1. Understanding the Word, Christ

Matthew 16:13–18 ESV
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Understanding the Word

Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 53.82 Χριστός, οῦ; Μεσσίας, ου

53.82 Χριστόςa, οῦ m; Μεσσίας, ου m: (literally ‘one who has been anointed’) in the NT, titles for Jesus as the Messiah—‘Christ, Messiah’ (but in many contexts, and especially without an article, Χριστός becomes a part of the name of Jesus; see 93.387).

Χριστόςa: ἐπυνθάνετο παῤ αυ’τῶν ποῦ ὁ Χριστὸς γεννᾶται ‘he inquired where the Messiah was to be born’ Mt 2:4.

Μεσσίας: οἶδα ὅτι Μεσσίας ἔρχεται, ὁ λεγόμενος Χριστός ‘I know that the Messiah, the one called Christ, will come’ Jn 4:25.

In a number of languages Χριστός (or Μεσσίας) as a reference to the Messiah occurs in a transliterated form based either on Χριστός in Greek or on Messiah in Hebrew. However, in some languages an attempt is made to represent the significance of the terms Χριστός and Μεσσίας by translating ‘God’s appointed one’ or ‘God’s specially chosen one’ or ‘the expected one,’ in the sense of one to whom everyone was looking for help and deliverance.

Christ occurs 529 times in the New Testament
Christ is a Greek word. It is a translation of the Hebrew word, Messiah.
Messiah appears only twice in the NT, ;
John 1:41 ESV
41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
John 1:41 ESV
41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
John 4:25 ESV
25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.”
Christ in the LXX — General sense
John 4:24 ESV
24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Anointed High Priests
Prophets (“the anointed of God”)
Kings of Israel (“anointed of the Lord”)
The One Christ — Specific
Jews understood only one Christ would come
The Christ
Luke 7:19 ESV
19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?”
Matthew 2:4 ESV
4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

2. Understand CHRIST’S expectations

Ever have something turn out different from what you expected?

EXPECTATIONS THAT CHANGED:
Something you cooked?
A job?
A relationship?

What did the Jews expect of THEIR Messiah?

Isaiah 61:1–2 ESV
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
Luke 4:21 ESV
21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Philip Yancey: Jewish seminary books:

Political revolutionary
Jewish seminary books:
Magician who married Mary Magdalene
Galilean charismatic
A rabbi
A peasant Jewish cynic
Pharisee
An anti-Pharisee Essene
An eschatological prophet
A “hippie in a world of Augustan yuppies”
The hallucinogenic leader of a sacred mushroom cult

Would the real Messiah stand up?

To be served, enslaved, burden or to serve, free, and relieve?
Heal or dominate?
Mission of mercy or might?

Application

How do I express my thankfulness to Jesus for saving me?
How does Christ’s healing of my sins work?
How are my expectations different?
How do I submit to His sovereign will?
When life does not turn out the way I expected, how do learn to instead look for God’s blessings in the way He sees fit to give them?

3. Living CHRIST’S Name

Was Jesus full name: Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus Christ?
or
Matthew 26:71 ESV
71 And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
Matthew
John 19:19 ESV
19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”
So, Christ is a title that became a last name.
Gentiles, outside of Jerusalem, made it a last name.
Acts 11:16 ESV
16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
Acts 11:26 ESV
26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.
John 11:26 ESV
26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
Acts 11:26
So, what name would have been on Jesus’ mailbox?
What about His title them?
How does His current status, position, and identity confirm this?
Peter saw Jesus as the fulfillment of the heavily loaded expectations of the OT Messiah.
How do our words and lives reflect the declaration that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God?
Romans 6:5 ESV
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Romans
How does my resurrection life reflect my resurrection name?

Living His Name: Do I pursue this planet’s passions or glorifying God?

1 John 2:15–17 ESV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Living His Name: Do I boldly Go or fearfully cower in a corner?

Romans 8:14–15 ESV
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
)

4. Walking CHRIST’s Path

Romans 14:5–8 ESV
5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.
Was His path the Majestic extrinsic proud path of a King on a throne in Jerusalem or intrinsic humble content suffering servant on a cross?

4. We should not be surprised when suffering comes, but we can be confident that it will produce things of eternal value.

Luke 24:26 ESV
26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
Romans 8:16–17 ESV
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Did the two on the road to () on the Road to Emmaus know the path Jesus had taken?
Luke 24:25–26 ESV
25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
How do I know if I am walking the path He wants me to walk? (If I walk with Him I will get where He wants me to go).
Luke 24:
2 Corinthians 5:7 ESV
7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.

Am I guarding my thoughts & intentions of my heart?

; ;
Philippians 4:7–8 ESV
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Proverbs 4:23 ESV
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Isaiah 26:3 ESV
3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

Do my words reflect my confession?

Matthew 12:37 ESV
37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Do my actions reflect my confession? I.e. How we treat a poor visitor

James 2:20–22 ESV
20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works;
What course corrections should I make?

5. Marked by Christ’s Mission

As a sinner I need a Savior. Does my life reflect that need?
1 Timothy 1:15 ESV
15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
Luke 19:10 ESV
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Philippians 2:6 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
Phil.2:
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Do I confess my sins to Jesus? How? When? Where?
Do I live the humble life of a grateful slave that has been set free? How?
