Eldership

Acts 20:28 ESV
Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
Hebrews 13:17 NLT
Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.
and
Will you put Christ above all in your own personal heart and the church.
Will you seek God’s word on all matters of belief and look to it for wisdom and guidance in all circumstances?
Will you seek to be Spirit led in all actions and decisions regarding your own life and the life of our church?
Will you put the church's needs before your own needs?
Will you pray for the church and the individuals in the church as often and as much as you can?
Will you lead and serve humbly?
Pray over them.
The Wedding
John 2:1–12 NIV
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
This is God’s word lets pray.
Intro to text.
2-12 are about Jesus public ministry
This is the first of Seven miracles Jesus preforms in the gospel of John.
John calls them signs rather than miracles and though Jesus preformed many more in the synoptic Gospels Mat, Ma, Luke. John only records seven as signs revealing specific attributes about Christ.
John records seven miracles or as he calls them signs.
John records seven miracles or as he calls them signs.
Though they are miracles, signs is more fitting because John wrote everything with a specific purpose which was to get the reader to make a decision about the Identity of Christ.
So this is a miracle of water to wine but more importantly John is telling us that this was a sign telling us something about Christ identity.
The Question
The first and most immediate question people ask about this text is… Is it ok to drink?
Now let me make something clear, that is not the point of the text. The point of this text is far more significant than a alcohol debate.
But, it is a good opportunity to at least touch on the subject. Which I will do briefly before we move on to the monumentous symbolism of this first of seven Signs John gives us.
Positive use of Alcohol
John records seven miracles or as he calls them signs.
God gave wine to make men glad ()
Though they are miracles, signs is more fitting because John wrote everything with a specific purpose which was to get the reader to make a descion about the Identity of Christ.
(Christophany) Melchizedek “brought forth bread and wine” ()
So this is a miracle of water to wine but more importantly John is telling us that this was a sign telling us something about Christ identity.
Jesus does the same in the new testament and that is in communion.
A blessing of wine for God’s people. (; ; ; , ; ; ). Cf. also ; ; .
The lack of wine is viewed as a judgment from God (; ; ; ; )
Daniel speaks of drinking wine as a blessing after a time of fasting.
Basically every major Character in the bible drank Alcohol including Jesus.
The lack of wine is viewed as a judgment from God (; ; ; ; )
implies that it is a good thing to drink wine and strong drink to the Lord: “And you may spend the money for whatever your heart desires, for oxen, or sheep, or wine, or strong drink, or whatever your heart desires; and there you shall eat in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice, you and your household”
Steven must really love alcohol or drinking.
No I really love proper usage and understanding of the Bible.
That being said we have to talk about the other side of alcohol, which the bible is also very clear about.
Negative use of Alcohol
Getting Drunk condemned in the Old Testament
( ; , ; ; 28:7; 29:9; 56:12; ; ;
Getting Drunk is condemned in the New Testament
; , ;
Condemned to the point of being an analogy of Gods wrath.

5:11 Beware, those who get up early to drink beer, those who keep drinking long after dark until they are intoxicated with wine.
22 Beware, those who are champions at drinking, who display great courage when mixing strong drinks.
Liquor
The high alcoholic drinks called hard liquor today (40 percent to 50 percent alcohol, or 80 to 100 proof) did not exist in Bible times. They are produced by distilling grain-based mash or material from other sources. They did not come into widespread use until the Middle Ages. The danger of these high alcoholic drinks is that, unless one dilutes them, they easily lend themselves to abuse, drunkenness and alcoholism.
Words for wine and what they mean
Old Testament
yayin. This word is used over 130 times in the Hebrew Bible to mean fermented wine, not grape juice.
shekar — which is used 22 times in the Old Testament, and refers to alcoholic drinks made from dates and other fruit, possibly even wheat.
tirosh, meaning “new wine,” is used in 38 places in the Old Testament. People sometimes conclude that this word means grape juice, or fresh-pressed juice of the vine. However, states: “Old wine [yayin] and new wine [tirosh] take away their understanding.” Grape juice could not have this effect. Tirosh is an intoxicating wine if used in excess.

New Testament
Oinos 32 times, bible indicates that it is intoxicating.
gleukos
Dilution Theory
1/3 wine mixed with water.
Day drinking. Workers, Those worried about conamitated water.
No evidence of Diluting wine until the time of the greeks.
During Jesus time majority of wine was diluted. However that does not make it not intoxicating. Bible repeatedly says you can get drunk from it.
Text Breakdown
John 2:1–2 NIV
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
Third day is often debated.
Third day since the last noted day.
John 2:
Some say it is the third day of the week.
Doesn't really matter.
Mother Mary was there at this wedding.
It seems that she is there and has some sort of role.
So this is a relative or at least a friend that both Mary and Jesus seem to know. I can not find anything on who this is but that doesn't really matter.
Jesus and his disciples are invited. This is not all 12 yet, most likely 6 or 7 of them at this point.
John 2:3 NIV
When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
John 2:
Lawsuit for running out of wine, grooms paid for everything.
Lawsuit for running out of wine, grooms paid for everything.
Jesus was resourceful
Joseph died and Jesus was a carpenter not a carpenters son.
John 2:4–5 NIV
“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
John 2:4
My hour has not yet come?
John 2:
The term in Greek Gynai for Women here could be best understood in english as Mam. It wasn’t Mom, or a term of affection, it was more of how we would use the word Mam.
Jesus asks Why me?
Im not running this party, I am not the groom or the father of the groom.
Whenever Jesus says hour not yet come, he is referencing his death on the cross.
So why is he responding this way? A little dramatic, Can you do something about the wine? Its not my time to Die!
Jesus has begun his ministry and now everything we see Jesus do and say has specific and intentional symbolism.
Mary is thinking practically, Jesus is thinking symbolically and of prophecy.
Je, Ho, Am all had prophesied that the time of the messiah there would be an abundance of wine.
John 2:6–8 NIV
Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so,
These are not the best servants.
These are the that pick up your burger patty off the floor and still put it on the bun.
We think of wine being red, what if it turned to white wine?
John 2:9–10 NIV
and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
John 2:8–10 NIV
Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
John 2:8
John 2:8–12 NIV
Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. John 2:8-12
John 2:11 NIV
What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
John 2:
The disipcles see this and are blown away by his glory.
Jesus is truly all powerful
Jesus fulfills all prophecy
Three things this sign/miracle shows us.
Jesus fullfills a prophecy
Jesus symbolically shows us he is the groom who will provide.
Jesus symbolically shows us that it is not our works but his transformation that is needed.
He fills it to the brim there is nothing left to do
Jesus reveals his glory
I think that for the believer these are simular bodies of evidence for our faith.
Experience of the believer.
We look at the prophecy, history, archeology etc.
We see that he provides for us
We so that he transforms us by his grace
He does the work needed, we can rest in him.
We see his glory
