14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
Focus of last week was, how do I judge myself?

Nick brought up the importance of examining our own lives.
Nick brought up the importance of examining our own lives.
We looked at three key characteristics that define Christians
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
We looked at three key characteristics that define Christians
1. Bondservant
OT: if a slave loved his master and wanted to serve him, he could pierce his ear symbolizing his love and service to his master

2. Loved
All are loved by God Are we "beloved" by God. Are we those who God has set his love upon?

3. Saint

Have we been called by God?
Have we been called by God? - For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

- Transformed: When a person changes his outward appearance in such a way that doesn't match his inward character.
Application: Satan is not this ugly, scary character. He comes in a form that is beautiful and attractive.
For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
Mormons are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They seem to be so loving and respectful. But their end is "according to their deeds." Satan's favorite place to be is in the pulpit and in the pews. Is Satan happy what is going on here at Saving grace? Spreading the gospel, teaching the word, etc...

Go kind of quickly through section
So Jude is going to give them a few examples of how the Lord has judged the apostates of the past.
3. Reject the Person of Jesus Christ
Go kind of quickly through section
Apostate: a person who has turned away from a certain belief
- In relation to Christianity, it would be a person who knew the truth, seemed to be walking with God, and then rejects God and walks away.
So Jude is going to give them a few examples of how the Lord has judged the apostates of the past.

The apostasy of Israel:
Three main examples:
The apostasy of angels:
The apostasy of Sodom and Gomorrah:
The apostasy of Israel:
1. The Apostasy of Israel (v5)
The apostasy of angels:
God delivered Israel from over 400 years of bondage in Egypt, miraculously parted the red sea and saved them from the Egyptians - Moses sends 12 spies into the land which would later be called Israel to search it out and bring back a report. See . All the people except caleb and Joshua boo hoo and want to go back to Egypt. Then jump down to , , (nobody from that generation would enter the land)
The apostasy of Sodom and Gomorrah:
2. The Apostasy of Angels (v6)
1. The Apostasy of Israel (v5)
God delivered Israel from over 400 years of bondage in Egypt, miraculously parted the red sea and saved them from the Egyptians - Moses sends 12 spies into the land which would later be called Israel to search it out and bring back a report. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”
3. The Apostasy of Sodom and Gomorrah
How were they apostates? They didn't even have the knowledge of God, did they? They had rejected God, given themselves over to immorality, and are (now presently) an example by suffering in eternal fire.
30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”
Common thread:
11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
16) ‘It is because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’
Lived for their own desires. Israel wanted to go back to Egypt and enjoy the "goods" of it.
28 Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the Lord, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: 29 your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, 30 not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
The Angels gave up their proper abode and committed fornication with nature. They sought to cohabit with human beings and lusted after evil.
2. The Apostasy of Angels (v6)
Sodom and Gomorrah gave themselves completely to immorality.
Jude is going to relate these three groups to the false teachers that came into the church too.

11 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
1) Michael is commissioned to bury Moses
13  You were in Eden, the garden of God;
every precious stone was your covering,
2) Satan opposes his burial on two grounds: (a) he claims to be the lord of matter (hence the body should be handed over to him). To this claim Michael rejoins, "The Lord rebuke thee, for it was God's spirit which created the world and all mankind."
- Even though this story is not directly a part of the canon of scripture, we are to regard it as true since it is stated as a fact in the canon.

Cain:

Cain murdered abel because Abel's deeds were righteous and Cain's evil
Cain was religious, he believed in God, he even brought a sacrifice to God. But it was on his own terms.
On the day that you were created
they were prepared.
Balaam:
Saw wickedness in Israel and tried to rebuke him, but God would only allow him to bless them

I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God;
Balaam was under the assumption that God curses people when they mess up. = totally false idea of the gospel

in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
Poetic way of saying that these guys are a waste of space!
15  You were blameless in your ways

from the day you were created,
till unrighteousness was found in you.

Once again, not in Scripture, but no reason to doubt it
16  In the abundance of your trade
you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God,
and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17  Your heart was proud because of your beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you.
18  By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your trade
you profaned your sanctuaries;
so I brought fire out from your midst;
it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
in the sight of all who saw you.
19  All who know you among the peoples
are appalled at you;
you have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.”
Genesis 6:1–4 NASB95
Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
3. The Apostasy of Sodom and Gomorrah
How were they apostates? They didn't even have the knowledge of God, did they?
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
They had rejected God, given themselves over to immorality, and are (now presently) an example by suffering in eternal fire.

Cain:
For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous.
Cain murdered abel because Abel's deeds were righteous and Cain's evil

Revelation 19:11–16 NASB95
And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
1 Corinthians 6:3 NASB95
Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life?
Matthew 25:31–46 NASB95
“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. “All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. ‘For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? ‘And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? ‘When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ “The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’ “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ “Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ “Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ “These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
