WHAT IS NOUTHETIC COUNSELLING

1 NOUTHETIC COUNSELING IS BIBLICAL COUNSELING.

What we have done thus far is a brief description of nouthetic counselling.
This morning, we will go into the Biblical reference that support the principles and practices o Nouthetic Counselling.
The goal is to give you the solid foundation of Scripture to stand on in your counselling ministry.
LESSON OBJECTIVE: To give the student the biblical foundation for doing Nouthetic Counselling.
The word Nouthetic, as a title, is important because it defines us!
In this word was suppose to mean “biblical counseling”.
It is unfortunate that the word Biblical is very corrupted today.
So, the term “nouthetic,” is a better definition for Biblical counselling or counselling that comes out of the Bible.
The word Nouthetics is so unique that it does not carry with it the unnecessary baggage of corruption surrounding the word Biblical.
Many purport to be “biblical” counselors are not really Biblical because
they do not have a high view of Scripture
nor are do they believe Scripture is sufficient.
There is a difference between those who are doing truly “Christian” counseling and counselors, who are secular or eclectic in practice, who are Christians.
Nouthetic is Biblical counselling because it is “counseling from the Scriptures”
But how do they use the Scriptures?
Are the Scriptures the authority in the counseling room?
This aspect will be the test of whether they are Biblical.
Cited the example of Christians who do not believe that Scriptures speaks to depression.
In counselling, the principles and the practice are important.
Biblical counselling as a system/principles and method/practice are embedded in the original Greek words nouthesia and noutheteo.
Nouthetic Counselling is Biblical because of these 2 Greek words.
Lets take a look at these 2 words.
One example is .
Romans 15:14 KJV 1900
And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
rorom15.14
Our English word nouthetic is found in “admonish one another.”
Paul was the only NT author to use this word.
There are three elements in the word nouthesia which are not brought out in the English word counseling.
Word study is not limited to root mean.
Usage must also be taken into account.
Noutheteo and Nouthesia: “Put in mind” and “training by word”.
And when nouthesia and noutheteo is used in the NT and all by Paul it has the idea of verbal confrontation out of concern to bring about change.
Lets look at the example of the word in .
1 Corinthians 4:14 KJV 1900
I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
Note:
“warn” is better translated as counsel.
Paul calls the Corinthians “my beloved sons”.
Not to shame them but to counsel them to change their ways.
In other words, there are 3Cs in Nouthetic Counselling.
Verbal confrontation (a personal appeal to the individual).
Out of concern for the counselee .
1 Corinthians 4:14 KJV 1900
I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
“warn” is better translated as counsel.
Paul calls the Corinthians “my beloved sons”.
In order to bring about change that God desires.
Key Passages in which the Pauline term are used;
, , , , , , , , , ,
Colossians 1:28 KJV 1900
Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
Acts 20:29–32 KJV 1900
For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Colossians 3:16 KJV 1900
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Explained how Dr. Adams came out with the word Nouthetic
acts20
Why not another Biblical word; Parakaleo?
We are looking to the Scripture for a model, system on how Christians should do counselling.
Parakaleo means ?????? but it is not used because;
It is too large or general a term.
It means to “help” generally, in any number of ways (does not necessary refers to counselling).

That is why we Jay E. Adams calls it a process or method
It can even mean the attorney/client relationship.
Helping does not mean counselling.
Parakaleo (comfort) is part of Nouthetic Counselling BUT Noutheteo is not part of parakaleo.
Parakaleo does not sufficiently represent the Biblical teaching of helping someone overcome their sins and the sins of others against them.
You will soon see that sin plays a very big part of Nouthetic Counselling.
That is why we Jay E. Adams calls it a process or method

2 NOUTHETIC COUNSELING IS A BIBLICAL PROCESS.

Consider the process of change in .
2 Timothy 3:15–17 KJV 1900
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
2 Timothy 3:10–17 KJV 1900
But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
This appears in Paul’s last letter, when handing the torch to Timothy
Telling him how to stay true to God under great pressure
Cf.
2 Timothy 3:1–14 KJV 1900
This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was. But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
Scripture is “breathed out” by God
The spoken word often had more weight than the written.
These are the very words of God, as though He had said them audibly.
The Scriptures are “useful” for change in four ways.
Teaching
Is about giving the standard or benchmark.
Conviction
More than “rebuke”.
LECTURE 3 WHAT IS “ NOUTHETIC” COUNSELING?
A Legal term meaning to so prosecute the case against another that he is found to be guilty of the crime of which he was accused.
Not “conviction” in the modern sense of feeling guilty.
Correction
To “stand up straight again”.
Scripture knocks you down, but then picks you up, dusts you off, and gives you a shove in the right direction.
Disciplined training in righteousness
Must develop new underlying biblical patterns to replace old sinful ones.
This is necessary to avoid a “kiss and makeup” syndrome with God.
Structure and time are involved in this.
The order here is important and shows how GOD changes us.

3 NOUTHETIC COUNSELLING IS A PRACTICE YOU SHOULD ADOPT

It is a two-factored process
Ephesians 4:22 KJV 1900
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
You were taught regarding your previous habit patterns to put off the old person that you were, who is corrupted by deceitful desires, being rejuvenated in the attitude of your mind, and to put on the new person that you are, who is created in God’s likeness with righteousness and holiness that come from the truth.
Note how this conforms to
2 Timothy 3:16–17 KJV 1900
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
It is not enough to merely put things off, old habits must be replaced.
With the Scriptures, then, God’s man has all he needs
stresses sufficiency
Completely fits
Fully equips
For every good task
They are “sacred” Scriptures
Something peculiarly related to God
Not hagios—set apart, separated (usually translated “holy”)
But hieros—“something that is peculiarly related to God”
Thus nouthetic counseling is a system of “sacred” counseling

WHAT A NOUTHETIC COUNSELLORS DO.

LESSON OBJECTIVE: To show the conflicts in the counselling ministry so that the student can appreciate how the Nouthetic Counsellor is effective because of the Biblical system (principles) and method (practices).
There are some facts about Psychology and Psychiatry that we must acknowledge.
We will also see that there is much confusion in the world of counselling and this ie because what was rightly the domain of the pastor and Christians has been invaded by professionals who do not believe in GOD.

1 What is right about psychology and psychiatry?

LESSON OBJECTIVES: To show the conflicts in the counselling ministry so that the student can appreciate how the nouthetic counsellor is effective because of the Biblical system and method.
Good scientific studies/data.
A psychiatrist can dispense medicine/drugs.

2 What’s wrong with Psychology and Psychiatry?

What’s wrong with Psychology and Psychiatry?

No agreement amongst themselves regarding their theories.
Bad conclusion - its another theology.
Its anti GOD - Freud removing guilt.

The drugs does affects the body and mind but if does not solve the soul problem.
The drugs does affects the body and mind but if does not solve the soul problem.
The conclusion of Dr. Jay E. Adams was they should stay in their field and not invade into the domain of the pastors/Christians.
Lets us read from Isaiah.
Isaiah 40:13–14 KJV 1900
Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, Or being his counseller hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, And taught him in the path of judgment, And taught him knowledge, And shewed to him the way of understanding?
Isaiah 40:
Isaiah 41:28 KJV 1900
For I beheld, and there was no man; Even among them, and there was no counseller, That, when I asked of them, could answer a word.
Isaiah 41:
These 2 passages of Scripture reminds us that GOD, who created man does not need a counsellor.
He has all the answers and especially about man and how to help man.
It is to the creator that the creature goes to for the answer.
Not the other way round.
NOT ANOTHER MAN.

3 Aspects of doing counselling.

No on knows another person’s heart. , , , .

1 Kings 8:39 KJV 1900

But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
Acts 1:24 KJV 1900
And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)
We make a grave error when we seek to look into another person’s heart.
