The Disciples
Recap the word, light, witness, baptism.
John 1:35-
This is God’s word lets pray.
Intro Story?
Text Break down
John had many disciples and many followers.
Followers would have been in the thousands.
But John gladly points them all to Jesus.
Who were these two first disciples?
We are told here Andrew, and most believe the other is John the author of this gospel.
John 1:
John points them to Jesus.
Again uses the term Lamb of God, From the beginning it should have been clear what Jesus ministry was all about.
He was here as the messiah and savior but as the lamb who would be slain.
John 1:
Who are these guys following me?
What do they want?
Stalkers.
Their response?
kinda creepy, were do you live?
A sincere understanding of who Jesus is should cause you to desire to be with him stay with him.
euJ
John 1:39
Jesus invites them, come and see.
He invites everyone today they same, come and see.
You want to follow me?
Know me? have a relationship with me?
Come and see.
There is some steps that need to be taken for you to follow Jesus.
He is not going to make you do it.
You have to get up and follow him.
Today so often people want to tell Jesus were he should go, they want to invite jesus along for their journey and hope he will bless it.
Jesus is not the follower, he is the leader and if you are going to follow him and see what he is all about and what he can do, you have to drop your agenda and ask him, where are you staying?
where are you going?
Andrew goes and gets his brother, and if John indeed is the other disciple we also know then that he gets his brother James too.
Gathering people to Jesus often starts with those you are closest to.
Note they are not gathering people to church, or to a club but the savior to the messiah.
John 1:
Andrews brother is Simon.
Jesus here from the beginning recognizes and appoints Simon to a special role.
We see this in his name change.
Simon to Peter.
Simon means in greek snub nose and in Hebrew listen.
Jesus changes his name to Cephas in Aramaic and Peter in the greek both of which mean the Rock.
There was also another of the 12 we know whose name was also Simon.
This Simon is renamed Peter because it represents his founding role in the Church.
After Christs accession to heaven it is Peter who leads the early church.
john 1:43-45
Jesus calls Phillip, we dont really know much detail about this, but Jesus in his knowledge called this man Phillip.
Who then is all stoked about it and goes and calls his brother Nathanael.
John 1:
He tells him we have found the messiah!
And he is from Nazareth.
Nazareth?
Whats some dude from the middle east 2000 years ago got to do with me?
Come and See!
John 1:47-
Jesus gives him this amazing compliment.
A man of complete integrity.
Jesus is not just trying to flatter Nathanial, We know from other places in scripture that Jesus can see peoples hearts and knows their thoughts.
So this man Nathanial must have been a very solid guy upstanding guy.
Nathanial asks how do you know me?
Jesus says I saw you under the fig tree.
I know what you were doing before you even got here.
Fig trees were where jewish men would often go to meditate on scripture and pray.
Nathanial is blown away by this sign.
And proclaims you are indeed the son of God.
This is a reference of
Which I believe was what Nathanial was reading when he was under the fig tree!
And that is the first reason why Jesus mentions it.
Jacob the son of Isaac the grandson of Abraham is given by God a dream,
This is a prophecy that had also been given to Abraham and to Issac and it was two part, it was about the literal descendants of Abraham Issac and Jacob who are the Israelites,
it is also about the children of faith, the church, the followers of disciples of Christ.
As it says in
Reach the word, reach the nations, reach austin.
Reach 1,000 initiative
Reaching people, bringing them in to also experience all that we do.
So on the theme of a stairway here is my stairway of disciplship that I see in this text.
