Introduction
Introduction
is a battleground.
Its one of the darkest passages in the bible, its known by theologians as the Fall.
Mans fall from grace, fellowship, life, peace, joy, hope, companionship, family, love, everything good.
Its an important passage because it introduces us to so many persons that we will come to know well in each of our lives.
It introduces us to the our ancient enemy - the Devil.
It introduces us to our selves, and shows us our weakness.
and it introduces us to God and his grace, which saves us.
There are 3 charicter sets to this story, the
Lets start by looking at:
The Method of the Devil
The Method of the Devil
1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Crafty, subtle, cunning, cleaver- skilled in the art of deception. The Devil is an ancient being of great deceptive skill and is cleaver’er than you.
Do not imagine some ghastly, obviously evil creature who’s motive is as obvious as the horns on his head.
2 cor 11
3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
The devil does not look like the stuff of nightmares he looks like the treasures of fantasies.
and he comes, simply asking a single question:
“Hath God Said?”
This question, and it is phrased in may ways, accomplished one thing.
The thing every temptation hopes to accomplish:
It causes Eve to doubt the goodness of God.
Thats the goal, not to get you to hate god, or forsake god, or even become an atheist - not even devil is that stupid.
Its goal is simply to cause you and i to doubt the goodness of God.
Did God really love Eve, considering he was withholding such good fruit from her?
Does god really love you? If he loves you, why is he withholding?
Why do you suffer in pain, in depression, in financial crises, in marriage?
If God loves you why does he not give you that which your heart wants?
He did the same to Jesus in the wilderness:
If you are God’s son why are you hungry? why does your father not feed you? why are you alone out here all by yourself?
Church, the method of the Devil is to appear to be on your side, with your best interests at heart.
The Fall of Man
The Fall of Man
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
The actions of Adam and Eve in this verse are textbook for humanity.
This act of their plunged them into sin, death and misery, along with the rest if humanity.
and i will tell you, that when you behave the same way you cause pain and misery and heartache and regret to enter into your life as well.
What was it that they did?
They acted upon what they felt, not upon what was right.
They
This is the fall of every man, every woman, every person. It is humanities great and terrible weakness.
It is the great hollywood lie to follow your heart, go with your gut, follow your feelings.
VS
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Its how every tragedy starts:
People feel like they are ready to have sex - not married.
Then they feel like abortion is the right thing - murder
people feel like drinking is not a bad thing
people feel like its ok to smoke cigs and pot.
They feel like its fun to gamble - no harm done
Liberalism:
Man feel like he is woman
a human feels like they are a dog
an adult feels like they are a child.
As a result of all these feelings depression, misery, shame, guilt, murder, heartbreak, sorrow are all part of our lives.
Its not a question of does it feel right, its a question of is it right?
Finally:
God’s Reaction
God’s Reaction
The first question in the bible is found in v9
9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
Where are you?
God’s reaction, is to come and seek out Adam and Eve.
Not as a police man, but as a father.
It is the word of Jesus:
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
God is seeking to save sinners.
reminds us that although we have rebelled against God by not doing what is right, God wants to save us, not condem us.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
