In our 21 Day journey in prayer, we looked at several important principles—essential for experiencing the life God intends for you.
In the prayer of Nehemiah, we discovered the critical principle of repentance—turning from our sin and trusting in God alone.
Last week we identified three essential principles in the prayer Jesus taught His disciples: Humility, honoring God, and forgiving others.
Text: Colossians 1:9-14
Colossians 1:9–14 ESV
9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 1:9–14 LBLA
Introduction
Colossians 3:15–17 ESV
15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:15–17 LBLA

Gratitude - A Command

Thankfulness is not a suggestion for the believer—it is an imperative.
Colossians 3:15 ESV
15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
Colossians 3:15 LBLA
The peace of Christ is a crucial to fulfill the command to be thankful.
If you are facilitating strife and disunity—if you struggle promote peace in the body of Christ—you will also struggle to be thankful to God.

Gratitude - An Attitude

A life that is properly aligned with God is a life that demonstrates an attitude of thankfulness.
Colossians 3:16 ESV
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:16 LBLA
The word of Christ saturating every aspect of your life promotes an attitude of gratitude.
Ignorance of God’s word and failure to engage in authentic worship hinders thankfulness.

Gratitude - A Way of Life

Thankfulness is evidence of a life transformed by God’s power.
Colossians 3:17 ESV
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17 LBLA
When you do everything for God—for His honor and glory, then you will naturally become thankful.
When you do things to satisfy your desires, you will tend to be focused on elevating your own ego, rather than giving all the thanks and glory to God.
