Today we begin by looking at specific leadership positions within the church and we are going to start by looking at Preachers.

Of all the church leadership like elders, deacons, and preachers I can guarantee that the preacher’s role is one that people are most ignorant on.

Now there are a lot of reasons for this...

First and foremost preachers don’t typically preach on their roles and responsibilities.

About elders and deacons yes but not usually on preacher roles, as a general rule.

Second, people don’t study preacher roles on their own much like they do concerning elders and deacons.

This ignorance has lead to a lot of misconceptions about what preachers’ responsibilities are as a preacher.

I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count the number of sound gospel preachers that have had their support removed by congregations because of a lack of knowledge concerning the “biblical preacher.”

So today, we are going to look at the “life and work” of a preacher as the Bible defines it some of the “misconceptions” that can cause great problems in congregations.

Preacher Misconceptions

Preachers are “the” evangelist

Whether we like to admit it or not most people see the preacher as “paid” to evangelize the lost in the community.

We see passages like given as “proof text.”

Eph 4:1

And it is true that the word “evangelist” here translated can be applied to preachers in the most generic since because the word literally means “proclaimer of the gospel.”

In fact every time a preacher preaches God’s Word he is preaching the gospel.

However, when people apply the word “evangelist” to preacher they are saying “do our job teaching the lost in our community for us” more often than not.

As we will see in the “point two” preachers aren’t paid to evangelize the community.

Preachers are “the” visitation team

Once again many if not most in the brotherhood think preachers are “paid” to visit the widows, orphans, and sick for the congregation.

We see passages like quoted as a “church leader” passage.

Now, this passage isn’t just associated with preachers, it is also placed on elders and deacons but the misconception is with responsibility.

Preachers aren’t supported by congregations to visit the sick, widows, or orphans.

Preachers are “the” workers for the congregation

If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a thousand times directly or indirectly we pay the preacher to...

Do the bulletin, mow the grass, change the sign, clean the building, etc...

I put this because you can insert just about any number of jobs around the church building and some member somewhere has cried out “that’s the preacher’s job.”

Preachers work for the local church

The biggest misconception that members and preachers make is that they work for the church.

Gospel preachers DO NOT work for the church they work for God!!!

Summery

Preachers are supported i.e. paid for a reason but it isn’t for any of the things mentioned thus far.

Should every preacher do their best to do what they can in evangelism, visitation, and works around the church building that need taking care of…of course but that isn’t why they are “paid” they do those things for the same reason everyone else should too, because it is the Christian thing to do.

The majority of any preachers time during the week must be studying and meditating on God’s Word.

I spend on average 15 hours per sermon and Bible class.

Preachers must teach against sins and other problems the congregation might have whether they like it or not.

Preachers must not listen to those that would try and limit God’s Word in its proclamation.

There are two reason a congregation “should” support a local preacher.

To study God’s Word enough to preach sound doctrine.
