Caiaphas held this title from about 15 AD to 36 AD
Annas and Caiaphas co-served in the position of high priest during this time
John the Baptist started his ministry around 26-27 AD

LESSONS FROM JOHN THE BAPTIST
His method - Preaching
His message - Repentance
His motivation - Restoration (Introduce Israel to the Messiah)
PHARISEES - primarily middle-class businessmen who had no formal training in the mosaic Law - with some exceptions like Gamaliel, Nicodemus and Saul.
They had plenty of Zeal for the Torah and the prophets
Emphasis the oral law (commentary) making it equal with the Torah (started after Babylonian captivity)
Less involved in politics during time of Christ than Sadducees
SADDUCEES -More concerned with politics than the Torah
Sadducees
Large number of them were part of the Sanhedrin during time of Christ
They were closely aligned with the priesthood during time of Christ
They held a position of significant power
B. John’s description of Christ
Jesus is mightier than John
Jesus will baptize with Holy Spirit and fire
“His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Luke

INSERT THREE BAPTISMS
V. The beginning of Jesus’ Ministry
A. Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness
HE WAS LED BY THE SPIRIT
“An acorn is not an oak tree when it is sprouted. It must go through long summers and fierce winters; it has to endure all that frost and snow and side-striking winds can bring before its is a full grown oak.” Henry Ward Beecher
HE WAS TEMPTED BY THE DEVIL
The word “tempted” in the Greek contains two possible ideas:
1. A drawing away toward sin
2. A test for the purpose of development
All temptation is an issue of trust and dependency
Jesus would face testings that would challenge
FIRST TEMPTATION
Satan attacked what Jesus was at his weakest moment (not eating for 40 days he tempts Jesus with food) - the need to be satisfied
The sin was not that Jesus couldn’t eat but that it was not God’s provision. It was dependence on self and not God.
His identity as God’s son would be under-minded (
It was timely - at his greatest hunger
It was subtle - appealing to a genuine need
He would be offered Satan’s kingdom for God’s kingdom
It was undermining - challenging the identity of Jesus
Jesus overcomes by quoting the Word of God
WHY KNOWLEDGE OF THE SCRIPTURES IS CRITICAL FOR THE BELIEVER
You cannot be spiritually clean without knowing and applying God’s Word -
You cannot pray effectively without God’s Word abiding in you -
You cannot be sanctified without a knowledge of the Scriptures -
You cannot see through deception without knowing the Bible -
You cannot defeat the devil without an understanding of God’s written Word -
SECOND TEMPTATION
When Satan fails at one point, hie will attack at another - He perverts Scripture
The test was invalid and Jesus did not fall for it
You cannot order God to do ‘this’ or ‘that’
God will not protect us when we devise our own ways to test his faithfulness and love
, the passage that Satan used, was taken out of context
Understanding the Scriptures is our best weapon against the enemy!
THIRD TEMPTATION
Satan shows Jesus the kingdoms of the world
Jesus never denies the authentic claims of Satan
Satan comes to Jesus with the same strategy he used with Eve. “I give you a better life”
3. Satan is reminded of Jesus’s devotion and trust in His Father
Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.
“minister” means “to serve, to provide for one’s necessities”
Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
Sometimes God sends angels to us to minister to our needs
Jesus departs from Judea
Jesus departs from Judea
VI. The ministry of Christ in Galilee
(Opposition at home and a new Headquarters)
A. The Nature of the Galilean ministry
1.
From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Repent - Metanoeo GK - to think differently, change one’s mind for the better
Kingdom of heaven - as referring to "a process, a course of events, whereby God begins to govern or to act as king or Lord, an action, therefore, by which God manifests his being-God in the world of men" Edward Schillebeeckx - Belgian Roman Catholic Theologian 1914-2009
Synonymous with “Kingdom of God”
described by Edward Schillebeeckx as referring to "a process, a course of events, whereby God begins to govern or to act as king or Lord, an action, therefore, by which God manifests his being-God in the world of men"
Verses in Matthew, Kingdom of heaven 32x, Kingdom of God 5x
Kingdom of God 69 verses in New Testament
Only mentioned in Matthew - Less offensive to the Jews
Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,
Preaching - to announce
Believe - to trust
And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district.
And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.
Power of the Spirit - Dunamis GK - Strength, ability Dynamite
Same word used in for the believer
“He began teaching” - Teaching makes disciples
But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated.
Preaching - proclaiming the gospel - primarily for salvation
Teaching - establishing the gospel - primarily for discipleship
B. Ministry and rejection at Nazareth
The Return of Jesus ---
“taught in their synagogues - Why?
Jesus was called to the Jews
2. The Reading of Jesus ---
The Reading of Jesus ---
It was customary for guest of the synagogue (especially rabbis) to be extended an opportunity to participate in the service
The Reading of Jesus ---
His reading was most likely the regular Scripture reading, however, God created an open door for Jesus to proclaim His purpose
First, He would accomplish His works by the Holy Spirit
Second Jesus would have a five-fold preaching ministry
preach the good news to the poor
proclaim freedom to the prisoners
give sight to the blind
release the oppressed
proclaim the year of God’s favor
The Rebuke of Jesus ---
3. The Rebuke of Jesus ---
The Rebuke of Jesus ---
Jesus gives examples of Elijah and Elisha - how they only helped those outside of Israel because of unbelief.
4. The Repercussion —
The Rebuke of Jesus ---
They wanted to kill him but Jesus walked right through the crowd
The Repercussion —
THOUGHT: Unteachable people will always respond in self-righteousness and unbelief
THOUGHT: Don’t waste your time with these people. There are many others who will listen, believe, and repent
