1. Claim to have Fellowship with God but live in Spiritual Darkness. (v.5-6)

What is fellowship?
What is fellowship with God like?
Only liars say they have fellowship with God and live in spiritual darkness. (v.6)
what would that look like?
Example:
Conclusion: if you claim to have a relationship with God and sin, your life is a lie, and you practice lies.
A person that practices the truth does not live a double life.

2. Truth Practicer (v.7, 2:1-2:2)

Lives in the light (v.7)
Fellowships with each other (other truth practicers) (v.7)
what would that look like?
Gets cleansed from sin (sanctification). (v.7)
Does not continue in sin (2:1)
When sins, then relies on Jesus (2:2)

Ray Comfort asks these questions to those who claim to be a good person:
Have you ever lied? ()
Have you ever cheated? (Ex 20)
Have you ever cheated? ()
Have you ever looked at a person with lust? ()
Have you ever treated someone or something greater than God? (ex.20)
Have you ever hated someone? ()
Have you ever cheated? ()
Then you are a lying, cheater, adulterer, idolater, and murder. at heart.
You fool yourself (v.8)
You do not practice the truth (v.8)
Proverbs 11:1 NLT
The Lord detests the use of dishonest scales, but he delights in accurate weights.
If God detests people with dishonest measurement of material things
How would God feel about people with a dishonest measurement of their heart?
You call God a liar (v.10)
because God says you have fallen short ()
Conclusion: If you have a dishonest measurement of you heart, you call God a liar and are even worse of a person.

4. Sinner who wants to be a Truth Practicer (v.9, 2:2)

Confesses sins to God (v.9)
This doesn't mean confess just to God because....
James 5:16 NKJV
Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
When we confess He is faithful and fair to forgive (v.9)
How faithful is God to His people that He always forgives!
How fair is God in killing His son so you dont have to die?
He died for us so that we don’t have to die for our own sin (2:2)
