The Test

Text:  2 Cor. 13:1-10

I.  Absolute Truth - 13:1

A.  Absolute truth in the daily tests - Deut. 19:15; Num. 35:30; Matt. 18:16; 1 Tim. 5:19

B.  Absolute truth in the final test - Rev. 20:11-15

II.  Judgment is Certain - 13:2

A.  Confrontation cannot be avoided in the daily test

B.  Judgment will come in the final test - The Great White Throne - Rev. 20:11-15

1.  Eternal - Mark 9:47-48; 2 Thess 1:9; Rev. 14:11

2.  Punishment - Mark 9:48; Rev. 14:11

3.  Degrees - Luke 20:46-47; James 3:1; 4:17; 2 Peter 2:21

Why must there be such horrible judgment at the Great White Throne?

1.  Men’s wickedness must be punished - Deut. 4:24’ Heb. 12:29

2.  Everyone must bow before Christ as king - Philippians 2:10-11.

III.  Examine Yourselves - 13:5

The purposes of self-examination:

A.  Salvation - to see if you really are saved - 2 Cor. 5:17

B.  To prevent judging - Matt. 7:3-5; 1 Cor. 11:28; 31, 2 Cor. 13:5; Gal. 6:4

Consequences of judging - Rom. 2:1-5

1.  We condemn ourselves because we do the same things. - 2:1-3

2.  We will face the reproof of God - 2:3

3.  We show contempt for the riches of His kindness, tolerance and patience - 2:4

4.  We store up wrath against ourselves - 2:5

a. Rewards

The 5 crowns:

Crown that will last forever - I Cor. 9:24-27 (for those conquering the flesh)

Crown of rejoicing - 1 Thess. 2:19-20 (for soul winners)

Crown of life - James 1:12; Rev. 2:10 (Smyrna) (for those enduring suffering and trials)

The 5 crowns:

Crown of righteousness - 2 Tim. 4:8 (for those longing for Christ’s return)

Crown of glory - 1 Peter 5:1-4 (for faithful pastors & shepherds)

Our crowns will be given to Jesus as an act of worship - Rev. 4:10-11
