Condition of Man

Before Sin

Man was perfect and upright.
Ecclesiastes 7:29 KJV 1900
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
Made after the likeness of God.
Genesis 1:26 KJV 1900
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Condition of Eternal Life

Perfect and perpetual obedience to the law.
Genesis 2:16–17 KJV 1900
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Matthew 19:17 KJV 1900
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Revelation 22:14 KJV 1900
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

After Sin

The whole nature was corrupted.
Genesis 3:7–12 KJV 1900
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. 9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
Gen
Through Adam’s fall, all of humanity have inherited a disposition to sin and therefore have become sinners.
Romans 5:19 KJV 1900
19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Our sins have also separated us from God.
Isaiah 59:2 KJV 1900
2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, And your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
Clear description of our fallen nature.
Romans 3:9–20 KJV 1900
9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known: 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. 19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Born with inclination to sin.
Psalm 51:5 KJV 1900
5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; And in sin did my mother conceive me.
We possess a carnal mind.
Romans 8:7 KJV 1900
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
There is nothing in the fallen nature of man that desires any good, or can appreciate spiritual things.
1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV 1900
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
The works of the flesh:
Galatians 5:19–21 KJV 1900
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
We can’t save ourselves from slavery to sin and death.
Jeremiah 13:23 KJV 1900
23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.
Jere
Job 14:4 KJV 1900
4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one.
Hence why we need to have a complete transformation of life; to be born again.
John
John 3:3 KJV 1900
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
John 3:7 KJV 1900
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
It’s not enough to perceive that God is kind or that He’s law is good.
Romans 7:16 KJV 1900
16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
Romans 7:12 KJV 1900
12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
Romans 7:14 KJV 1900
14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
14
Hence the cry of utter helplessness.
Rom
Romans 7:24 KJV 1900
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

What Then is Our Hope?

God has intervened in order that we might be saved, all without taking away our freedom of choice.
Genesis 3:15 KJV 1900
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Nor willing that this world should perish in sin.
2 Peter 3:9 KJV 1900
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
The Godhead gave themselves fully for our redemption. Including all the angels.
2 Corinthians 5:19 KJV 1900
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
Job 33:24 KJV 1900
24 Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.
Christ was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Revelation 13:8 KJV 1900
8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
In Christ we find life and light.
John 1:4 KJV 1900
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
John 1:9 KJV 1900
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
We’re saved by only One name under heaven.
Acts
Acts 4:12 KJV 1900
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Behold the Lamb of God!
John 1:29 KJV 1900
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
J
Christ has bridged the gulf between us and God.
John 14:6 KJV 1900
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
