Responding to Difficult People
Responding to Difficult People
Our Response
Argue and try to reason with
In return, we get frustrated, annoyed, and tires us out
To start a conflict is to release a flood;
stop the dispute before it breaks out.
Proverbs
Don’t make friends with an angry person,
and don’t be a companion of a hot-tempered one,
What Our Response should be
Patience
A fool’s displeasure is known at once,
but whoever ignores an insult is sensible.
Honor belongs to the person who ends a dispute,
but any fool can get himself into a quarrel.
Proverbs 12:16
Jesus’ response:
Remain Silent :
They asked this to trap him, in order that they might have evidence to accuse him.
Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with his finger.
Asked Questions:
and asked him, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority to do these things?”
Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; then answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
Mark 11:28-29
Told Stories
Jesus replied to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
He said, “Say it, teacher.”
“A creditor had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Since they could not pay it back, he graciously forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more?”
Went to Scripture
Some Pharisees came to test him, asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”
He replied to them, “What did Moses command you?”
Set the Example - Love Them
Set the Example - Love Them
Don’t retaliate, don’t look to be prideful and take offense
We are called to Love:
Hatred stirs up conflicts,
but love covers all offenses.
“But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If anyone hits you on the cheek, offer the other also. And if anyone takes away your coat, don’t hold back your shirt either. Give to everyone who asks you, and from someone who takes your things, don’t ask for them back. Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.
Luke 6:27-31
We are Called to be a Blessing:
not paying back evil for evil or insult for insult but, on the contrary, giving a blessing, since you were called for this, so that you may inherit a blessing.
Put it into the Hands of the King
Put it into the Hands of the King
The Women came to the king to plead for her child
We are to bring our case to the King
-12 - We have a righteous king that will judge the world when He returns.
She was willing to allow the king to make His judgement
We often want to take the matters into our own hands.
Jesus will judge righteously at the end
. He will bring relief those who were afflicted
The King was discerning, able to make a righteous judgement
Jesus will judge righteously when He returns.
Conclusion
Conclusion
How do we deal with people?
Don’t respond with their response.
Respond with
Love, knowing that they are in distress
Patience, knowing that they have no joy or have lost it if believers
Praying for them, praying for their salvation if not saved. Praying for their growth in the Lord if they are believers.
