Walking in the Psalms
Walking in the Psalms
The Lord has been walking me through some of the Psalms lately and I am renewed when when I go back and reflect on the treasure that is found within those pages.
Tonight lets walk a few minutes in one I was reading thru the other morning, .
is a Psalm for thanksgiving for the Lord’s protection and care for those who trust in Him.
So let me ask you this question...
Have you given thanks to the Lord for his protection, not just daily, but did you call out and thank Him when you knew at a particular moment if He has not been there you might have been seriously hurt?
I have done that and i know many more have as well.
The Lord is good and faithful to those who love Him and trust Him
I. So lets look at a few passages,I don't want to read the whole Psalm, you can do that later but lets look at a few important verses in this Psalm
Look at the first 4 verses:
1 I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
____________________________________________________
David begins by blessing the Lord and then invites other ( the poor the humble) who have shared in the goodness of the Lord to come and join in the chorus of praise.
The word Bless is an important word to par attention too, The idea to bless is to speak a good word about the Lord, about his mercy and kindness, about his faithfulness and help.
David is inviting people to join Him in speaking those words.
Now stop there for a minute, if you blessed the Lord today with your words, what would you say?
Now stop there for a minute, if you blessed the Lord today with your words, what would you say?
ME: He is faithful and Loving, he takes good care of His Children. I love the Lord for all those reasons. And yet so many more
David says that he will bless the Lord, praise Him at all times, his mouth will be continually full of praise for the Lord. vv 1-2
The Lord is wonderful and we cannot do anything but praise his Holy Name.
Of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.
1 I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant,
and their faces shall never be ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him, and delivers them.
8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
9 Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
for those who fear him have no lack!
10 The young lions suffer want and hunger;
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
11 Come, O children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 What man is there who desires life
and loves many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Turn away from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
and his ears toward their cry.
16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
20 He keeps all his bones;
not one of them is broken.
21 Affliction will slay the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;
none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
II. Now there is a second natural section to this psalm.. David blesses and praises the Lord because He has answered my prayers.
Look at verse 4
4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant,
and their faces shall never be ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him, and delivers them.
4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
Of David.
1 Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me!
2 Take hold of shield and buckler
and rise for my help!
3 Draw the spear and javelin
against my pursuers!
Say to my soul,
“I am your salvation!”
4 Let them be put to shame and dishonor
who seek after my life!
Let them be turned back and disappointed
who devise evil against me!
5 Let them be like chaff before the wind,
with the angel of the Lord driving them away!
6 Let their way be dark and slippery,
with the angel of the Lord pursuing them!
7 For without cause they hid their net for me;
without cause they dug a pit for my life.
8 Let destruction come upon him when he does not know it!
And let the net that he hid ensnare him;
let him fall into it—to his destruction!
9 Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord,
exulting in his salvation.
10 All my bones shall say,
“O Lord, who is like you,
delivering the poor
from him who is too strong for him,
the poor and needy from him who robs him?”
11 Malicious witnesses rise up;
they ask me of things that I do not know.
12 They repay me evil for good;
my soul is bereft.
13 But I, when they were sick—
I wore sackcloth;
I afflicted myself with fasting;
I prayed with head bowed on my chest.
14 I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother;
as one who laments his mother,
I bowed down in mourning.
15 But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered;
they gathered together against me;
wretches whom I did not know
tore at me without ceasing;
16 like profane mockers at a feast,
they gnash at me with their teeth.
17 How long, O Lord, will you look on?
Rescue me from their destruction,
my precious life from the lions!
18 I will thank you in the great congregation;
in the mighty throng I will praise you.
19 Let not those rejoice over me
who are wrongfully my foes,
and let not those wink the eye
who hate me without cause.
20 For they do not speak peace,
but against those who are quiet in the land
they devise words of deceit.
21 They open wide their mouths against me;
they say, “Aha, Aha!
Our eyes have seen it!”
22 You have seen, O Lord; be not silent!
O Lord, be not far from me!
23 Awake and rouse yourself for my vindication,
for my cause, my God and my Lord!
24 Vindicate me, O Lord, my God,
according to your righteousness,
and let them not rejoice over me!
25 Let them not say in their hearts,
“Aha, our heart’s desire!”
Let them not say, “We have swallowed him up.”
26 Let them be put to shame and disappointed altogether
who rejoice at my calamity!
Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor
who magnify themselves against me!
27 Let those who delight in my righteousness
shout for joy and be glad
and say evermore,
“Great is the Lord,
who delights in the welfare of his servant!”
28 Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness
and of your praise all the day long.
______________
Do you see what David has said here, He sought the Lord and the Lord heard His prayer.
David is praising the Lord for the simple truth that he prayed, he asked, he looked to the Lord for help, wisdom, strength and the Lord answered ....
This is an example of a great truth, God listens, hears and answers the prayers of His children.
Do you remember a time when the Lord answered a particular prayer you prayed?
The answer I believe would be yes, and honestly the first prayer he answered for you was when you called upon the name of the Lord and He responded and saved you.
But we can reach out and name so many more, i can. I bet you can as well.
Look at verses 6-7
6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him, and delivers them.
The poor man cried and the Lord heard him… why is it important do you think that David included this message?
The King cried out and was answered, the poor man did as well. God is not respecter of persons, he loves all, helps all his children no matter their political, social or economic standing, God is in the matter of blessings all His children.
Verse 7 is speaking of answered prayer, the Lord has sent His own angel to be of assistance to that person in need. To encamp is to be with, in fact to reside all around and protect them
Question. Have you ever been in a situation when you knew the Lord was walking right with you, all over you to protect you...
So where does this lead us.... third thought
III. Moves us forward to fear the Lord, more literally to revere Him.
Look with me at verses 8-9
8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
9 Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
for those who fear him have no lack!
What does David mean when He says taste the Lord and see that he is good? Taste means to experience for yourself… David knew he has lived it.
David says now its your turn to see
What if everyone just trusted us enough to try the Lord, to call out and see for themselves instead of saying no, not now or no I have seen Christians who are bothersome...
Now verse 9 is wonderful.... those who fear him have no lack.....
what does that mean..... The Lord takes care of his children, he takes care of thier needs, not wants.
Do you think
Q.. Do you think ppl struggle with the idea of needs vs wants in today’s world?
Why do they struggle with it?
Fear the Lord, reverence Him and hold fast to him… He is able to keep that which we have commited to him against that day.
Now let me move forward again… and this is really the last thought of my study here.
IV. Strive for Righteousness.
We can be thankful we can strive for righteousness in this life… it takes effort but the Lord will bless it.
Why is it important, .... Well, the Lord commands it.
Lets look at verses 13-15, 19
13 Keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Turn away from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
and his ears toward their cry.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
1 How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I take counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
6 I will sing to the Lord,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.
To the choirmaster. Of David.
1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds;
there is none who does good.
2 The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man,
to see if there are any who understand,
who seek after God.
3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
there is none who does good,
not even one.
4 Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers
who eat up my people as they eat bread
and do not call upon the Lord?
5 There they are in great terror,
for God is with the generation of the righteous.
6 You would shame the plans of the poor,
but the Lord is his refuge.
7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,
let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.
A Psalm of David.
1 O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?
2 He who walks blamelessly and does what is right
and speaks truth in his heart;
3 who does not slander with his tongue
and does no evil to his neighbor,
nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
4 in whose eyes a vile person is despised,
but who honors those who fear the Lord;
who swears to his own hurt and does not change;
5 who does not put out his money at interest
and does not take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things shall never be moved.

Listen to those words of David… verse 14 Turn away from evil
Listen to those words of David...
Why would David tell us that? To keep us from harm and yes even judgment.
,
It is to fall into Satan trap, a little evil wont hurt anyone he says, so we watch something, listen, touch… and soon we are hooked.
But staying at a safe distance we are ok..... we are safe.. Because we have avoided the problem.
Verse 19… is specially wondrful
Our lives are filled with problems, but the Lord is faithful...
Do you believe that? yes,
Can you praise him for than… Yes.
