What they should be doing:
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
And:
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
Put off, put away these things, earnestly desire the milk of the Word of God, and
To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
Enter into the presence of Jesus Christ- come to Him!
Why?
1. Chosen of God and precious
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
2. God saved you and made you a part of the body of Christ, the church, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices pleasing to God. And all of it is only possible through Jesus Christ.
3. You will not be ashamed
Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
Why question is continued
Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
The honor is for you who believe.
But to the ones who do not believe and who disobey the word they stumble. Instead of Jesus being to them head corner stone, He is the rock of offense and a stone of stumbling.
Again I think the question Peter is answering here is: why should you endure persecution and remain faithful to Christ?
Here he answers this question by means of a great contrast!
And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
Contrast!
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Theological side: Covenant vs. dispensationalism
The description that Peter gives to the church sounds very much like the description that God gives to Israel in the OT.
5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
6 For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
Deut
21 This people have I formed for myself;
They shall shew forth my praise.
12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed,
When there was no strange god among you:
Therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God.
17 And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts,
In that day when I make up my jewels;
And I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
Covenant theologian conclusion= the church has replaced Israel, or the church is now Israel. The two are the same.
Dispensationalism= The church and Israel are not the same. They are different and separate.
How do you explain ?
10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
The church is a “people of God” and Isreal is a “people of God” Two different groups two different peoples of God. And there is a lot of overlap between the two people of God. What is true of one is sometime true of the other.
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Chosen Generation- Chosen race (Christian race, sons and daughters of God, adopted into His family by means of Christ’s blood)
Royal priesthood- You are all priests before God (This was not true of all Israel), Not just priests, but priests to the King- Royal priests. You are also related to the King. You have been adopted into God’s family. Co-heirs with Christ.
Holy nation- Holy nation (people group) not a physical nation, part of a spiritual people. The church does not have physical lands or a physical kingdom. The church is not a physical nation. It is a spiritual people.
Fits context
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
I Pet
Peculiar people- does mean you are a bunch of wierdos. You are a people for His own possession. God saved you and added you into the body of Christ because He wanted you for His own possession.
What a position we have in Christ!
Notice our great purpose!
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
That ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light!
Why would you ever think about throwing in the towel? Why would you think about quitting the faith? Why would you consider giving into persecution and trials and tests?
Realize who you are!!!
You are chosen by God, you are a royal line of priests before God, you are a holy people, you are the very possession of God. And God did all of this so you could bring Him glory! To proclaim His excellencies! To tell how He called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. To tell v.10 about his mercy.
10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
And after all that you want to follow the ones who view Christ as a rock of offense and a stone of stumbling?
Faith Baptist church what are you going to do if in 5 years the world starts putting you in jail for refusing to condone homosexuality? Suing you? Insulting you?
God has called you out of darkness to proclaim his excellencies, not to go back to the darkness.
