It’s about time!

Now that brings us to today to the announcement, the first gospel meeting,

I. The Illustration
Where we ended was people were amazed others were mocking (12-13), now Peter is prepared to respond. (Act2:14-15)
14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. 15 “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;
Hey it is way too early to be drunk. Case point is in most Jewish households there was no drinking at all except with meals and not in excess, must less 9am (3rd hour) of the day - - -
It was the Holy Spirit that was working in thee people that made it amazing and others mocking.
But the significance cannot be overlooked here.
It was proclaimed by John the Baptist (Mt3:11-12)
11 “As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 “His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Speaks of the Christ, His baptism, His judgment. His baptism is with the Holy Spirit.
It was foretold by Jesus (Act1:4-5)
4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
It was told would be empowering by Jesus (Act1:8)
8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
And now explained and expounded by Peter (his first preaching assignment) (Act2:16)
16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:

which foretold of the outpouring of the Spirit (parallel to this is found in Joel2:28-32; here in Act2:17-18)
17 ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; 18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy.
A time of judgment and a time of salvation was upon them. (Act2:19-21)
19 ‘And I will grant wonders in the sky above And signs on the earth below, Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 ‘The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood, Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come.
21 ‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
That would come in just some 40 years at A.D. 70 so there was work to be done and God enlisted others to help carry the message to the whole world.
Like Paul mentions it (Tit3:5-7)
3 For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. 4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared,
5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
This washing and regeneration is what Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about

This washing leads to justification by faith
11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
This washing, this regeneration that lead to justification happened when we were baptized into one body, the church (Col1:18; 1Cor12:13)
18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.
13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
The passage from Joel, Peter tells us that this, the outpouring of the Spirit, is that which Joel prophesied, though some parts of this will take place (judgment) in 40 years.
So we have the illustration of the outpouring of the Spirit now that is Peter’s introduction after getting their attention to the message (the sermon itself)

All sermons need to have a message and a challenge, what are we to do with the message. Peter delivers the message and tells them exactly what to do.
First is the attestation of Jesus (Act2:22)
22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—
Jesus, through His miracles, wonders and signs, all of which people had seen them so they could not be denied.
He was put to death (Act2:23)
23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.

Not only put to death but as the fulfillment of what Isaiah said (Isa53:10-12)
10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.

Jesus death and by whose hands could not be denied either.
It was not an accident or a chance that this all happen, it was God’s predetermined plan!
This Jesus was put to death, was raised from the dead (Act2:24)
24 “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.
He was not stolen by the disciples to hide the body, He rose from the dead and Peter offers proof.
David’s prophesy (Act2:25-32)
25 “For David says of Him, ‘I saw the Lord always in my presence; For He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken. 26 ‘Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; Moreover my flesh also will live in hope;
27 Because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, Nor allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. 28 ‘You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.’ 29 “Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

Then the offer of the eyewitnesses (Act2:32)
32 “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.

21 “Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us— 22 beginning with the baptism of John until the day that He was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”
Bringing us to the current witnesses that saw the outpouring (Act2:33)
33 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.

Now they saw, they heard, they were compelled, but not yet convicted, but hold on that will be coming.
This Jesus who was attested, put to death, raised up, now is exalted as both Lord and Christ. (Act2:33)
33 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.
This exaltation was told by David and quoted by Peter (Act2:34-35)
34 “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, 35 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’
Which comes from Psm110:1
This One is now Lord and Christ (Act2:36)
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”

So now what? Now comes the response
The Response
The Response
We have the compelling message and now comes the conviction (Act2:37)
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”

We know faith comes by hearing (Rom10:17) - they heard the message
Now they were pierced to the heart, which means they believed the message
The message of Jesus Christ who rose from the dead is both Lord and Savior (Messiah)
The conviction brings them to the question, what must we do, or what shall we do.
Now I believe in what the scripture says in the context in which the scripture says it and many want take this next verse and say that is not what it says.
There is nothing we can do to earn, buy, purchase our salvation. It is a work, but it is a work of God not us, it is our obedience to God that we must do. I will give some examples.
Christ is our salvation to all who obey the Gospel (Rom1:5)
5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake,
Obedience of faith, not to faith (Rom6:17)
17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,
He is the author of our salvation (Heb5:9)
9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
Hard to stop there, but time starting to run short, Just a little more
22 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart,

Obedience is a command (1Pt1:22, 4:17)
17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

So now that brings us to Peter’s reply to their convicted question (Act2:38)
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
Peter telling them what Jesus told the Apostles to proclaim in (Lk24:46-47); what they were commanded to proclaim (Mt28:29) and the reason for it stated for forgiveness of sins also seen (add Act22:16)
16 ‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’
To those who believe, and you don’t call on someone, something you don’t believe in.
And that brings us the challenge (Act2:40)
40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!”

41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.
so the conclusion today is
BE ADDED TODAY!
You have heard the message
Have you obeyed the gospel?
What hinders you?
And if you have already obeyed, what hinders you from living out your baptism and sharing the message with others.
