Solomons reign… it became huge… the temple… gold furnishings.... then its reduced to rubble… the next temple a little smaller.... the Herod the great wanting to get favor from the people rebuild the temple… it was also a spectaculor temple… but it too was destroyed in 70 Ad..
What both Haggai and Jesus were alluding to was a day when God would to something new when it came to his presence..
God was going to do a new thing...
God no longer was going dwell in temples made by man --- His presence was going to dwell within his people.
God no longer was going dwell in temples made by man --- His presence was going to dwell within his people.
1 Corinthians 6:19 ESV
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
What was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was fading away came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!
We have wisdom coming to us through the ages… Solomon tells… unless the Lord builds the house
Haggai says consider your ways— you build for yourself and their is holes in your money bags..

Jesus tells the parable of the wise man and the foolish man… the man build his house upon the bedrock -

25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26

the foolish man built his house upon the sand…

27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
