Phoebe

Romans 16:1–2 ESV
I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae, that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well.

What do we know about Phoebe?

We know that Paul sent her along with this letter to the church in Rome (I commend to you)

We know that Letters of Commendation were often hand delivered by the one being commended.
We can assume she was the letter bearer for the epistle to the Romans.
Letter bearers acted as envoys on behalf of the letter’s author.

We know she is a follower of Christ

our sister is very telling.

We can probably assume she was gentile.

Phoebe is the name of one of the Greek gods

We can probably assume she was wealthy

She was a servant of a specific church (a deacon)

She was heading to Rome to address some issue (probably a lawsuit)

We can probably assume she was a citizen of Rome

She was a Patron of many, and of Paul
