I Am The Bread of Life
INTRO INTO THE I AM’S
INTRO INTO THE I AM’S
While last week we looked at Father God telling us ‘I AM’, I also pointed out how all of the Word hinges on Christ, and it’s all about Jesus. So, in the New Testament, Jesus also makes these ‘I AM’ claims. Being that HE is God, and the claims are all tied together, we thought that we would spend the coming weeks going through the ‘I AM’s’ of Christ found in the book of John. This week we will start with ‘I AM the bread of life’.1. I am the bread of life - , , (He feeds us/is our sustenance/our truth)

On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone—however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks—when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”
Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe.
3. I am the door of the sheep - (He makes a way where there is no way)

This week we will start with ‘I AM the bread of life’.
Here’s my question: why did Jesus pick these things? There are many different illustrations He could’ve used. I am the tree of life, eat from me and never die. I am the river of life, in whom flows living water. I am the strong tower, in whom you find refuge. So why did He choose these illustrations? While we can’t know that exactly, what we can do is dig in to each one and examine the implications of each, and at least get close as to why He chose them.
Bread.
- God tells Adam that his face will be full of sweat when he eats His bread. (hypothesis about raw food)
- Melchizedek, priest of God Most High, brings out bread and wine.
Many times in the Bible when they talk about food they just say bread. Bread is the most widely used word to represent food in the bible. KJV - 360 times; 280 in O.T., 80 in N.T. The word food is used 55 times in the whole Bible.
Exodus - They were to eat bread with no leaven for 7 days. It is commonly said that this was so that their bread could be made quicker, since they were leaving Egypt. But, if you read, they ate unleavened bread for 7 days before Passover. They could’ve eaten leavened bread at least part of the time.....
Maybe, He wanted to prepare them for being in the wilderness and not being able to take the time to let the bread rise, and even preparing them for the manna, which was going to be basically an unleavened bread.
Then, we see bread in the Temple. The Israelites were instructed to bring sacrifices of bread. The grain offering looks like from reading it that it was the ingredients to make unleavened bread, regardless of whether or not it was actually baked bread. Sometimes it refers to the Priests keeping the leftover bread, yet sometimes it refers to sprinkling the grain offering on the fire. The grain offering was a sacrifice of their toil, an offering from the fruit of the sweat of their brow.
Then there was the Showbread, which was referred to as a cake of bread. It was baked every week, set on the table of Shewbread, set in 2 stacks of 6, and used throughout the week by the Priests.
“Showbread” also was called “bread of the presence” because it was to be always in the Lord’s presence. The table and the bread were a picture of God’s willingness to fellowship and communion (literally speaking, sharing something in common) with man. It was like an invitation to share a meal, an extension of friendship. Eating together often is an act of fellowship. God was willing for man to enter into His presence to fellowship with Him, and this invitation was always open. www.the-tabernacle-place.com

Jesus is tempted to turn the stone into bread in the wilderness. Jesus multiplies the fish and the loaves. Jesus breaks bread for communion and says this is my Body, take and eat; for unless you eat of my flesh and drink my blood you will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
The New Testament uses of ‘bread’ are split up among these: referring to the Feast of Unleavened Bread, talking about food, talking about communion, and then Jesus saying that He is the Bread of Life, which we will look at today.
I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE - So the Bread that we’re talking about today, the bread that Jesus is talking about, is not an earthly bread. It is a deeper kind of bread. It is food for the soul.
That is true of all humanity. The thing that makes human beings different from the animals is that having a full belly and a comfortable place to rest does not satisfy us........Ray Stedman

V. 26. Didn’t see signs, but ate of the loaves? Wasn’t that a sign? They didn’t see it… They didn't see the sign in that all they saw was the sign. The purpose of the sign was for them to see Christ as God. But instead, they only saw the sign. They saw His hand and not His face.
He had done signs, and they still didn’t believe. Which is why earlier on he rebuked them for asking after a sign. They had just seen one! No matter what He would’ve done, they wouldn’t have believed. .

So, We’re gonna go back and look at this story that they reference, about God giving their ancestors manna in the desert; because, we all have a little Israel in us. W all have a tendency to respond the same way they did, when Jesus was right in front of them, offering them the way of life.

-I am the door of the sheep - (He makes a way where there is no way)
And they journeyed from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they departed from the land of Egypt. Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. And the children of Israel said to them, “Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”
Then Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, “At evening you shall know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt. And in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord; for He hears your complaints against the Lord. But what are we, that you complain against us?” Also Moses said, “This shall be seen when the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to the full; for the Lord hears your complaints which you make against Him. And what are we? Your complaints are not against us but against the Lord.”
Then Moses spoke to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel, ‘Come near before the Lord, for He has heard your complaints.’ ” Now it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’ ”
So it was that quails came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp. And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground. So when the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.
And Moses said to them, “This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Let every man gather it according to each one’s need, one omer for each person, according to the number of persons; let every man take for those who are in his tent.’ ”
Then the children of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less. So when they measured it by omers, he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack. Every man had gathered according to each one’s need. And Moses said, “Let no one leave any of it till morning.” Notwithstanding they did not heed Moses. But some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. So they gathered it every morning, every man according to his need. And when the sun became hot, it melted.
And so it was, on the sixth day, that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.’ ” So they laid it up till morning, as Moses commanded; and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it. Then Moses said, “Eat that today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none.”
Now it happened that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found none. And the Lord said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? See! For the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore He gives you on the sixth day bread for two days. Let every man remain in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.” So the people rested on the seventh day.
And the house of Israel called its name Manna. And it was like white coriander seed, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.
Then Moses said, “This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Fill an omer with it, to be kept for your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’ ” And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a pot and put an omer of manna in it, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations.” As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept. And the children of Israel ate manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. Now an omer is one-tenth of an ephah.

So, we could’ve stopped after the first couple paragraphs. I kept going to show you the folly in them holding onto this legacy. This legacy was not a testament to their forefathers, it was a testament to God’s grace and mercy!! So, having said that, why do you think they were holding on to it? Why do you think that when Christ says that they needed to believe in Him, their response was that they are holding on to their history, their past, their legacy? It is because they had not allowed God to renew their minds.
People, we are stiff-necked! God stands before you and says ‘I am here! I have and I am all that you need!!’ And we just don’t want to budge because it’s not what we know. It’s not what we’re used to. It’s not what we like. God is present! And He is presenting Himself to you in Christ! And He is saying I AM the Bread of life! Come to me for all that you need!! Don’t hold on to your old ways. Don’t hold on to your old thoughts and ideas. Behold, I have come to make you Kainos!

Lessons from the manna

The reason for the manna - They only wanted it bc of their unbelief and hard hearts. That sounds bad, but we ask for things from God for a lot less reasons than that. But it’s not just that they wanted bread, they wished they were back in Egypt… (Peyton comparing to being at his mom’s, when y’all get out and things are hard)
-I am the way, the truth, and the life - (He is all that we need)
The consistency of the manna - They could not gather more than they needed for that day. Why was this? God is wise and perfect. Wouldn’t He give them a more efficient process than that? It was about the process of building relationship, not the bread. But they were just worried about seeking His hand, and not His face.
Gather double for the Sabbath. Get more bread the night before so that you can rest in the Lord on the Sabbath. We are to eat each day, but also not just be reading it, but digesting it. Ask the Lord to let it become part of who you are. You won’t always have bread with you, but when you are bread, when it is transforming you, then you will have it when you need it.

Surely, the Israelites saw some of these illustrations. Typically, I don’t assume that. I think that they didn’t understand the things that we understand now, which is true. However, they were a spiritual people. And surely, they saw some spiritual implications from these encounters with the Lord.
The Jews in Jesus’ day were looking back, and laying claim to the spiritual principles and encounters of their ancestors.
Here’s my question: why did Jesus pick these things? There are many different illustrations He could’ve used. I am the tree of life, eat from me and never die. I am the river of life, in whom flows living water. I am the strong tower, in whom you find refuge.
BRING IT TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
He is the Bread, but He is a better bread. How is He better? The manna was just a picture, a shadow.
So why did He choose these illustrations? While we can’t know that exactly, what we can do is dig in to each one and examine the implications of each, and at least get close as to why He chose them.

The reason for the Bread - The Israelites asked for the bread because of their discontentment, unbelief, and hard hearts. Unfortunately, many people are seeking Him not because they want to serve Him, but bc they want their bellies filled. And even once they come to Him, many that are saved simply pray for things they want or need. Imagine if the only time I talked to my wife was when I wanted something… So why are you talking to the Lord? Are you looking to fill your earthly belly, or your spiritual belly? He is present to fill your deepest longings. In your loneliness, He is a friend.
In your discontentment, He is your satisfaction.
In your frustrations, He is your peace.
In your fears, He is your encouragement.
In your stresses and labors, He is your rest.
Stop chasing and holding onto the other options that you have always known to deal with all of these deficiencies. And look to Jesus.

The consistency of the manna - It does require us coming to Him every day. That is the picture that was painted in the wilderness. It isn’t about only finding Him, it’s about walking with Him. Always and constantly pursuing Him.
But the flip-side of that is . Now let me clarify, it doesn’t mean that you’ll never hunger for Him again, it means that you will never need to go looking for spiritual bread again. We have to consistently draw from that well, but we know that the well will never run dry.

Jesus is the Unleavened bread in that He is without sin, and lights shines away the darkness. As you allow Him to shine into your heart, sin and filthiness runs and hides. I wish I could say it leaves, but at least it runs and hides!!

Jesus’ Body is the Bread that we eat. That may sound crazy.... Let’s look at a few verses.
Then, we have the New Testament.
1 cor 11:2
For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

Jesus is the Unleavened bread in that He is without sin, and lights shines away the darkness. As you allow Him to shine into your heart, sin and filthiness runs and hides. I wish I could say it leaves, but at least it runs and hides!!
Shewbread - God had them make Unleavened Bread
“Showbread” also was called “bread of the presence” because it was to be always in the Lord’s presence. The table and the bread were a picture of God’s willingness to fellowship and communion (literally speaking, sharing something in common) with man. It was like an invitation to share a meal, an extension of friendship. Eating together often is an act of fellowship. Jesus is the Showbread in that He wants to dine with us! He wants to be at the family meals with us, as a picture of the Feast that’s coming one day, the Wedding Feast of the Lamb! He wants to be present in our fellowship with one another, and He wants to walk in fellowship with us.
Jesus’ Body is the Bread that we eat. That may sound crazy.... Let’s look at a few verses.
NKJV
For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
When we say that we eat the Bread of His flesh, that His Body is the Bread of Life, we are finding our reason, our purpose, and our rest, in who He is and in all that He has done. We are receiving Him as our Bread of Life.
