Acts 2:14-236
Acts 2:14–28 CSB
14 Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Fellow Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning. 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all people; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18 I will even pour out my Spirit on my servants in those days, both men and women and they will prophesy. 19 I will display wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and a cloud of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. 22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to these words: This Jesus of Nazareth was a man attested to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through him, just as you yourselves know. 23 Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him. 24 God raised him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by death. 25 For David says of him: I saw the Lord ever before me; because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices. Moreover, my flesh will rest in hope, 27 because you will not abandon me in Hades or allow your holy one to see decay. 28 You have revealed the paths of life to me; you will fill me with gladness in your presence.
Acts 2:14–36 ESV
14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17 “ ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 18 even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; 20 the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. 21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ 22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him, “ ‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; 26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. 27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ 29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’ 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
WE COME to the third Sermon on the Revelation of the Church. We ended last time with the Jews accusing the apposles of being drunk after the holy spirit came down. Here we see peter bodly address the crowd.
Peter cites three OT passages demenstrating tat the messiah would be a decendent of David, rise from the dead, and exalted to the right hand of God. He proclaimes that Jesus has fulfilled all theese. The accual message was most licklty much longer than was recorded but Luke provides as with an abbriviation of the event
The Prophesy
Acts 2:14 CSB
14 Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Fellow Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words.
As we have seen before. Peter was the spoksman for the deciples. He stood up raised his voice and proclaimed
Although he had denyed Jesus three times, he again Bodly proclaims who Jesus is Just as He had when asked them who do people say that I am.
Peter askes for the attention of those Jews who live in Jeruselem and visitors, rember, a great celebration is going on.
Peter says “let me explain this to you, pay attention to my words” He says get this, this is importent!
The theme of Peter’s sermon is that Jesus is the Messiah. There is no other message that could have been more unwelcome to the Jews who had rejected and crusified him. Therefore Peter did not announce his theme until he had covered each Jewish objection spired by the holy spirit Peter begins a long adderss. that brings an incredible responce with many people. by putting their faith in Jesus. Peter was addressing those who were most confused by the multiple languages spoken.
Acts 2:15–16 CSB
15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning. 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
The Jewish Day was from six to Six therfore the third hour is 9:00 A.M. This was also the time of morning prayer. Therfore Peter’s first task was to correct a misonseption by the audience. He wanted to point out how absolutly abserd it was that they thought they were drunk. on the third hour of the day as Jews rarly ate before this point and the certenly did not drink.
Peter begain his sermon by quoting which was a prophesy that spoke of Gods outporing of the spirit on all his people. Joel desribed it as a sign of the last days when God would visit his people in a special way Peter declared that Joel’s prophesy was fulfilled in the spirits decent at penticost.
Joel 2:28-32
Acts 2:1–17 CSB
1 When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. 3 They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them. 4 Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, devout people from every nation under heaven. 6 When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 They were astounded and amazed, saying, “Look, aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 How is it that each of us can hear them in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts), 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the magnificent acts of God in our own tongues.” 12 They were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But some sneered and said, “They’re drunk on new wine.” 14 Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Fellow Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning. 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all people; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
which was a prophesy that spoke of Gods outporing of the spirit on all his people. Joel desribed it as a sign of the last days when God would visit his people in a special way Peter declared that Joel’s prophesy was fulfilled in the spirits decent at penticost.
Acts 2:17 CSB
17 And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all people; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
The term last days again refers to the church age. Which begain at pennicost.
The pouring out was happening at this verry moment. and because of it it allowed men and women to Prophesy and see visions.
Acts 2:18 CSB
18 I will even pour out my Spirit on my servants in those days, both men and women and they will prophesy.
He also noted that the pouring out of the spirit was not restricted by class. but it was to all people servents and free, male and female.
Acts 2:19 CSB
19 I will display wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and a cloud of smoke.
Acts 2:19–21 CSB
19 I will display wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and a cloud of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Acts 2:19–20 CSB
19 I will display wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and a cloud of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

“The sun turned to darkness and the moon blood” refered to the pleges in egypt, but reminded the listeners of the power of God.
In verse 21 He reminds everyone that all who call upon Christ shall be saved.
The proof of Jesus
Acts 2:22–23 CSB
22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to these words: This Jesus of Nazareth was a man attested to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through him, just as you yourselves know. 23 Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.
Peter Assumes, weather or not they want to admit it, that the crowd is filmiluar with Jesus’ works of Power. and he points directelly to his meraculous deeds that point to God being at work in Him.
Acts 2:22 CSB
22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to these words: This Jesus of Nazareth was a man attested to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through him, just as you yourselves know.
Acts 2:23 CSB
23 Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.
Acts 22:3 CSB
3 He continued, “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the law of our ancestors. I was zealous for God, just as all of you are today.
To an every day Jew the fact that Jesus was Crusified demonstrates that He could not be the Christ. His crusifixion showed that God had rejected and that he was a blasphemer. they quoted Duteronomy 21:23 Which states that everyone who hangs on a tree is cursed by God. To counter this Peter declared that Jesus was the Christ, and that his death was pre-determined by God. from the beginning . It was not an accedent or defeat but predetermined and part of divine puropse.

God planes everything out nothing is an accedent. even today God uses evel people to accomplish His plans as we see him do throughout scripture such as:
The Judges:
Joseph:
His Death:
and so on:
Acts 2:24 CSB
24 God raised him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by death.
Peter again afirmed the reality of the reserection He does not address the empty tomb at this point as Jews would have had an answer for that such as His body was stollen. Instead he focusess on prophesy, which the Jews held verry dear.
He shows the trimph of God who raised Jesus from the dead. Which demenstrates that the evil inteded by the Jewish bob was used by God for good. and by the reserection his death had been reversed.
Psalm 16:8–11 ESV
8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. 10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Point
