Title

1 Samuel 17:48 NKJV
So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
We are looking at the reasons leading to the people of God being discouraged and afraid in the midst of a great battle
The Scripture tells us that when the moment came to fight the battle David “ran toward the enemy”
We listed three main reasons that the people of God were in fear
1 Samuel 8:18–20 NKJV
And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you in that day.” Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”
Be like the other nations, the king may judge us, king may fight for us
None of which did they find as a reality of the desires they had to abandon God
Their desire to be like the other nations had come true and now they were not known as the people of God but rather the servants of Saul
1 Samuel 17:8 NKJV
Then he stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.
It is a sad day for God’s people when they are known by any other name
A name is more than a word in the Middle East…it is an identity
Colossians 3:3 NKJV
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
The word hidden here is krypto - obscure, undisclosed, not readily apparent - to conceal protectively - especially during a difficult time
Hebrews 11:23 NKJV
By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command.
It implies keeping something for oneself - God has hidden us, kept us for Himself in Christ
A hidden treasure is protected, it does not protect itself
This is what God’s people forgot when they desired a King for their leader
The name over pur life should mark us as His!
1 Samuel 17:10–11 NKJV
And the Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.” When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
Notice the King, the one who was to lead, judge and defend them cowering in the shadows and overcome with fear
Literally the word dismayed here in the Hebrew means to be in a broken state, like a shattered glass
Isaiah 8:9 NKJV
“Be shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces! Give ear, all you from far countries. Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces; Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.
An object divided into two or more parts
You see their double mindedness had broken them in split desires
James 1:2–8 NKJV
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
A divided man - one who is staggering like a drunk
Jesus told His disciples
Matthew 7:24–25 NKJV
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
Here is a picture of a stable minded man
The storm is raging, the battle is fierce but his feet are planted solidly on the Word of God!
The loss of their identity in God has now led them to a place of fear and hopelessness!
In a day and age of “me, myself, and I” it is counterculture not to seek you own benefit or gain!
If you are truly a treasure hidden in the Master’s house, then it is not about me,myself, and I but rather Thy will be done
Galatians 2:20 NKJV
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
I live by faith in my abilities and desires? NO!
Romans 9:20–21 NKJV
But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?
Hidden in Christ should be out state of being not simply the words of our lips
Our strength and hope rest in the words of our Savior
Hebrews 13:5 NKJV
Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
If our confidence is in Him and we are hidden, we shall surely see the Salvation of our God
