Focus of last week was, how do I judge myself?

Nick brought up the importance of examining our own lives.

We looked at three key characteristics that define Christians

5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

False teachers had entered into the church, and the church was completely unaware of it.

How does this happen?

Example with Paul and the Corinthians church: False apostles

Application: Satan is not this ugly, scary character. He comes in a form that is beautiful and attractive.

For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Mormons are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They seem to be so loving and respectful. But their end is "according to their deeds." Satan's favorite place to be is in the pulpit and in the pews. Is Satan happy what is going on here at Saving grace? Spreading the gospel, teaching the word, etc...

So Jude is going to give them a few examples of how the Lord has judged the apostates of the past.

- In relation to Christianity, it would be a person who knew the truth, seemed to be walking with God, and then rejects God and walks away.

So Jude is going to give them a few examples of how the Lord has judged the apostates of the past.

1. The Apostasy of Israel (v5)

The apostasy of angels:

God delivered Israel from over 400 years of bondage in Egypt, miraculously parted the red sea and saved them from the Egyptians - Moses sends 12 spies into the land which would later be called Israel to search it out and bring back a report. See . All the people except caleb and Joshua boo hoo and want to go back to Egypt. Then jump down to , , (nobody from that generation would enter the land)

How were they apostates? They didn't even have the knowledge of God, did they? They had rejected God, given themselves over to immorality, and are (now presently) an example by suffering in eternal fire.

30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

Lived for their own desires. Israel wanted to go back to Egypt and enjoy the "goods" of it.

The Angels gave up their proper abode and committed fornication with nature. They sought to cohabit with human beings and lusted after evil.

Jude is going to relate these three groups to the false teachers that came into the church too.

In summary:

Cain was religious, he believed in God, he even brought a sacrifice to God. But it was on his own terms.

Balaam was under the assumption that God curses people when they mess up. = totally false idea of the gospel

Poetic way of saying that these guys are a waste of space!

- Corrupt fellowship, don't find sufficiency in God, given over to the next hip doctrine, don't produce good fruit, shameful, and are going to end up in hell.
