1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Introduction
Introduction
Growing up my father wasn’t very reliable. My parents divorced when I was about six years old and my Dad would pick us up every other weekend. At least that’s what was supposed to happen. Often times my mother would console myself and my brother as we stared out the window watching for his truck to pull in the driveway. As I look back over my life many moments that should have been great moments are overshadowed by an irresponsible and unreliable father disappointing me. To this day my father and I do not have a very healthy relationship. The track record he built up over the years of my growing up hasn’t changed much since I’ve been and adult. If I truly needed my Dad I couldn’t say that I know for sure that he would be there. My past experiences give me no hope when it comes to my Dad.
As we read the Bible and see God’s plan of redemption unfold from Genesis to Revelation we see the track record that God lays down between Him and His people. We see where God, even after he has been rebelled against in the garden, makes clothes for Adam and Eve out of compassion. We see that God chooses to save Noah and his family out of a completely wicked world. As we read on we are introduced to Abraham. A pagan man that worshipped the moon, but God called him and promised him that his offspring would inherit the promised land. Later on after the 70 descendants of Abraham have increased to over 1 million and are enslaved in Egypt God sends Moses to save His people out of bondage. God’s track record of redeeming His people is consistent and without fail. The ultimate climax of redemption is the incarnation of His son, Jesus Christ, in whom we have eternal redemption and eternal life. When God draws a person to Him through the gospel of Jesus Christ their life begins to change. The Holy Spirit begins to dwell in them revealing their sin to them and granting them repentance. Combining God’s redemptive acts in the past with our faithful response in the present gives us the confidence to hope in God’s promises of the future.Look with me as we unpack a rich passage of scripture regarding our hope in Christ.
If you have your Bible turn with me to Romans chapter five. We will be looking at verses 1-5.

Verse 1
Verse 1
Verse 1
Peace is one of the effects of having been justified
God’s redemptive act of the past.
“Declared righteous”
“Declared righteous” in the sight of God
God demands righteousness
Past tense
Only Christ is righteous
We obtain righteousness “through” his life, death and resurrection
Peace with God makes us a friend of God
We were once enemies
Under the curse of sin
Rebels against God
Deserving only God’s Wrath
Now we are friends
Under the blessing of promise
Adopted sons reconciled to God
Worthy to fellowship with Him
Verse 2
Verse 2
We stand in grace by our faith in Christ
Peace with God is a present and everlasting gift of grace.
We stand confident before the throne of God.
Covenant relation in Adam or in Christ.
17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
We either stand in the living water of Jesus Christ or lie dead in the desert of Adam.
Verse 3
Verse 3
In this confident stance God’s glory is our ultimate hope
We long for God’s glory to come and His holiness be vindicated
28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
Verses 3 and 4
Verses 3 and 4
A formula for steadfast hope
We are purified through our past sufferings
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Hope for Abraham in his offspring
1 peter 1:
We are held by our present endurance (perseverance) through suffering
Hope for Noah in deliverance from the flood
And we are confident in our proven character based on the proven track record of God
Hope for Israel through Moses
We will all stand before a holy God on the day of judgement. If anyone stands before Him believing that they will be saved by anything other that God’s grace alone through Faith alone in Jesus Christ alone you will be standing before God utterly and hopelessly alone.
Hope for all of God’s people in Christ
Our suffering

Once we are declared to be righteous by God through faith in Christ we move from being enemies of God to being God’s friend. We are at peace with Him. To be at peace with God means that we are no longer under the threat of His wrath, no longer under sin’s curse and no longer unworthy to have fellowship with Him. But not everyone has peace with God. There are some in this room no doubt that have no peace with God and stand guilty in the sight of a Holy God. Instead of friends they are enemies. Instead of blessed they are cursed. Instead of fellowship with God they will know only His perfectly just and holy wrath poured out on them for eternity.
Peace with God is only possible “through” our Lord Jesus Christ. There is nothing in us that gives God a reason to save us, but there is everything in Christ. We are declared righteous through Christ living a perfectly righteous life in our place. A life that we are not capable of living. Through the death of Christ on the cross our sins were atoned for. It was this sacrifice that reconciled us to God. Through the atonement we were made “at one” with God. Through Christ’s resurrection we have the promise of eternal life. None of these
