LOVE!

1 Cor 13:4

1 Corinthians 13 CSB

1 If I speak human or angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give away all my possessions, and if I give over my body in order to boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, is not boastful, is not arrogant, 5 is not rude, is not self-seeking, is not irritable, and does not keep a record of wrongs. 6 Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. Have you ever shown someone you love unkindness?

Have you ever shown someone you love impatience or unkindness?

Have you ever been envious, boastful, arrogant, rude, self-seeking, or irritable in a relationship with someone you love?

Have you ever kept a record of wrongs with someone you love?

Have you ever been boastful in a relationship with someone you love?

Have you ever been arrogant in a relationship with someone you love?

Have you ever found joy in unrighteousness with the people you love?

Do you bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, and endure all things with the people you love?

Have you ever been rude in a relationship with someone you love?

Let’s take a look at what Jesus told His followers about love.

John 15:9–17 CSB

9 “As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 “I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. 12 “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. 17 “This is what I command you: Love one another.

John 15:9-

(9) - Remain in my love.

But how do we do that?

(10) - keep His commands

What commands?

(12) - Love one another

How?

(13) - By laying our lives down for our friends

This is exactly the kind of love we’re supposed to show to our spouses!

Ephesians 5:22–26 CSB

22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord, 23 because the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of the body. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives are to submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her with the washing of water by the word.

Have you ever been self-seeking in a relationship with someone you love?

1 John 4:7–21 CSB

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his one and only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 10 Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God. If we love one another, God remains in us and his love is made complete in us. 13 This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and we testify that the Father has sent his Son as the world’s Savior. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God—God remains in him and he in God. 16 And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. 17 In this, love is made complete with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because as he is, so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. So the one who fears is not complete in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and yet hates his brother or sister, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his brother or sister whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And we have this command from him: The one who loves God must also love his brother and sister.

This passage also tells us to remain in His love.

Have you ever been irritable in a relationship with someone you love?

When we confess that JESUS is the SON OF GOD (vs 15) and believe that HE died in our place to pay for our sins (vs. 10, 16), HE sends us HIS SPIRIT (vs 13) which empowers us to love one another (vs 10-12).

Loving one another is a reflection and a sign that HE has saved us!

1 John 4:12

Do you guys know what other day besides Valentine’s Day it is?

If we don’t love others we don’t know GOD.

This is how HE loves us.

Lent

If GOD can love us enough to to take our place and pay for our sins against HIM, we should be able to love others enough to forgive them.

Lindsey and I don’t normally celebrate Lent, I don’t think I ever have before but this year we’re going to.
