The Fear of the Lord
Don’t draw near without da Fear.
Isaiah 29:13 NKJV
13 Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,
Notice this, the people draw near with their mouths and honor me with words but have removed their hearts from God.
Therefore the Lord said “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,
Notice this, the people draw near with their mouths and honor me with words but have removed their hearts from God.
Surely this is an Old Testament problem that does not concern the church at all now right?
No!!! Paul warns Timothy about these same kinds of people in
2 Timothy 3:5 NASB95
holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.
2 timothy 3:5 when he says of the people,
having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
Who will you know these kinds of people?
Paul says they will be, starting at verse 1 to verse 4
For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
Now the sad thing here is that paul is not talking about the sinners out in the word.
He is referring to those in the church. They act like, talk like, dress like, smell like, Christian.
They give lip service, they worship, but their hearts are far from the lord.
How does this happen?
Let look at the rest of
Isaiah 29:13 NKJV
13 Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,
And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,
The problem is that we are not teaching the fear of the Lord.
We are teaching a watered down gospel because we are afraid of offending people.
“We fear men so much because we fear God so little.” William Gurnall
William Gurnall.
We are concealing the truth with is the glory of men instead of revealing and uncovering it.
How many time ever in your life have you heard a real sermon. Not just a quote but a entire message about the fear of the lord.
I can count on one hand. With 2 fingers.
We are commanded in the word of God
Philippians 2:12–13 NASB95
12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
Isaiah 66:5 NASB95
Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at His word: “Your brothers who hate you, who exclude you for My name’s sake, Have said, ‘Let the Lord be glorified, that we may see your joy.’ But they will be put to shame.
Hear the word of the Lord,
Hear the word of the Lord,
You who tremble at His word:
When we read the word or God command when we are in His presence. It should move us.
Last we I said that God’s manifestation demands a response.
Salvation demands a response
His word demands response.
He demands a response
What about fear brotha derrick God didn’t give us the spirit of Fear.
I would say obviously that right. Because many of us have no fear of God and that why we do the things that we do.
Lets look at the rest of
Isaiah 66:5 NASB95
5 Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at His word: “Your brothers who hate you, who exclude you for My name’s sake, Have said, ‘Let the Lord be glorified, that we may see your joy.’ But they will be put to shame.
“Your brethren who hated you,
Who cast you out for My name’s sake, said,
‘Let the Lord be glorified,
That we may see your joy.’
But they shall be ashamed.”
Notice the connection with the Glory of God and the Fear of Him.
The Glory of God is found in His presence and His manifestation.
That why last week Moses says if you not going to go with us don’t bring us out.
We fear not having you.
That’s why David says whom shall I fear? Whom shall I be afraid?
I fear separation and disconnection. I fear distance
John Beaver says
“before discussing the fear of the Lord, we must capture a glimpse of the greatness and glory of the God we serve.
Psalm 89:6 NASB95
For who in the skies is comparable to the Lord? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the Lord,
For who in the heavens can be compared to the Lord?
Psalm 89:7 NASB95
A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, And awesome above all those who are around Him?
Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the Lord?
God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints,
And to be held in reverence by all those around Him.
John than ask the question,
For how can we duly respect and honor Him if we remain unaware of His greatness, or why He deserve it?
In The Chronicles of Narnia, an allegory by C.S. Lewis, the author has two girls, Susan and Lucy, getting ready to meet Aslan the lion, who represents Christ. Two talking animals, Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, prepare the children for the encounter. "Ooh," said Susan, "I though he was a man. Is he quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion." "That you will, dearie." said Mrs. Beaver. "And make no mistake, if there's anyone who can appear before Aslan without their knee's knocking, they're either braver than most or else just silly."
"Then isn't he safe?" said Lucy. "Safe?" said Mr. Beaver. "Don't you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? Of course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the king, I tell you!"
Notice psalms he is great to be feared and held in reverence.
So what is the fear of the Lord?
Hebrews 10:26–27 NASB95
26 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.
For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.
And understanding that if we continue in sin GOD WILL SEND US TO HELL!!!!!!
Believe dat!!!!
Hebrews 12:28–29 NASB95
28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; 29 for our God is a consuming fire.
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.
For our God is a consuming fire.
The Fear of the Lord is knowledge of His that brings reverence
Now the bible says in
James 4:8 NASB95
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded
As we draw near to Him we see a Holy glorious God and we look at our self and see our need for him.
I need to clean my hand, repent of my sin, purify my heart and stop being double minded.
This is what happen every time I draw near every time I see him.
Look at
Leviticus 10:3 NKJV
And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.’ ” So Aaron held his peace.
And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying:
‘By those who come near Me
I must be regarded as holy;
And before all the people
I must be glorified.’”
Those who come near must reverence me, regard me as holy and glorify me.
The problem with the folks in was they could draw near with no fear.
We are not born with the fear of the lord.
We where born in sin, independent, and rebellious.
In iniquity and lawlessness.
But God desire now is to write His law upon our heart,
Jeremiah 31:33 NASB95
“But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
They we would tremble at His word. That it would move us. That we wouldn’t sit in his serves and not be moved.
I close with
Proverbs 1:7 NASB95
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
When we find this fear. When we desire it.
Proverbs 2:5 NASB95
Then you will discern the fear of the Lord And discover the knowledge of God.
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.
We will pick it up from there next week.
