13 He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. 14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
15 And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Who are the righteous? More specifically, who are the righteous, Jesus is talking about here?

Who are the sinners? Technically, ALL of us are sinners. Therefore, we ALL are in need of healing.

The Pharisees are the ones not distributing “mercy” and are honestly, “the sick” ones. They are blind sinners and in even more need of help from Jesus.
In tonight’s passage we see that Jesus puts a label on two kinds of people. We also see that there is an authoritative figure who gets it wrong on labeling people.

Jesus.
(You need to explain the tax collectors.) A tax collector was someone who, was employed by the Roman government who solely took over by force. They didn’t ask, and then imposed a heavy taxation system requiring all to pay or it would cost them their life. Well, due to heavy taxation it was hard to live and survive…due to these conditions, Romans were smart, and would hire a local to enforce the tax through bribery, therefore, the tax collectors themselves would, in turn, become corrupt. So not only was the taxation system enforced under Rome very difficult, but in order to make a little more money, tax collectors, would impose their own tax rate as well. Rome never cared about the extra rate as long as they got their own percentage of the profit. The depravity in this is revealed by the fact that Jesus is hanging with openly corrupt people. He’s not only hanging, but we see Him call one to follow Him here.
One group of people tried to make a judgment call and obviously got it wrong. ()
Secondly, ironically, they also were sick. (, )
Thirdly, Jesus doesn’t specifically categorize us, but reemphasizes the mission, which is, redemption. (, )
Fourthly, “the sick,” aren’t making judgment calls, except that they know they are sick and in need of help. ()
He’s the only one with this authority to call, redeem, and heal.
Are you stuck asking the question, which one am I? Or, do you recognize our great need found in this man, named Jesus. He hangs with anybody and everybody.

Disciples - corrupted by their lack of obedience to the LORD at some point.
You.... can’t tell me you’ve never broken obedience to God at any point in our life.
Who’s really in need of Jesus here? That’s right. ALL OF US.
