John 4:20–26 CSB
20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.” 21 Jesus told her, “Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews. 23 But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” 26 Jesus told her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.”

John 4:15–26 ESV
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
I. The place of Worship v.20-22
II. The Change of Worship v23-24
III. The announcemnt of the mesiah v. 25-26
John 4:20 CSB
20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”
Joh
. The woman in this verse speeks not just for herself but for all sameritin people. The mountin refers to mount Gerizim which was in view as she spoke to Jesus. and which the sameritin temple had been built. to rivel the Jersulem temple as a place of worship (even to this day a small comunity of sameritins worship God on this mountin. )The Jews insisted that only in Jeruslem should people worship God.
God. This belief went back to the promise that God would choose a place to put his name, and there people should come to worship him; and this place was Jerusalem, Mount Zion . The question the woman asked implies “what do you think about this disagreement”
Our Fathers=ansestors of the sameritins as far back as the building of the temple on Mount Gerizim in the time of Nehemiah
The idea she is portraying is that they moth say that the only trie place of woship is… it is a divine obligation and there is no other sutible place.
Worship is attributing worth and honor to the living God
John 4:21 CSB
21 Jesus told her, “Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
Woman was a polite form of address.
Jesus did not imiditly answer he first forshadowed a new day he said “believe me woman a time is comming when you will worship the father neither on this mountin nor in Jeruslem. The question as to what the correct place to worship would soon be irelevent because times were about to change and worship would no longer be in a certin place. This should be a warning to us about thinking of particular places as sacred, such as the church building
Instead of taking up the debate about ligitmate holy places Jesus poited to a future time of salvation When Worship will not be limited to a local sacred site, neither Mount Gerizim or Jeruslem How one worships is more importent than where one worships.
John 4:22 CSB
22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.
Salvation is from the Jews=Jesus is lickly alluding to the Jews preservation of the entire OT Scriptures that revealed God’s Plan for salvation. Also, the Messiah would be from the Jews, a son of david not a samaritin or Gentile
John 4:23 CSB
23 But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him.
Worship “in Spirit and in truth” means that worship is no longer tied to sacred sites. and Worship through the holy spirit whoom Jesus would give to those who believed in Him The father seeks people who will worship in the spirit and in accourdence with Christs teachings
John 4:24 CSB
24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.”
but the hour is comming and is now here -This means that the new idea of worship was in some form being set up while he was talking to her.
John 4:25 CSB
25 The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
She responded to Christ saying that she knew the messiah was comming and when he came he would clear everyhing up. All this was too dificult for her to understand
The Woman uses the Jewish name jor Jesues (Messiah) which was known in sameria The Sameritins also expected the messiah basing there hope on several scriptures found in the first 5 books ; They looked for Him to restore the Kingdom of Israel and to re-establish the worship on Gerizim where they supposed the tabernacle was hidden. They called the Mesiah HusHab which ment converter The sameritin Idea of the Messiah was les political than that of the Jews The sameritins believed He would fulfil which said that a prophet like Moses would come
John 4:26 CSB
26 Jesus told her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.”
While Jesus reconized that the people of semeria were not right in many areas he revealed himself as the messiah to the woman He reconized that through Him the longings of the semariten people would be satisfied and they would only be able to offer true worship by putting trust in Him, the Jewish Messiah.
Jesus never reveald himself like this to his own people the Jews He wanted to prove to them instead of tell them He was Christ. It would not be safe to directly tell them but it was safe to tell her.
I am he meaning I am
Jesus rarely confirms that He is the messiah most lickly because of the view among the Jews that with the messiah would come political diliverence. However with the fact that the samritin concept was linked to restoration of proper worship of God he reaveled himself in one of the “I am sayings in Johnm.
