Illustration of going to LSU and Duke game. Dad and I set out front looking for tickets for the future event. Shaquille Oneal was playing then. Duke had won the championship that year or the year before. We got to sit behind the goal. It was a memory I won’t forget. The sureness of the future game did not keep me from acting wisely in the present purchasing of tickets
Suppose I was out trying to get tickets and someone came up and offered tickets at a reduced price of $1. In my excitement I would buy them. However I never looked at the date. I soon started to find a few other people who found the same deal. We started to make fun of those paying a lot more money to get their tickets. Our deceived action could carry only until the real event happened and only those with real tickets got into the game.
This passage speaks of the dawning of the event of a righteous rule. Its future surety is meant to influence present choices. The complete light of this reign is not due to the fact that it does not exist; it is not fully over all the earth. Today’s living matters in the light of the future permanent rule. Those involved in this righteous rule are at rest and peace now and fully in the future. They face the taunting of the full day not yet being here, but they experience the quiet rest because of their submission to the reigning king.
We will see another rest in this passage tonight, but in light of God’s true reign it referred to as complacency. This is a negative restful condition because it is not founded on something that is true.
