We Have A Creator God

Genesis 1:1

January 14, 2018

Introduction:

Henry Morris stated in the New Defenders Study Bible-“This opening verse of the Bible is unique, the foundation of foundations, probably the first words ever written down, either revealed to Adam or written directly by God Himself. One who really believes Genesis 1:1 will have no difficulty believing the rest of Scripture.

God is eternal, existing before the Universe, and is omnipotent having created the universe. Therefore nothing is impossible with God, and He alone gives meaning to everything.”

No other piece of written literature is taught or spoken against as this first chapter of Genesis.

Verse one of chapter one tells us “what” God did; the following 55 verses in chapter one and two tells us “how” He did it.

I. God Declares His Existence- vs. 1

Note-notice that when the “beginning” began God was already there!!!

God simply declares that He exists and wastes no time in attempting to prove that He exists.

David Platt Sermon Archive He Is the Supreme Creator

God is the supreme Creator. He is transcendent above all creation. This means as the supreme Creator, He is distinct from creation. God is not a part of creation; creation is not a part of God. God is supreme over and above, transcendent over creation. The supreme Creator.

בָּרָא (bārāʾ). vb. to create. Used only of God creating, never of humans making things.

This verb is used only of creative acts performed by God. It appears five times in the creation narrative of Gen 1–2: God created (bārāʾ) the heavens and the earth (Gen 1:1; 2:4), the creatures of the sea (Gen 1:21), humankind in his image (Gen 1:27), and creation as a whole (Gen 2:3).

Genesis 2. A Simple Factual Statement regarding God Work as Creator (1)

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth: This tells us that God used no pre-existing material to create the earth. The ancient Hebrew word bara (created) is specific. It means to create out of nothing, showing that that God created the world out of nothing, not out of Himself. God is separate from His creation. Unlike Eastern and pantheistic perceptions of god, the Bible teaches the universe could perish yet He would remain.

Every man knows deep down in his inner being that there is a God. Religion is man’s attempt to define God. Christianity is God’s reaching out to man.

A. He is the God of Eternity past.

John 1:1–3 KJV 1900
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Psalm 90:2 KJV 1900
Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
Gleanings in Genesis Chapter 1: Creation and Restoration (Genesis 1)

“In the beginning God.” This is the foundation truth of all real theology. God is the great Originator and Initiator. It is the ignoring of this which is the basic error in all human schemes. False systems of theology and philosophy begin with man, and seek to work up to God. But this is a turning of things upside down. We must, in all our thinking, begin with God, and work down to man.

Hebrews 1:10 KJV 1900
And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
The book of Genesis begins with God. This is right way to begin anything. In fact, if we do not begin with God will make a mess of things in a hurry.
Evolution has tried to begin without God and look at how foolish the arguments are that it tries to advance. We need to begin our days, our travels, our marriages, our careers, yea our entire lives with God.

B. He is the God of Earth’s present state.

Many in the millennial generation want to believe that God created the earth but then he took his hands off of everything and he just let things happen. Even though sometimes it may feel like God is just letting things happen the truth of the matter is he is still the God of our present lives.
Colossians 1:16–17 KJV 1900
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Only through God’s sustaining power is this world’s space “held together”, it is his hand that holds the stars in their courses, directs the planets in their orbits, and controls the workings of the universe.
Hebrews 1:3 KJV 1900
Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Note the phrase “upholding all things by the word of his power”, this literally means that not only does the word of God create but the word of God also sustains all life on this earth.
The Book of Colossians A. The Person of Christ (1:15–18)

“By Him all things consist.” By Him all things hold together and by Him all things have permanence. The creation would immediately return to nothingness if He withdrew His support. He is the philosophical “one within the many,” the principle of cohesion which holds the universe together, the divine glue which holds everything in its place, the person who gives meaning to all the discrete things of creation.

The Lord of the Universe is completely involved in the life of every believer:
John 14:27 KJV 1900
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
John 14:23 KJV 1900
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
2 Corinthians 6:16 KJV 1900
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Ephesians 3:17 KJV 1900
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

C. He will be God of Eternity Future.

Revelation 21:3 KJV 1900
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
Revelation 1:8 KJV 1900
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
The truth is God is a God of eternity past, of the present state of this world and this universe, and he will also be the God of all future eternity. But these truths mean absolutely nothing unless you know him as your personal God and your personal Saviour.

I. God Declares His existence.

II. God Demonstrates His power- VS. 2-31

Genesis 1:1 is a summarizing verse the rest of this chapter describes in detail how God demonstrated his power through the creation of the world’s out of absolutely nothing. Once again if we get a grasp of the truth of Genesis 1:1 we will have no problem coming to grips with the fact that we are sinners in need of a Savior and that same creator God can become our Savior God.

A. God demonstrated his power through His Word.

Here is a truth: When God spoke, everything simply came into existence.
Eight times in Genesis 1 we read “And God said.”
Genesis 1:3-and God said – and there was light.
Genesis 1:6 – and God said – and there was heaven.
Genesis 1:9 – and God said – and there was earth and the oceans.
Genesis 1:11 – and God said – and there was grass and trees.
Genesis 1:14 – and God said – and there was the Sun and the moon.
Genesis 1:20 – and God said – and there were the sea animals and the birds.
Genesis 1:24 – and God said – and there were land animals.
Genesis 1:26- and God said – and there was man.
We see in this first chapter of Genesis God speaking and everything in the universe is coming into existence from nothing because of the power of His Word.
Because all creation is formed by his word all creation is subject to his word.
This same word of God has the ability and the power to create new life out of dead life.
Do you need to hear His powerful Word today?

B. God demonstrated his power through his goodness.

See verses: 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, and 31- “it was good.”
Genesis 1:10 – and God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:12 – and God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:18 – and God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:21 – and God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:25 – and God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:31 – God saw everything he had made, and, behold, it was very good.
This is not some standard Of goodness that is outside of or apart from God. This is goodness that literally emanates from God himself.
The creation is a reflection of all the beauty and goodness that is found in God.
Psalm 34:8 KJV 1900
O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
Lamentations 3:25 KJV 1900
The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
All of the order and the beauty and creation reflects the glory of God and demonstrates the goodness of God.
Psalm 119:68 KJV 1900
Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.
When we see all the wonderful things in creation they point us to God, and to the nature and the character of God. When we look at creation we can’t help but to say it is good, and it is good because God is good.
Psalm 143:10 KJV 1900
Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: Thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.
Romans 2:4 KJV 1900
Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
We are the recipients of this awesome goodness of God because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
Psalm 23:6 KJV 1900
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Philippians 1:6 KJV 1900
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
I. God declares His existence
II. God demonstrates His goodness

III. God Defines Mans Limitations

Note: these next three areas are areas of great confusion in our society today.
A quick google search will reveal that society identifies as many as 71 different gender identities!!!
A search of marriage: man/woman; man/man; woman/woman;

A. God defines a person’s gender-vs. 27

Genesis 5:2 KJV 1900
Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
Matthew 19:4 KJV 1900
And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
Mark 10:6–8 KJV 1900
6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; 8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

B. God defines marriage-vs. 27-28; 2:24

MAR´RIAĠE, n. [Fr. mariage, from marier, to marry, from mari, a husband; L. mas, maris; Sp. maridage.]

The act of uniting a man and woman for life; wedlock; the legal union of a man and woman for life. Marriage is a contract both civil and religious, by which the parties engage to live together in mutual affection and fidelity, till death shall separate them. Marriage was instituted by God himself for the purpose of preventing the promiscuous intercourse of the sexes, for promoting domestic felicity, and for securing the maintenance and education of children.

“Marriage Math- One + One= One”-Clarence Sexton
Ephesians 5:31 KJV 1900
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
Genesis 5. The Marriage of Adam and Eve (24–25)

Many want to believe that the monogamous, two-parent family was invented in the 1950’s by American television icons Ozzie and Harriet, but Adam and Eve are the original family. This is God’s ideal family. This isn’t polygamy. This isn’t concubinage. This isn’t the keeping of mistresses. This isn’t adultery. This isn’t homosexual co-habitation. This isn’t promiscuity. This isn’t living together outside the marriage bond. This isn’t serial marriage. This is God’s ideal for the family, and even when we don’t live up to it, it is still important to set it forth as God’s ideal.

C. God defines time-vs. 1

Note- “in the beginning”- infers that there must also be an end.

Ecclesiastes 3:2 KJV 1900
2 A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
Hebrews 9:27 KJV 1900
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Proverbs 27:1 KJV 1900
1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; For thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
James 4:14 KJV 1900
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
