Battles that changed the war
The Battle of Waterloo
Fought on June 18, 1815
Napoleon had returned to be king of France after a time of exile
Had beaten a Prussian force a few days before
Fought between France and two armies made up of an allied army under the Duke of Wellington and the Prussian army
Napoleon lost this battle
Four years later, the allied army marched on France signalling the end of Napoleon’s reign
The Battle of Gettysburg
Shaped the course for USA today
Fought on July 1-3, 1863 in Gettysburg, PA
General Lee wanted to make a push into the north and if he won Gettysburg was going to end up marching on Washington
The cavalry under the command of General Sam Buford engaged Lee’s army the first day. Even after being supported by two Union regiments, they were pushed back by a superior confederate force
The Union entrenched themselves on Cemetery Hill creating a fish hook line ending on Little Round Top
On day three, Less makes one last attempt to take Cemetery Hill in a charge known as “Picket’s Charge”
The Union forces repelled the attack, defended Gettysburg and changed the Civil War until April 1865 when Lee finally surrendered
Difference between Soul and Spirit
Difference between Soul and Spirit
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
The spirit is solely immaterial
The soul can refer to your immaterial self that makes up who you are or it can refer to your physical body
Your soul and spirit are attached in that they make up who you are spiritually and for eternity
includes your body in the greatest commandment therefore indicating a split between body and soul and the importance of loving God with your soul
Why Your Soul Matters
Why Your Soul Matters
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.
Hebrews word “nephesh” and Greek word is “psyche”
The soul makes you, you
Genesis 2:7
Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
2. The soul can be encouraged or discouraged
The law of the Lord is perfect,
refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
for you saw my affliction
and knew the anguish of my soul.
God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
3. You can offer your soul to God or Satan
In you, Lord my God,
I put my trust.
There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;
for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
is dealing with false teachers and the destruction they cause
With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed brood!
4. Your soul longs for something more
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
Verse 1, 5, 8
You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
your right hand upholds me.
Closing
Closing
Jesus is telling his disciples a few things before sending them off on a little mission trip
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.
