4 Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Fellow Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning. 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 And it will be in the last days, says God,

that I will pour out my Spirit on all people;

then your sons and your daughters will prophesy,

your young men will see visions,

and your old men will dream dreams.

18 I will even pour out my Spirit

on my servants in those days, both men and women

and they will prophesy.

19 I will display wonders in the heaven above

and signs on the earth below:

blood and fire and a cloud of smoke.

20 The sun will be turned to darkness

and the moon to blood

before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

21 Then everyone who calls

on the name of the Lord will be saved.,o

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to these words: This Jesus of Nazareth was a man attested to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through him, just as you yourselves know. 23 Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him. 24 God raised him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by death. 25 For David says of him:

I saw the Lord ever before me;

because he is at my right hand,

I will not be shaken.

26 Therefore my heart is glad

and my tongue rejoices.

Moreover, my flesh will rest in hope,

27 because you will not abandon me in Hades

or allow your holy one to see decay.

28 You have revealed the paths of life to me;

you will fill me with gladness

in your presence.,t

Acts 2:14 CSB
14 Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Fellow Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words.
-He summons the attention of both resedent Jews and visitors of Jeruslem
-The man who confessed that Jesus was the Christ the son of the living God and s
-He states Pay attention to my Words, “get This”
-The Theme of Peter’s sermon is that Jesues is the messiah There is no message that could have been more unwelcome to the Jews who had rejected and crusified him. Therefore Peter did not announce his theme until he had covered each Jewish objection
inspired by the holy spirit Peter begins a long adderss. that brings an incredible responce with many people. by putting their faith in Jesus. Peter was addressing those who were most confused by the multiple languages spoken.
Peter was addressing those who were most confused by the multiple languages spoken. many of the native born Jews were awed by this, it was probobly the diaspora contingent there present that most appreiated the incongruity of the situation
Acts 2:15–16 ESV
15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
Acts 2:15 ESV
15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.
Acts 2:15
-His first task was to correct a misconception by the audience. in this case to point out how abserd it was that they would be drunk on the third hour of the day. Jews rarly ate before this point, and they certenly did not drink wine.
The third hour is 9:00 A.M. The Jewish Hours were from 6 to 6 therfore this would have been at 9:00 A.M.
Peter cites the passage in Joel refering to this occurence
Peter to explain pentecost.
-Peter understands Penticost to be the fulfilment of Joel 2:38-32
Peter begain his sermon by quoting which was a prophesy that spoke of Gods outporing of the spirit on all his people. Joel desribed it as a sign of the last days when God would visit his people in a special way Peter declared that Joel’s prophesy was fulfilled in the spirits decent at penticost.
-This time of day was during morning prayer
Acts 2:16 ESV
16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
Acts 2:17 ESV
17 “ ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;
This pouring out was happening at this moment, when the holy spirit arrived.
One of the key fetures according to Joels prophest was that men and women would prophesy what the croud was hearing was one form of prophetec utterence.
Last days again here refers to the Church age.
Acts 2:18 ESV
18 even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
THe gifts of the spirit are not restrained by social position
Acts 2:19 ESV
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
The comming of the spirit markes the beginning of the age. “wonders in the heavens above” refers tp the omming of the Lord. theese signs will mark the end of the church age.
Acts 2:20 ESV

Acts 2:23 ESV
23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
Peter assumes that the crowd was familuar with Jesus’s works of power weather or not they would publicly admit it.
He however explains that his death was not unexpectedit was an importent part of the plan of God.
To the ordinary Jew the fact that Jesus was Crusified demonstrates that He could not be the Christ. His crusifixion showed that God had rejected and that he was a blasphemer. they quoted Duteronomy 21:23 Which states that everyone who hangs on a tree is cursed. To counter this Peter declared that Jesus was the Christ, and that his death was pre-determined by God. from the beginning . It was not an accedent or defeat but predetermined and part of divine puropse.
Acts 2:24 ESV
24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
Peter affirmd the reality of Jesus’ reserection from the dead. He does not address the empty tomb at this point but instead focuses on the Jewish issue of the reserctoon as fulfillment of prophecy. To accomplish this he cites
-Peter Shows the trimph of God who raised Jesus from the dead. which dementrates that the evil inteded by the Jewish mob was used for the greater good.
Peter stated that his death had been reversed by God in His reserection
Acts 2:25 ESV
25 For David says concerning him, “ ‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;

Acts 2:29 ESV
29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Acts 2:30 ESV
30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,
Acts 2:31 ESV
31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.
Acts 2:32 ESV
32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
Acts 2:33 ESV
33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
Acts 2:34 ESV
34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
Acts 2:35 ESV
35 until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’
Acts 2:36 ESV
36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
