Big idea from Paul to the Colossians
· Christ has defeated Satan and is sufficient for the Colossian Christians, making them complete and they must not be lured into the false teaching or shamed by the judgments or delusions of men into thinking that they needed to add things to Christ. Christ plus works, philosophy, mysticism or asceticism would rob them of the freedom Christ has given by His grace
20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

· The unhealthy culture of today and the judgment or delusion that comes with it will try to manipulate you in to adding something to Christ. Christ is all you need and we need to understand this and not be convinced by the modern false teacher. We must understand the things that culture tries to add to Christ and be ready to combat them and seek the truth of Christ’s sufficiency through His word and fellowship in the church. We are free from sin and death.

2:16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

We do not know specifically what the source or exact nature of the false teaching but we have a pretty good idea because of all the information Paul has given us.
The false teaching in Colossae was a real mixture of different approaches and attempts to lure the people away from the Gospel they had first learned from Epaphrus

The false teachers wanted the Colossians to believe that they were incomplete in the Gospel of Jesus if they did not adhere to Jewish law, they must add something to the Gospel.

In Romans scripture clearly expresses the believer should not be deterred by the judgment of others.

o Fires were lite on mountaintops to announce the new month and horns were blown in the cities and towns.
o At the new moon festival the Israelites were required to offer sacrifices according to Numbers 28:11-15
o Primarily these were peace and sin offerings.
You can find more about these feast and festivals in Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers
§ Sabbath
o The Jewish Sabbath was observed on Saturday which was considered the last day of the week and the 7th day when God rested after he had created the heavens and the earth and everything in it according to Gen 2:3
“So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.”
o The New Testament observance of the day of rest was generally celebrated on the first day of the week or Sunday
o John chapter 20, Acts chapter 20 and 1 Corinthians chapter 16 all indicate that the early disciples and the apostles observed the Lords day on Sunday. This was the day Jesus rose from the tomb.
· These rules and regulations had been nothing more than a “shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.”
o A shadow has no reality
o Only Jesus who was the reality can make the shadow
o The food festival and Sabbath regulations set by God to Israel were all things pointing to Christ without Him there would be no shadow and no salvation
o Jesus Christ is our food “the bread that came down out of heaven” (John 6:41).
o The Passover is not required for the Christians; Christ was our perfect and final sacrifice. “Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed” (1 Cor. 5:7).
o Why would non-Jewish or Gentile Christians need to observe the Sabbath? God granted them eternal rest “Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Heb 4:11-13)
o If we continue to preoccupy ourselves with these shadows now that the mystery and reality of Christ has come we are focused on pointless things.
· It would be okay for a Jewish Christian to keep these things if they wanted
· They were brought up in the tradition but they need to understand they do nothing for their salvation or sanctification.
· Also for the false teachers to impose them on the Colossian gentile believer was wrong.
The first bullet -- Christ is not better with rituals and rules.
Legalism occurs when one group or person insist that everyone must do certain things or they are not achieving sanctification as they should.
The false teachers wanted the Colossians to believe that they were incomplete in the Gospel of Jesus if they did not adhere to Jewish rules and rituals.
Have you meet people who are very ritualistic in the way they prepare for their day?
I have had fellow Christians tell me “you have to read scripture at a certain time of day or pray in certain manner, if not your just not placing God in the right place in your heart.”
It can also apply in our culture.
We can also observed people apply legalism to non-religious things like working-out routines, personal dress, make-up, the things they eat or drink
This works in the opposite as well.
That guy can’t be a Christian, he smokes.
I saw the woman drinking a glass of wine she is not faithful.
The person who says stuff like that is a gossip
But judging someone’s spirituality and faith on something is wrong
We are just adding things to Christ.
Culture also forces un-biblical requirements upon the Christian community and insists that they be accepted and absorb them into our faith and many people give into and freely accept these requirements in order to achieve approval or acceptance from the community or government.
For example
Abortion
Same-sex marriage
They cause big separations in our society both politically and religiously
When immoral and un-biblical things from the culture or government began to invade biblical truth as given by God the Christian must resist them in a moral way and in accordance with the law of the land.
Culture will force these things on the church and on you.
Your friends, co-workers and family will criticize you and judge you as prejudice, discriminatory or hateful.
The other thing that gets added to Christ.
Phil Jackson the most successful coach in NBA history claims to be a Christian Zen Buddhist.
I was sharing some heath concerns I was recently made aware of the other day and a friend of mine who believes in Christ said to me “you just need to learn to meditate to keep the stress out of you life.”
I assured him my meditation life was good not perfect but good and was always focused on the word of God, it is all I need.”
Don’t be persuaded by those who judge you on your faith and commitment to Christ when you don’t accept their rules or rituals in worship, food, life, death and sin against God.
‘We all stand before the Judgment seat of God.”
This brings us to our second bullet
v-18-19 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
B. Men are the subjects of Mysticism not Christ and Christ is the real and tangible object that deserves our worship.
· Mysticism can be defined as the pursuit of a deeper or higher personal religious experience.
· Or a spiritual reality that comes to someone outside his or her human intelligence and natural senses.
· It puts more weight on human feelings, intuition and internal thoughts above those that are observable
· It is subjective instead of objective
The false teachers were claiming they had a special mystical connection with God. They were “disqualifying the Colossians” based on their lack of this special connection.
Paul lists a few things here that deserve some explanation so that we are not left to our own imagination.
Here is the first of two uses of the word asceticism in this passage. It occurs again in v23 and we’ll get to that later.
In my translation the ESV it says “asceticism” some of your translations may say humility, self-abasement
The NKJV reads
“Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility”
These people were likely walking around portending to be humble because of a special relationship they pretended to have above and beyond the Gospel.
You can almost hear them as they walked around Colossae, “Well I don’t know why I have seen these special visions or why I have an angel that watches over me, I guess I am just special.”
“God has given me an angel to protect me.”
· The Second and more damming of these teachings is the worship of angels.
o This was a far more serious problem than the false humiliation.
o Scripture STRICTLY forbids this
o It was a HERESY that teaches that there is more than one mediator between man and God
o “1 Tim 2:5-6 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”
o Jesus told Satan who is a fallen angel when Satan tempted Jesus with all the kingdoms of the world, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.” Matt 4:10
o The angels worship God themselves they are worshipful just as we are.
o Jesus on the other had sits at the right hand of the Father.
· Lastly in addition to false humility, angel worship the false teachers clamed they had special visions.
o This was common then and it is now. When someone claims they have a special connection with God they often like to back it up by saying they had a vision that supports there claim.
o Scripture confirms that visions and special revelation outside the bible are not something that occurs.
Hebrews 1:1–3 (ESV)
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Special visions are not given to men or women. People cannot claim to be a prophet who hears from God. God has set all of this aside when He came a dwelled with us.
He has given us His word if you recall John 1:14 the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
We cannot be overwhelmed or taken captive by these claims of cults, or people. Christ is all-sufficient to make us complete and we must grow to spiritual maturity through the study of His word.
People today will try and convince you that if you can’t speak in some heavenly language or have not had some special spiritual awakening you don’t have the Holy Spirit or that your not faithful enough.
If you believe and have repented of you sins, meaning you have turned away from them. If you are convicted when you do sin and seek to ask forgiveness from God that is the Holy Spirit working in you.
We must holdfast to Him who is the head and through him we will be nourished and feed the proper food through His word and grow with the growth that comes from God.
C. This brings us to the last bullet to help you defend yourself from the judgment, persuasion of the world and to help you fight the sin of your flesh.
Asceticism or self-denial is godless self-worship.
20 - 23 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations—21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
· This is the second time this word Asceticism is used. It applies here to how we define the word today today:
· It is a strict self-denial in an attempt for people to prove they are closer to God than other or to attempt to gain some closer relationship with God.
o Don’t handle, taste or touch
§ The false teachers insisted on avoiding certain foods or touching certain things. This was again a reference back to the Old Testament rituals and rules.
§ In Acts chapter 11 The Lord spoke to Peter and told him to Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ 8 But peter said, ‘Not so, Lord! For nothing common or unclean has at any time entered my mouth.’ 9 But the voice answered him again from heaven, ‘What God has cleansed you must not call common.’
o
§ Christ made it clear in Mark as we said before and here he assured Peter that the old things of the ritual and rules about food and prohibition on things touched were not to be of concern to the believer of Christ Jesus.
o Severity to the body was an empty attempt to make you look more holy than someone else.
· Not eating certain food or denying yourself food or self abuse might seem like they would benefit someone in focusing on God rather than on themself but it produces a false humility.
· Putting on an appearance only to draw attention to yourself
· The Pharisees did this and Jesus called them out.
Jesus told the disciples in Matthew 6:16–18 (ESV)
16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
· Fasting is an appropriate way to honor God and commit to focusing on Him rather than some none important worldly thing. It doesn’t always involve food but it can be other things like TV, Cell Phone, Food for a period of time or something that is particularly pleasing to you. However it will not make you more Holy
· God might call some to live to a meager life of self-denial. Many of these are missionaries who by their situation in remote locations live this way but it will not gain them spirituality.
· No amount of self-denial, self-pity, self-punishment or restrictions of food can bring you closer to God and these will certainly not prevent you from sinning.
Fullness in our growth and strength come from Christ and the church.
Folly in the world and its judgment will not keep us from sin
Trusting in the culture will only send us deeper into sin and incompleteness.
You may have friends, fellow soldiers, shipmates, marines or airman who act morally around you every day.
They can adhere to all the rules, UCMJ and be good decent humans
But without faith in Jesus Christ all of their outward morality, false humility, claims to special knowledge and self-denial will only damn them to eternal suffering.
Our hope is that you know Jesus and have picked up your cross to follow Him, to know Him to grow in Him and to have faith, love and hope in the only One who can forgive sin and save you to a life eternally with Him in glory.
