Purpose of John
John 20:
John 20:30
John wants to introduce us to the Son of God.
The best way for us to be introduced to Jesus is through stories.
Introduce someone & tell stories about them...
Intro
John 5:18-
A quick reminder of where we are at:
Most recent is the healing at Bethesda of the lame man at the pool
(we are going to discuss the results of that action today)
John 5:15-17
Before that there was the healing of the Nobleman’s son (this was in Cana, where he had previously turned the water into wine)
Right before that there was a mini two day revival going on in Samaria, who the Jews hated.
This happened because of the discussion with the Samaritan woman, who was insistent on telling everyone around her that she had met the Messiah.
Prior to this, Jesus was lecturing Nicodemus on expanding his vision of seeing salvation for more than just the Jews.
I see here that there is a pattern of Jesus paying attention to those that society has cast aside.
Those that nobody looks at, or pays attention to.
Those that everyone seems to think is a burden on the whole of society.
Some of us may fit that bill.
Let me ask you, does this describe you?
If so, this message is for you.
I want to encourage you to take some time to listen today, because we get the opportunity to listen in on Jesus defending His actions.
Actions that He has done, on our behalf.
Jesus is defending His authority.
You see, Jesus has the right to speak & act on the behalf of His Father to forgive sin, pronounce judgment, promise eternal life, & heal those that are suffering today.
He does this for those that believe in Him, as well as to those that don’t.
He gives everyone an opportunity to experience the love of the Father.
Let’s take a look at the text.

Many of these sermons have come out of my quiet times with the Lord, and I was just reminded by my Pastor on Sunday (Pastor Nate Elarton) that not everyone necessarily knows how to study scripture.
So I want to give you a quick example.
Even if you leave with nothing else, try using this form of scripture study.
Because if I understand Scripture correctly, we should be transformed into Jesus’ image a little more, each time we approach Scripture.
This can only happen, if we are intentional in the way we approach God.
So what are some of the observations that I have on this.
The Jews (almost anytime you see this in this Gospel of John, this is referring to the leadership of the Jews)
There is a subtle fight for authority here or perhaps a moral high ground, you see, the Jewish Leadership at that time had egos that you just wouldn’t believe.
The Jews are stating that Jesus is breaking the Sabbath
Jesus seems to be saying that He thinks the leaders are getting this all wrong, good is being done here, but they are getting bogged down in the semantics of the situation.
Jesus is stating that He is greater than the Sabbath
Jesus is stating that He is greater than the Sabbath
The Jews were worried about Blasphemy, or besmirching the Name or Character of God, by Jesus making Himself equal, by calling Him His Father.
I think for one, that they did not believe that the Messiah, or the Anointed One, would come during their time.
They may have not believed the prophecies.

7:
V. 12 Your Offspring: NASB translates this as “your descendant” as singular or Seed
זֶרַע (zě·rǎʿ): n.masc.
זֶרַע (zě·rǎʿ): n.masc.;in the NASB that word is translated as descendant (singular), but literally means Seed.
This is the same
posterity, i.e., one that is related more than one generation removed
Gen. 3:15
We know these references now refer to Jesus, but the Jewish leaders were not so sure about this, so they struggled with the authority they saw Jesus wielding.
