Image Of Humility (Part 2)
Image Of Humility (Part 2)
Background
First, it is clear that Paul wanted the church to know how things were going for him in his imprisonment (1:12-26) and what his plans were should he be released ().
Second, there appears to have been some discord and division in the church and so the apostle writes to encourage humility with a view toward unity (2:1-18; 4:2-3).
For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.
P
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.
Since we are suffering for Christ
and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,
We should have encouragement in Christ
Comfort from his love
Participation / Fellowship / communion with the Spirit. Through the Spirit we can receive strength
From this should produce affection and sympathy toward one another.

Let there be absolutely no room for anything but joy in his thoughts of them.
This can be done:
By being of the same mind.
The expression is focused on an attitude and not on critical thinking per se. It is a call for the church to focus on what they have in common in Christ and their relationship bound up together with him.

“being united in one spirit” and “having one purpose
Being in full accord and of one mind.
Paul’s way of emphasizing to the Philippians’ their need for genuine unity.
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
The way we can portray an Image of Humility
Surrender Or Suffer -
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit (Vanity)”
pride without proper basis, vain conceit, empty conceit
Selfish ambition: pride without proper basis, vain conceit, empty conceit
excessive appreciation of one’s own worth or virtue
excessive appreciation of one’s own worth or virtue
excessive appreciation of one’s own worth or virtue
Conceit: excessive appreciation of one’s own worth or virtue
Points of Pride
You take everything personal.
Your feelings are the most reasonable.
Your Desires are the most important.
I’m All In
“But in Humility”
Humility: Humbleness, modesty
“Count others more significant than yourselves.”
Either I can surrender to Self or Suffer and humble self!
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Philippians
Set The Bar!
