Spiritual Addition

Text:  2 Peter 1:5-7

The purpose

To keep us from being ineffective - 1:8-9

The Challenge: 

“Make every effort” = Gr. “pareisenenkantes”

“To add” = “epichoregein”

The Foundation:  Faith

The Virtues to be added

I.  Goodness

“arete” = moral goodness, virtue literally = “moral excellency” Used 5 time in NT = Phil 4:8; 1 Peter 2:9; 2 Peter 1:3, 5

II.  Knowledge

gnosis” = experiential knowledge - spiritual knowledge

“sophia” = wisdom

“gnosis” - Rom. 15:14; Eph. 3:19; Phil. 3:8; Col. 2:3; 2 Peter 3:18

III.  Self-control

“enkrateia” = (Acts 24:25; Gal. 5:2

IV.  Perseverance

“hupomone” — “staying under” - Rom. 5:3-4; 15:4-5; 2 Cor. 1:6; 6:4; Col. 1:11; 1 Thess. 1:3; 2 Thess. 1:4; James 1:3

V.  Godliness

“eusebeia”  = piety — man’s obligation of reverence toward God. - 2 Peter 1:3 and 3:11

VI.  Brotherly Kindness

philadelphia”   practical caring - Rom. 12:10; 1 Thess. 4:9; Heb. 13:1; 1 Peter 1:22; 1 John 4:20.

VII.  Love

“agape” — “desiring the highest good for others.” -  John 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 1 John 4:9-11

Faith and Love:

Col. 1:4-5; 1 Thess. 1:3; 2 Thess 1:3; Philemon 1:5

Conclusion — 2 Peter 1:8-9 

The growing Christian versus the Carnal Christian - 1 Cor. 3:1; Heb. 5:12-13; 2 Peter 3:18
