Authentic Discipleship is the process by which people are brought into a relationship of obedience to Christ that affects every area of their life and causes them to be more like Jesus.
According to the Great Commission, we are to be about the business of making disciples.
Authentic Disciples Abide In Jesus (vs. 1-11)
Authentic Disciples Abide In Jesus (vs. 1-11)
Ten times in 11 verses abide is used
The first sentence in vs. 4 is almost like a dare in the structure of the Greek.
Abide - to establish as home
Where you abide is where you belong
“Watch what I will do if you abide in me...”
Thibodeaux and Boudreaux and the guy who jumped from the bridge
The promise of abiding is the fruit that will be born in our lives
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23

Authentic Disciples Love One Another (vs. 12-17)
Authentic Disciples Love One Another (vs. 12-17)
A Disciple is not just committed to Christ, he is concerned with the needs of others.
Jesus gives some very strong instruction regarding the importance of a disciple loving those around him.
And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
“This is the great and foremost commandment.
“The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
“On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
“The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
Matthew 22:37
But Jesus goes even further to describe how we are to love one another as disciples:
“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
Disciples must go further than loving their neighbors as they love themselves, they are to love one another as Jesus loved them!
Disciples must go further than loving their neighbors as they love themselves, they are to love one another as Jesus loved them!
“By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
As Disciples learn to abide in Jesus, they will love one another more and more!

Authentic Disciples Expect Persecution (vs. 18-25)
Authentic Disciples Expect Persecution (vs. 18-25)
We must be honest with those who we disciple, the more they abide in Jesus, the more they love one another, the more the world will hate them!
“If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.
John 15:19
We don’t like to celebrate this promise of Jesus!
If we are like Jesus, we will NOT be like the world!
If we are like Jesus, we will NOT be like the world!
Discipling people is helping them to see that they can rejoice even when persecution comes because that is to be expected:
“Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
Well, that doesn’t sound very likely to attract people to become disciples does it?
What Jesus promises after persecution is the key to surviving whatever this world may throw at you!
Authentic Disciples Depend Upon the Holy Spirit (vs. 26-27, 16:5-15)
Authentic Disciples Depend Upon the Holy Spirit (vs. 26-27, 16:5-15)
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,
John 15:26
Just hang on, he says, the helper is coming!
To the disciples in the early days of the church, this promise was, as yet, unfulfilled.
To the disciple today, to the one who has received His freely offered gift of salvation, the promise has been fulfilled.
Paul says in that the Holy Spirit has sealed us “for the day of redemption.”

The disciple who abides in Jesus, learns to love others as Jesus loves him and can face anything that comes his way in the assurance that GOD IS WITH HIM!
