Wait!
Wait!
Wait!
Wait!
Jesus had told them to wait, it would not be much longer (Act1:4-5)
4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Act1:
Well now it is 10 days later, so you get the time frame.
We have gone from Passover (picture of the death of Christ as our passover lamb) (Jn1:29)
Passover (picture death of lamb)
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Jesus appeared to them for 40 days (Act1:3)
to the feast of first fruits - which pictures the resurrection of the dead (1Cor15:20-23)
Now it is 10 days later, Pentecost
20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. 21 For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.
Pentecost was commemoration
22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming,
Fifty days after first fruits on the first day of the week after the Sabbath is the Feast of Pentecost, which we see as a picture of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church. To the Jews it was a celebration of the giving of the law and the two tablets, that is why there are two loaves of bread used in the Pentecost Celebration.
We gather on Sunday, the first day of the week in celebration and in remembrance of the day the Lord arose from the dead and the day the church was born and the Holy Spirit given.
At firstfruits the Priest would wave two sheaf of grain but at Pentecost it would be two loaves. The two loaves here would have leaven and leaven represented sin. The church would not be perfect, sinless until it gets to heaven.
17 Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.
Pentecost was a
commemoration - commemorating the gift of the law
It was an illustration - on day law given 3000 died; here on this pentecost 3000 were made alive.
28 So the sons of Levi did as Moses instructed, and about three thousand men of the people fell that day.
Exo32:2
23 “For they said to me, ‘Make a god for us who will go before us; for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’
41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.
Act2:
The two loaves which did represent the two tablets, now represent the two peoples, Jews/Gentiles coming together to be one, the church.
14 For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, 15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace,
Things that transpired at Pentecost.
Holy Spirit came (v.2)
Holy Spirit filled them (v.4)
Empowered them (v.14)
Convicted (v.37)
Holy Spirit given (v.38)
So the waiting is over, the promise is upon them.
I. Symbols and proof
I. Symbols and proof
Act2:1
Act2:1-2
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
So we have the day, Pentecost, and we know they were all together. Now some believe they were in hiding in the upper room (praying)
Some thought hiding out in upper room
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
Others thought they were in the temple
Lk24:
52 And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple praising God.
Either way, they were all together, they were in one accord when the promise happened.
We know what happen “a sound like a rushing wind” - - - the word wind is the same word pneuma, the same word Jesus used when speaking to Nicodemus (Jn3:7-8)
7 “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit was not anything new, HE has been around since beginning.
In creation (Gen1:1-2)
In Israel history (1Sam16:13)
In Jesus ministry (Lk1:30-37, 4:1)
But now there are changes in what the Spirit will do
Spirit will dwell in people, not just come upon people to empower
Presence will be permanent, not temporary as seen
16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
So we have sound like a wind, wind as mentioned has represented the Spirit before, and then there what appeared to be tongues of fire. Fire has previously represented the presence of God.
Previous use of fire as representation of God’s presence (Exo3:2)
2 The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.
Another thing we can learn from (v.3) is the sound came before the site. Commentator Jon Coursan says
“The Word of the Lord always precedes the work of the Lord.”
Man says “if I see it I will believe it.” God says “if you believe it, you will see it.” (2Cor5:7)
7 for we walk by faith, not by sight—
Now the Spirit filled the house (v.2) and filled them (v.4) and the filling caused the manifestation of tongues. As the Spirit gave them utterance. This speaking in tongues can be defined in the following verses so we allow the scripture to define the word. This outpouring did not cause them to fall on the ground and get “slayed by the spirit.” They were sitting (v.2) and the Spirit caused them to speak in the tongues, dialect of the gathering crowd (v.6). The Greek word here is dialektos (meaning language, dialect) this is different from what you find in 1Cor14 that Paul describes there.
II. Results of proof
II. Results of proof
5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.
7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 “And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?
Have you ever heard something and you wondered what was going on and had to go check it out?
That is what happened and the results were
bewilderment (v.5) amazement (v.7) astonishment (v.7)
We don’t want to get lost in the miracle of speaking in tongues here, but Luke’s theological purpose is not the tongues but the outpouring of the Spirit
5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
49 “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Baptized with Holy Spirit, given power from on high. This is a new change from Spirit coming on someone to filling someone. From temporary to permanent
The Spirit outpouring is for the birth of the Church, the place Jesus went to prepare for us. (Jn14:2)
2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.
And the way He went was the Cross, the grave, but the stone was rolled away and He rose as the scripture said and has ascended on High and assumed His throne and poured out His Spirit.
He assumed his throne (Heb1:3)
3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
He had already given the Apostles the instructions and now is the time for the action. (Jn15:26-27)
26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, 27 and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
They will testify, starting right where He said. (Act1:8)
8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
Global mission to be accomplished by the Church!
They were bewildered, amazed and astonished all before the gospel message was even preached.
Who were bewildered, amazed and astonished? the devout men. People who were followers of God who were in Jerusalem for Pentecost, they heard the sound and they came to check it out. - hopefully we are devout and when we see the Lord moving, the Spirit moving we check it out too.
Why were they bewildered, amazed and astonished? Because of what they heard.
Are there things that you hear, have heard that amaze you? Maybe its a scripture that suddenly comes to light to you and you see it and understand it like you never did before.
Like the men then, they had questions (v.7) we may have questions, but don’t let the questions keep you from seeking and receiving the answers.
That now leads us to who was hearing?
III. Who heard the results
III. Who heard the results
9 “Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.”
Notice the peoples who were there (Act2:9-11)
15 peoples, from the areas surrounding Israel. From the Parthians in the Far East to Rome and they were all hearing in their own language, tongue, dialect. They all had come together. Where God had confused and scattered them before at the tower of Babel (Gen11:1ff) here God is bringing them all together.
Who hears the results from us? Is it Vernonites, Locketites, how about Chilicothians or Fargonionians? Are we speaking to them, are we sharing the bewildering, amazing, astonishing work of the Lord with them?
What were they speaking (v.11)? The mighty works of God is what they were talking about to the all the different people there. - - - may we speak of the might works of God to the people we come in contact with too.
From the waiting for the promise, to the proof of the outpouring, we have seen the results to the people who were bewildered, amazed and astonished at what they were hearing, the mighty deeds of God brings us to the last point for today.
IV. The question
IV. The question
Do you ever have that question? What does it mean (Act2:12)?
12 And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
People when they hear something going on, gather to see what is going on, sometimes have questions about what is going on, or what does this mean? The meaning was going to come about shortly in the following verses, but for us today, we have the meaning (the bible) and you are the living results so live it out and show it in the word the thing that can amaze still today. That thing is more than a thing it is a who, and His name is Jesus.
