I. An Introduction to the Book of Proverbs: 1:1-7
A. The Author-Solomon: 1:1
1. Solomon: 1:1a
In 1Kings 3, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and asked him; what is it that I can give to you? For most of us this is what we are waiting for God to ask us, so we can get it all. But, Solomon begins to think, I am a young man and there is a whole lot of stuff I don’t know; so Lord give me an understanding heart. Lord I need to be able to discern between good and evil. God was so please with Solomon’s request that He gave him riches and honor like no one before or after him.
2. Son of David and Bathsheba: 1:1
In 2Samual 11 David takes Uriah’s wife get her pregnant and have Uriah killed to cover up his sin, she bores the child and the child dies. This is significant in our spiritual preventive maintenance because it signifies that when we sin there will be consequences for our actions but God will forgive us and can still use us. No matter what your sin is if you repent to Him and turn away from it, God will bless us and our children. Too often we sit on the side of road along this spiritual journey thinking nobody loves me because of all the things I have done or that people have done to me.
3. King of Israel: 1:1c
As King of Israel God uses Solomon build His temple. This is also significant, because we need to understand when we seek wisdom and understanding from God He will begin to use us to do things other people only dream of.

[4] In addition to the affirmation of each proverb there is usually a reason which follows. For instance the reason one is not to rob the poor or crush the afflicted is because the Lord will come to their defense (plead their case, take the life of those who rob them).

[7] Verses 1-9 and 10-31 can be related to one another in two possible ways: (1) they provide advice from a mother to a Son- king not to pursue women (v. 3) but to pursue the woman of character (10-31). The problem with this view is that it does not explain the other warnings as well in verses 10-31 (2) they provide advice from a mother to a son-king not to pursue those things in his strength that will destroy others (women [v. 3], strong drink [vv. 4-7]) and an exhortation to help the needy (vv. 8-9). Then she exhorts him in a positive way to pursue “Wisdom” as a partner. The problem with this view is that it seem to deny the literal sense of “woman”, but this figurative sense has already been used in Proverbs to personify folly and wisdom (cf. Proverbs 7-8). In addition Proverbs 31:10 was identified as wisdom in 8:11. Proverbs 31:11 speaks of fertility which comes from obedience to God’s word (cf. Dt 27-28), 31:14 describes wisdom as bring understanding from God (far away) that is profitable, and 31:15 affirms that wisdom works for us when we are not working (or are asleep; cf. Ps 127:2).
