Introduction:
A. The basic point of discussion in religion is what are we to accept as the authority?
B. Many claim to love and follow Jesus, but reject the Bible as true and authoritative.
C. Let us see how Jesus viewed scripture.
I. THE SCRIPTURES ARE AUTHORITATIVE. John 10:35
A. Scripture cannot be broken by:
1. Traditions. Matthew 15:9
2. Opinions.
a. “I believe.”
b. “I think.”
c. “Somebody said.”
B. This is the issue!
1. Will Bible PLUS pope, Book of Mormon, creed books, etc. be authority in religion?
2. Holy Spirit guided apostles into all truth. John 16:13
3. Things apostles wrote are the Lord’s commands. 1 Corinthians 14:37
II. SCRIPTURES ARE ACCURATE. Matthew 5:17,18
A. Jot or tittle was the stroke of a pen.
B. Old Testament stories – Jesus believed them.
1. Creation of man and woman. Matthew 9:4,5
a. God made them.
b. He (God) said . . .
(1) Genesis 2:24 is not stated as the voice of God.
(2) Therefore God is the author of scripture.
2. The flood. Luke 17:26,27
3. Lot’s wife. Luke 17:32
4. Jonah. Matthew 12:39-41
C. Who decides that we believe Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount and dismiss the Old Testament accounts which Jesus believed and taught?
D. Paul’s argument hinges on one letter. Galatians 3:16
E. The scriptures are verbally inspired.
III. SCRIPTURES ARE THE STANDARD FOR LIFE. Matthew 4:4
A. Man must have a standard besides himself.
1. Man cannot successfully direct himself. Jeremiah 10:23
2. Word is lamp and light. Psalm 119:105
B. The word, scripture is the standard.
1. It must not be changed. Galatians 1:6-9
2. It is complete. 2 Timothy 3:16,17
3. It is the standard in doctrine and morality. 2 Timothy 4:2
a. Some say there is no standard.
b. To “reprove, rebuke” implies that there is a standard – the word.
Conclusion:
A. Do you love Jesus?
B. Do you believe Jesus?
C. Will you take His word concerning scripture?
1. Authority.
2. Accurate.
3. Standard for life.
D. The scriptures tell us the way of life, forgiveness.
