Romans 3:23-24

Setting the Stage About God and Man before looking at this passage.

I. The original creation of man as described by .

27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

What does being made in the image of God mean?

#1. It means that we were made to reflect certain aspects of God to all of creation.

#2. Being made in the image of God means that we represent God in His creation.

#3. Being made in the image of God requires an active relationship with Him to properly reflect God to all creation, like a mirror.

II. Understanding the Glory of God as described in .

“I am the LORD, that is My name;

I will not give My glory to another,

Nor My praise to graven images.

8 “I am the LORD, that is My name;

I will not give My glory to another,

Nor My praise to graven images.

What is the glory of God?

The word for “glory” means the greatness, splendor and majesty of something.

In the Bible, there is the visible part of God’s glory and the invisible aspect of God’s glory.

The visible aspect of God’s glory is seen in –17 (NASB95)
15 Then Moses went up to the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain.
16 The glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; and on the seventh day He called to Moses from the midst of the cloud.
17 And to the eyes of the sons of Israel the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the mountain top.
The invisible aspect of God’s glory is seen by His attributes such as Omnipotence (unlimited power); Omnipresence (ever present); Omniscience (all knowing); holiness; goodness.

The glory of God has appeared at times through light as noted in “Arise, shine; for your light has come, And the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.”

Looking at Theme verse

I. The problem of sin

23 for all ahave sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

> Humanity has a problem with sin

- All are guilty of sin

* Sin is a problem that has affected all mankind.
* The fall as explained by has caused all of humanity to have a broken relationship with God.

> I believe that “fall short” doesn’t really convey the sense of what the verse is talking about.

* The fall as explained by has caused all of humanity to have a broken relationship with God.
New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (). La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation.
* The normal use of the word translated “fall short” can be seen in some of the other uses in the New Testament:
“I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”
“when the wine was gone
“Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait”
- The primary meaning of this word is to be in need or lacking of something rather than falling short of a mark.
* “fall short” is the rarely used meaning of this word.

II. The great news of Jesus

24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

> A person’s justification is a gift.

* The word “justified” speaks of having a righteous standing before God. The means of being justified is independent of works it is a gift. If it is a gift, then it is received like a gift rather than earned like a wage.

* The means of being justified is independent of works it is a gift.

* If it is a gift, then it is received like a gift rather than earned like a wage.

- The gift comes by the grace of God.

* A good definition of grace is that it isn’t a description of God but the way in which God has acted in Jesus: nothing forces God to do something except by His own will”. A man cannot merit God’s grace, it comes freely of God’s will to move and do as He pleases.
A man cannot merit God’s grace, it comes freely of God’s will to move and do as He pleases.

- The redemption is found in Jesus Christ.

* The language of ‘redemption’ has been used in slavery to speak of purchasing.
* Here a sinner is purchased from the judgment of sin & slavery to sin.
* The payment was Jesus Christ’s sacrifice.

> Justification brings us back into God’s glory

1st We have a relationship with Jesus Christ.
2nd We are able to see the glory of God now (not with our eyes but with our hearts) as we see God’s attributes at work in our life. “For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”
“For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”
3rd We also see God’s glory as it is working to transform us. (power, goodness, patience, omniscience, etc.) ”But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.”
4th We will fully experience God’s glory in the resurrection. “I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.”
“I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.”
