Here’s you sign joke: Tire go flat?
The Emphasis begins to shift from Jesus’ power to Jesus’ person, His identity.
What do you believe about Jesus? What do you believe he will do in your life?
The Pharisees’ Callous Demand
The Pharisees’ Callous Demand
They wanted another sign from heaven because of their unbelief.
Unbelief is never satisfied with what God has revealed.
Jesus had given them several signs already. Jesus said that only one sign was left for them, the sign of his Resurrection.
Jesus said that only one sign was left for them, the sign of his Resurrection.
(ESV) - the paralytic man.
(ESV)
But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
Haitian young man you wanted a sign from God.
Look around you! Jesus was standing right in front of them and they were too blind to see.
The Disciples’ Confusion
The Disciples’ Confusion
They were quick to forget Jesus’ power and provision.
Preoccupation with physical needs will cause us to miss God’s purposes.
(ESV)
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
They were worried about bread, and you can imagine the conversation that took place among them.
I thought Philip was supposed to pick it up! Judas has the money, he should have bought some. Jesus is going to be upset with us.
We are slow to learn and quick to forget God’s goodness to us! But, His grace is greater sin, his mercy is deeper our failure and his compassion is stronger than our weak faith!
Jesus’ Word of Caution
Jesus’ Word of Caution
Beware of the insidious danger of hypocrisy.
The Pharisees sought to justify themselves through work, but they were hypocrites. The Herodians simply sought power and worldly pleasure.
The Herodians simply sought power and worldly pleasure.
Remember God’s faithfulness in the past!
When you are running low on supply look up and trust Christ!
Remember his great compassion. Do you understand how much he loves you?
(ESV) “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat.”
2 “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat.
“I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat.
2 “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat.
Remember his mighty provision on your behalf. Do you trust the Savior to provide?
(ESV)
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.
Here’s your sign! Christ loved you, died for you and promised to provide for your needs in this life and in eternity!
