Mark 10:43–44 NKJV
43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all.

1. “Leader” vs. “Servant”

Which word do you think God likes to use to describe someone who leads others? Leader or Servant?
The NKJV used the word, “leader,”
Example - Moses
Joshua 1:1–2 NKJV
1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: 2 “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel.
Jesus the Revolutionary
Jesus overturned the world’s thinking about “leader.”
World’s Servant - low prestige, low respect, low honor, low-value, low class
Jesus’ Servant - synonym for greatness
Jesus the Teacher
The kingdom of God was a community where each member served the others.
- Jesus’ purpose here on the earth
Mark 10:45 NKJV
45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Paul -
Galatians 5:13 NKJV
13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
Our loving service should spread to the needy world around us. But in most churches, a few people carry the load.
Idea of leader as “loving servant of all” would not appeal to most people.
Most want to secure their own comforts but “servant” is Jesus’ requirement for those who want to lead in His kingdom.
Contrast is shown clearly in .
Mark 10:42–43 NKJV
42 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.
The disciples believed they will sit on glorious thrones and judge the tribes of Israel ().
Matthew 19:28 NKJV
28 So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
But they do not know how to get there - .
Matthew 20:22 NKJV
22 But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to Him, “We are able.”
Principles of Leadership
Sovereignty Principle of Spiritual Leadership - God assigns places of leadership in His sovereign will ().
Mark 10:40 NKJV
40 but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared.”
Suffering Principle of Spiritual Leadership () - the task is not easy but still willing to follow Master all the way.
Mark 10:38 NKJV
38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”
Jesus’ only time say “example” was serving ().
John 13:15 NKJV
15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
NT writer’s “example” was suffering ().
1 Peter 2:21 NKJV
21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

2. The Spirit of Servanthood ()

Isaiah 42:1–4 NKJV
1 “Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. 2 He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth. 4 He will not fail nor be discouraged, Till He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands shall wait for His law.”
