I. The Pharisee and the Sinful Woman – Luke 7:36-46
Luke 7:36
“Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.”
Luke 7:37
“When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume,”
Luke 7:38
“and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.”
Luke 7:39
“When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
Luke 7:40
Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said.
Luke 7:41
“Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.”
Luke 7:42
“Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
Luke 7:43
Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
Luke 7:44
Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.”
Luke 7:45
You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet.
Luke 7:46
“You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet.”
Point: We were all wretched sinners before salvation.

“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.”
Romans 3:10-11
10As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; 11there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.

Luke 7:47-48
47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven — for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.” 48Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
Perfect passive indicative (both 47 & 48)
Luke 7:49
The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

B. We Need someone to pay the debt – Heb 9:22, 1 Cor 15:3
Hebrews 9:22
“In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”
1 Corinthians 15:3
“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,”
C. We Need to receive forgiveness by faith – Luke 7:50, John 1:12-13
Luke 7:50
Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
John 1:12-13
12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
A Prayer of Faith
“Dear Lord, I now confess that I am a SINNER who has SINNED against You. I understand and believe that Jesus Christ, God’s Son, died on the Cross for ALL OF MY SINS and rose from the dead. I do now receive Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. Thank You, Lord, for FORGIVING MY SIN and giving me the gift of Eternal Life. Amen.”
Conclusion:
Let’s respond to Christ with reverent worship for the blessing of complete forgiveness.
