I. Guard yourself against causing others to sin, 17:1-3a.

II. Grant forgiveness whenever it is asked for, 17:3b-4.

A. Two relational commitments for disciples:

1) Disciples are to share in each other’s commitment to pursue righteousness.

Galatians 6:1 NASB95
Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
1 Thessalonians 5:14–15 NASB95
We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.
2 Thessalonians 3:14–15 NASB95
If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be put to shame. Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
Titus 3:10 NASB95
Reject a factious man after a first and second warning,
Titus 3

2) Disciples are not to pursue their spirituality in isolation from one another.

Leviticus 19:17 NASB95
‘You shall not hate your fellow countryman in your heart; you may surely reprove your neighbor, but shall not incur sin because of him.

B. So how do we keep from turning into spiritual ...

1) What we are dealing with known actions, so we confront when sin is directed at us, done before us, or when we have a formal responsibility to confront.

2) We are to rebuke when sin is present; we are to quickly forgive when repentance is present.

III. Grow your faith by exercising the faith you have, 17:5-6.

IV. Give humble and faithful service to the Master, 17:7-10.

1) The disciple is God’s humble servant, laboring faithfully and dutifully in all areas.

1 Corinthians 4:1–4 NASB95
Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy. But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord.
1 Corinthians 4:1–3 NASB95
Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy. But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself.
1 Cor 4:1-4

2) The disciple is the recipient of God’s thanks for faithful service.

1 Corinthians 4:4–5 NASB95
For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord. Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.
1 Corinthians 4:5 NASB95
Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.
