Intro:
· Possibly a psalm David wrote shortly before he became king or as he was becoming king
· It is full of wisdom that we can apply today in our lives
I. 1-2
a. Sings songs of praise to God
i. Because of his steadfast love
1. Steadfast – unwavering, reliable, constant
ii. Justice
1. He is righteous and the only source of justice
iii. Wants to follow the same principals in his kingdom
b. He will ponder the way that is blameless
i. The way of the Lord –
ii. – the blessed man delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it constantly
c. He even walks with integrity in his house
i. At all times he maintains his integrity
ii. It wouldn’t be just a public show but his normal walk of life
II. 3-4
a. He will not set his eyes on things that are worthless [NKJV – wicked]
i. He is watching what is going into his mind
ii. Not letting the things of this life creep in
iii. What about us today?
1. Are we watching what we watch or read?
iv. Are we allowing worthless/wicked things to enter our lives, because we are giving it attention through those things.
b. He hates those things – he doesn’t want them in his life
i. We should hate those things as well
ii. What isn’t bringing us closer to God is taking us away from him
c. He doesn’t even want to know anything that is evil
i. A little leven, leavens the whole lump
ii. Bad company corrupts good morals
iii. By allowing sin constant access into our lives just through these things we can sear out conscience –
III. 5-7
a. The secret slander will be destroyed
i. David wants to purge the things that aren’t condusive to his kingdom
ii. How bad do we want to purge those things from within the church?
1. Do we take part in the secret gossips or do we stop them when they get to our ears?
iii. God knows what is done in secret and will punish it
1. ;
iv. It doesn’t matter if anyone else knows it or not
b. He will judge the looks and hearts
i. He will bring down the prideful arrogant
c. He would only surround himself with others whose way was blameless
i. Are we as careful as David wrote in the psalm about who we surround ourselves with?
ii. We need to make sure we’re making a conscious effort to be around other Christians so we don’t get drug into the cares and passions of this life
IV. 8
a. It would be a daily practice to rid the land of evil
i. Is it our daily practice to rid ourselves of these evil things that tend to find there way into our lives?
Conclusion:
· Be careful with the things that you allow into your life
· Be careful with the things you allow to take you time and attention
· I want to challenge us this week to pay attention to:
o The things we watch
o The things we read
o The things we listen to
o The people we choose to surround ourselves with
is it drawing me closer to Christ or leading off the narrow path?
