All In

Philippians 2:5-11 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

It is amazing to me that Easter is just 5 weeks away, April 1, 2018. It is so early this year. I am always excited about Christmas, but the observance of the resurrection of our Lord, is the most wonderful celebration of all. The resurrection is the ultimate Christian Holiday. It separates Christianity from all other religions.

Today begins a new sermon series, “Destination: Golgotha” that will take us through the final weeks of Jesus Christ’s ministry on this earth. Today’s message is simply titled, “All In.”

“All In” reminds me of a song we have sung at invitation time,

I read a story one time about determining the level of commitment. The illustration was given:

Question: In a bacon and egg breakfast, what's the difference between the chicken and the pig?

Answer: The chicken is involved, but the pig is COMMITTED!

Most of the world today has at least a limited understanding who Jesus Christ is. Some religions have included Him in their list of prophets. Some even acknowledge that He is a god.

Many notable people have commented on Jesus’ place as the most famous, important, and significant person in history:

Introduction

From the time of the giving of the Law, the Old Testament describes three main offices in Israel: (1) priest, (2) prophet, and (3) king. Their offices were different, however each one served God. It is common knowledge that the priest served for God, the prophet spoke for God; the king ruled for God. When a person was chosen for one of these offices, he was anointed with oil (e.g. Moses anointed Aaron as high priest – Exodus 29:7; Jehu anointed Elisha as a prophet– 1 Kings 19:16; Samuel anointed David as king - 1 Samuel 16:13).

The New Testament presents Jesus, the Nazarene (Matthew 2:23), as the Christ. Christ and Messiah have the same meaning, “the Anointed.” Today we will see that Jesus was “anointed” in each of these offices. He was “All In.”

Jesus once claimed that He was the fulfillment of

Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

Luke 4:16-21 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Unlike the priests, prophets and kings of the Jews, Jesus was not anointed with oil of dedication within the Temple Mount, instead He was anointed with the Holy Spirit.

His Mission

His mission was to

Luke 19:10 – For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost Matthew 9:13 … ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” John 17:1-4 - When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Jesus accomplished the work that God gave Him to do: Jesus came to earth to be our Prophet, Priest and King.

Jesus: The Prophet

God chose the OT prophets to proclaim His word to His people. Their job was difficult, for when God raised up a prophet, it was normally to pronounce judgement on man.

The first main function of a prophet was to be a spokesman for God.

The last prophet of the OT was John the Baptist. His message was dire and specific, “Matthew 3:2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

After hearing about the death of John the Baptist, Jesus took up the message,

“From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17)

Jesus fulfilled His role as a prophet.

John 7:16, “So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.”

John 8:28, So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.

John 17:8, For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.

The second main function of a prophet was the foretelling or prediction of future events, through divine revelation.

Jesus predicted His death, burial and resurrection in the Olivet Discourse, recorded as fulfilled in all four Gospel accounts (Matthew 27—28; Mark 15—16; Luke 22—24; and John 18—20).

Jesus predicted the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). Therefore, Jesus clearly fulfilled the role of a prophet.

A third main function of some prophets were the sign gifts, such as healing and miracles.

Moses, Elijah, Elisha in the OT performed many miracles, (Exodus 14:21–22; 1 Kings 18:36–38; 2 Kings 6:6.

The Apostles performed many miracles.

All four Gospel accounts record Jesus performing many miracles and healings (e.g., Matthew 8:14–15; Mark 1:40–45; Luke 8:42–48; and John 6:16–21).

The title of “prophet” for Jesus is found many times in the Gospels when other people refer to Jesus (Matthew 21:11; Luke 7:16; John 4:19).

Jesus also alluded to Himself as a prophet in Mark 6:4.

Jesus fulfills all the requirements for a prophet in title, word, and deed.

Jesus: The Priest

As prophet, Jesus brings God to us; as priest, He brings us to God.

1 Timothy 2:5-6 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”

Jesus performed the office of Priest.

The task of priests assigned to either the Tabernacle or the Temple was to offer sacrifices on behalf of the congregation.

Jesus was both the sacrifice and the priest who offered the sacrifice.

Hebrews 2:17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Hebrews 9:28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Unlike the priest’s offerings, Jesus’ sacrifice was not a continual offering. He made it once.

Hebrews 7:27-28 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. 28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

This was a completed and final sacrifice, never to be repeated, a theme frequently emphasized in the book of Hebrews (7:27; 9:12, 24-28; 10:1-2, 10, 12, 14; 13:12).

Jesus: The King

Christ was Prophesied to be a King

Isaiah 9:6-7 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.

Before the birth of Jesus, it was prophesied that He would be a king:

Luke 1:31-33 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Matthew 2:6 And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

From His Birth, Jesus was King of the Jews

Matthew 2:1-2 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

Jesus: The Rejected King

At Jesus’ trials, the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?

Matthew 27:11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.”

Matthew 27:28-31 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.

Jesus DIED as a king.

Roman soldiers proclaimed Jesus as King of the Jews

Matthew 27:28-30 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. (Matthew 27:28-30).

Pilate proclaimed Jesus as King of the Jews

Matthew 27:37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”

Jesus ROSE as a king.

Ephesians 1:20-21 … that he[God] worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

Jesus will RETURN as a king.

Revelation 19:16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

Jesus: The Culmination of God’s Desire

As prophet, Jesus Confronts us.

As priest, Jesus Comforts us.

As king, Jesus Commands us.
