God Speaks to His People

Things prevent us from hearing God’s voice.

a. Bring your reasoning into line with Scripture, not the other way around. It’s a question of “who is the final authority.” If you are a believer than you surrender that to God’s word first then your understanding. Not the other way around. b. Does that mean you will not eventually find understanding? Not at all. The question is Who is the final authority? That is your starting point. If you insist on scientific method then that is where you will start, if on emotional feelings then there, if human reason, then there. Everything you filter will come though what you think the authority is that is the highest one. God Claims to be the highest authority. Do you believe that and are you willing to submit to that end and begin to see the world though that lens.

A note on Authority
This can be something as simple as the need to be right in a matter (sin)
The Word of God is not for entertainment or amusement. It’s about connecting with God and aligning ourselvs with him
Isaiah 14:24 HCSB
The Lord of Hosts has sworn: As I have purposed, so it will be; as I have planned it, so it will happen.
Isaiah 14:27 HCSB
The Lord of Hosts Himself has planned it; therefore, who can stand in its way? It is His hand that is outstretched, so who can turn it back?

He is active, not just looking to fill your needs but a larger purpose

God speaks throughout the Bible in many ways.
Isaiah 14:24 HCSB
The Lord of Hosts has sworn: As I have purposed, so it will be; as I have planned it, so it will happen.
Isaiah 24 HCSB
Look, the Lord is stripping the earth bare and making it desolate. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants: people and priest alike, servant and master, female servant and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower, creditor and debtor. The earth will be stripped completely bare and will be totally plundered, for the Lord has spoken this message. The earth mourns and withers; the world wastes away and withers; the exalted people of the earth waste away. The earth is polluted by its inhabitants, for they have transgressed teachings, overstepped decrees, and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants have become guilty; the earth’s inhabitants have been burned, and only a few survive. The new wine mourns; the vine withers. All the carousers now groan. The joyful tambourines have ceased. The noise of the jubilant has stopped. The joyful lyre has ceased. They no longer sing and drink wine; beer is bitter to those who drink it. The city of chaos is shattered; every house is closed to entry. In the streets they cry for wine. All joy grows dark; earth’s rejoicing goes into exile. Only desolation remains in the city; its gate has collapsed in ruins. For this is how it will be on earth among the nations: like a harvested olive tree, like a gleaning after a grape harvest. They raise their voices, they sing out; they proclaim in the west the majesty of the Lord. Therefore, in the east honor the Lord! In the islands of the west honor the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel. From the ends of the earth we hear songs: The Splendor of the Righteous One. But I said, “I waste away! I waste away! Woe is me.” The treacherous act treacherously; the treacherous deal very treacherously. Panic, pit, and trap await you who dwell on the earth. Whoever flees at the sound of panic will fall into a pit, and whoever escapes from the pit will be caught in a trap. For the windows are opened from heaven, and the foundations of the earth are shaken. The earth is completely devastated; the earth is split open; the earth is violently shaken. The earth staggers like a drunkard and sways like a hut. Earth’s rebellion weighs it down, and it falls, never to rise again. On that day the Lord will punish the host of heaven above and kings of the earth below. They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. They will be confined to a dungeon; after many days they will be punished. The moon will be put to shame and the sun disgraced, because the Lord of Hosts will reign as king on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, and He will display His glory in the presence of His elders.
Isaiah 14:27 HCSB
The Lord of Hosts Himself has planned it; therefore, who can stand in its way? It is His hand that is outstretched, so who can turn it back?

God’s Pattern is lifegiving words

God Speaks words of Life It’s more than a warm fuzzy.
Deuteronomy 8:3 HCSB
He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then He gave you manna to eat, which you and your fathers had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 32:46–47 HCSB
he said to them, “Take to heart all these words I am giving as a warning to you today, so that you may command your children to carefully follow all the words of this law. For they are not meaningless words to you but they are your life, and by them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
How important is a word from God in our lives? IT BRINGS LIFE
Luke 7:14–15 HCSB
Then He came up and touched the open coffin, and the pallbearers stopped. And He said, “Young man, I tell you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.
Ezekiel 37:5–6 HCSB
This is what the Lord God says to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you will live. I will put tendons on you, make flesh grow on you, and cover you with skin. I will put breath in you so that you come to life. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.”

L Ezekiel 37: 5-6,10 What significance did God’s word have for the widows dead son? What effect did God’s word have on the valley of Dry bones?
Ezekiel 37:10 HCSB
So I prophesied as He commanded me; the breath entered them, and they came to life and stood on their feet, a vast army.

God’s words can bring Life

It’s not just about being an evangelist. We are called to speak life into one another. To write onto the hearts on men the life giving presence of God. The reason I use the word “can” in the title is because they only can if we speak them. It makes a huge difference when we take a moment and express to others what God has placed in our heart to say to them. We a bringers of life to those who are perishing starting now and all the way to the finish line.

God Speaks in various ways

Different ways God speaks. • Angels () • Dreams () • Symbolic actions () • Still small voice () • A burning bush () • Prayer () • Fire () • Writing on the wall () • Visions () • Prophets () • Preaching () • Miraculous sights () • A donkey () • A trumpet (,) • Fleece () • Casting lots (acts 1:23-26)
God spoke at “Various Times” ()
Hebrews 1:1 HCSB
Long ago God spoke to the fathers by the prophets at different times and in different ways.

It’s not a certain time of day or a age in life. God Speaks whenever and wherever.
It’s not a certain time of day or a age in life. God Speaks whenever and wherever. Two things you can do to make yourself open to hearing God. 1. Make yourself accessible to many opportunity’s for God to communicate with you. 2. Cultivate your relationship with Christ. God Speaks to Reveal.. God Speaks to Reveal Himself All of your life activity and behavior is revealed based upon your understanding of WHO HE IS. God reveals Himself to us Progressively Each one who encountered God in History encountered him at the place where they were. Abraham, Moses, Jesus even indicated that he only revealed what they could handle at that time. If God is not revealing a new thing to you ask yourself what thing is it that you are still needing to grasp before more is given. God Speaks to Reveal His purposes When God speaks to people he reveals his heart. God expects people to adjust their lives to him so that He can work through them to bring others to Himself and speak life into them. What is God’s purpose in each of the following? God Speaks to Reveal His Ways God’s ways are not the same as ours… David understands that God’s ways are not mans ways. , Often the way one acts is more important than what one does. The Way we do something can say more about what we believe about God than what we do. For example: Deceiving someone to get them to church, starting a war to force an truth on people. Neither are ways God would bring truth to people. We will be held to account for the WAY we engage the world with the gospel. An interesting distinction is made in Israel saw the end result of God or even him in action. But Moses came to understand the ways of God. When God is at work it’s a thing that will creat a since of holy awe and reverence that God is among us… Steadying the ark was a failure to understand the importance of following God’s way…. God Speaks for response (Today’s Conclusion) When God speaks to us it requires a response. God desires to see us act according to his character and identity that he has formed in us over the course of the relationship that we have with him. Its not about having some epiphany moment when you jump in the shower or having your coffee whip take on the shape of God’s daily word to you that gets you the info you need for the day. IT’s not an experience that you need to be looking for. Lets take a look a the soil in our lives. The First Heart response: Seed that fell by the wayside The Path well traveled. So much of the world has trampled your ability to allow the word of God to sink in and the devil comes a snatches it away. The Second heart response: Seed falling on rocky shallow ground Because of a refusal to dig in and let the word go deeply in us. When we don’t meditate on the word, or practice what we know this is where we wind up. The third heart response: seed which fell on thorny ground The world is too important to them. The busy rat race of time and distraction got in the way. He fourth heart response:seed that fell on good ground and produced a great harvest This is to desire that we want to have. I desire to know that God is in my life and working to produce an abundant harvest though me. Questions to Ask for a heart check… Have any obstacles or sins entered my heart? Am I letting the world trample my heart so that it is insensitive to a word from God.? Am I trying to juggle a word from God along with all my worldly cares and concerns? Am I quick to not only hear a word from God but to Obey it? What type of soil describes your heart. 1. Trampled, hardened soil ( a hear hardened by too much traffic) 2. Rocky, shallow soil ( entering the mind but not the heart) 3. Thorny, soil full of weeds (a life too cluttered with worldliness to sustain a word from God) 4. Fertile, receptive soil. Based on what you responded to God’s last word to you, are you ready to a new word from God? Why or why not? What did God say to you when you spent time with him this week? What will you do as a result? There is another one working to gain our attention But Work on knowing God so intimately that you can easily discern the difference. God Speaks to Reveal..

God Speaks to Reveal Himself

All of your life activity and behavior is revealed based upon your understanding of WHO HE IS.

God reveals Himself to us Progressively

Exodus 6:2–3 HCSB
Then God spoke to Moses, telling him, “I am Yahweh. I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I did not reveal My name Yahweh to them.

God’s ways are not the same as ours…

Isaiah 55:8–9 HCSB
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways.” This is the Lord’s declaration. “For as heaven is higher than earth, so My ways are higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

Luke 8:5–15 HCSB
“A sower went out to sow his seed. As he was sowing, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky ate it up. Other seed fell on the rock; when it sprang up, it withered, since it lacked moisture. Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. Still other seed fell on good ground; when it sprang up, it produced a crop: 100 times what was sown.” As He said this, He called out, “Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!” Then His disciples asked Him, “What does this parable mean?” So He said, “The secrets of the kingdom of God have been given for you to know, but to the rest it is in parables, so that Looking they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. The seed along the path are those who have heard and then the Devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And the seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, welcome the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and depart in a time of testing. As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit. But the seed in the good ground—these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, bear fruit.
